Not only do I learn how to ride a bike, Wyatt and I also are biking to the entirely different country of Belgium so I, Reyka, can try Belgian fries for the first time! Not being able to ride a bike if you are not a Dutchie is NOT an embarassment. You picked it up fairly quickly I see. It is just a matter of finding your balance and getting a bit of confidence. fun fact, belgium had 2 sides, Vlaanderen and Walonie. Its split down the middle to be honest. The Vlaanderen side has Dutch as an official languege and Walonie French.
im impressed with how fast Reyka went from never riding a bike to just casually riding. Most people fall off at least a few times. my respect!

Fun video, it feels weird for dutch people that someone can't ride a bike (or swim) but it happens more than you think for new people into our country and gets people into trouble. These are 2 skills you need to get under control quickly esp. for kids. You got it under control way quicker than most and its fun to see how much you are moving the steering bar to correct yourself since its not become something that your brain does on the fly in the background that will only happen after a few days. Keep riding its the way of the future ...

If you give cycling lessons, it is better if you ride behind the student +/- 2 m and 0.5 m to the left so that you shield the student and also see what the student is doing.

Really good that you learned to ride the bike that well in one day. And yes, the Belgians are renowned for their Frites (fries), but the frites in the Dutch part of Limburg are good as well.
I'm from the area, living 15 miles east of Maastricht, the river by the way is not a river, it is the Albert canal named to the Belgian king Albert and built around 100 years ago.
The river Maas or Meuse in French goes trough the middle of Maastricht but forms the border between Netherlands and Belgium outside the city.

I've been riding bicycles for 45 years, had to mostly give it up (going from being able to ride 20-25km non-stop easily to getting serious pain in my knees after a few hundred meters) because of joint problems and lost a lot of inherent stability which makes it awkward at times. You're doing great for a first timer.
Sorry to hear about your injury. After riding bikes for so long, I bet that was hard to give up. ❤️
Thank you very much for the encouragement. I hope to continue practicing and get better and do longer bike trips in the future. We are even considering trying to cross Europe on a bike all of next summer haha. From dust to glory, I suppose 😂

Top marks for the cycling. Nice one. Re Belgium, it's a North/South split with the languages. Dutch in the North and French in the South. You'd have had to go a fair way South to have heard some French!

That wasn't that bad an assumption to make. Belgium having two languages threw you a curveball. I kinda knew that both were spoken, but didn't really pay attention to what was spoken where 'til I went there for work. If you're still in the area, go back over for a beer. Belgian beer is out of this world.

Legit the ease you learned to bike is very impressive not even most dutchies learn it that fast very proud of you. And can i Just mention that you learned biking on a dutch bike with peddle breaks that's not something that should be unnoticed ❤️❤️🇳🇱🇳🇱

@@WyattandReyka i'm from the southern part north Brabant near Eindhoven wich is actually where the tech giant Philips was founded aka the light city. If you guys are ever in the netherlands again Eindhoven is a beutiful big city with lots of art, nature and amazing food.

Northern Belgium is mostly 'Dutch' (Vlaams) speaking. Though from Limburg you could hit the German speaking part across that border too I guess.
Ps. There's a hefty fine for cycling while holding your phone. Assuming that's what you used for those shots.

Riding a bike is hard because you have to learn how to countersteer.
Most cyclists don't even realise they are doing this, its completly intuitive.
But if you want to turn right, the first thing you do is actually steer left for a very short moment to start the turn.
Super interesting. Yeah. It’s crazy how intuitive skills become after some time and practice 🤯

Though that wss a canal, not a river. A d I think the fun part is left out: the steep hill you needed to climb.

You've just ridden into Vlaanderen (Flanders), which is the northern Dutch speaking part of Belgium. The southern French speaking part is called Wallonië./Wallonia.....

please put the ball of the foot (the area just past the toes) on the pedal, which allows for the ankle to work as a lever. Much lighter work to pedal a bicycle that way.

🎼I saw 🎶the sign.🎵 How do you know you crossed the border, well at 5 minutes 22 seconds in to the vlog you see a cone-shaped boulder-like pillar from approximately 1 meter high. That's the borderline and you see them at every crossing with a border in Europe. They will be slightly different shaped depending on the country you go into.

That is not a river. It is a canal. It runs almost behind my back yard in Maastricht. Nice that Reyka managed to ride that far. I guess she had real saddle pain coming home that evening. Belgium fries (frite) are alway fried twice. Crispy outside and fluffy inside.

There is not a difference between Dutch and Belgian fries. The mayo makes the biggest difference.
Dutch mayo has less of a sour kick to it. I like both though...

@@WyattandReyka it was nice to see that you came to Belgium. you can cycle along the Albert Canal after Liège from Maastricht. Mom, I can also recommend the most beautiful village in Flanders, Oud Rekem. also within walking distance of Maastricht
I am a 37 year old Dutchman, and till this day I still have moments on my bike that I am terrified by big busses and trucks with trailers passing me.
It can be so scary! One twitch of their hands and you are just squished on the road! Cheers to staying safe out there! 🥰
It’s easier to bike on a bicycle with a smaller handlebars. Reyka’s hanlebars are too broad so that she has more trouble staying upright and also steering is too much fuss. Try a bike with a smaller handlebars. You will find it eazier. Enjoy! From a Mastrichtian!

For foreigners living in the Netherlands and are afraid to get on the bike. Ask your neighbors! 9 out of 10 would be happy to help and teach you.
Just ask, simple as that.

@@WyattandReyka I remember one summer evening, pretty much the whole neighborhood was sitting outside and a bit further down the street there was this guy from Somalia. He was hesitant with a bike by his side, looking around not certain what he should be doing. His neighbors also sitting outside picked up on that and decided to help him out. I went back inside to grab myself a cold one and I returned a few minutes later. By that point there were like 5 people helping him out and not much later biking along with him. I thought that was really awesome and kind hearted.
Wow. What an awesome thing to witness. With such readiness to help, I’m not surprised most Dutch know how to ride bikes. 🥰

@@WyattandReyka It's safe to say 95% of the dutch know how to ride a bike. I've never met a dutch person whom didn't ride a bike from early childhood on. Same goes with swimming. We've all had swimming lessons (school) for multiple years. It was mandatory and a part of our education system. Current day it's voluntarily (a really bad thing if you ask me) so yeah if parents can't afford lessons the kid is out of luck

@@WyattandReyka visual and practical tricks in the design of the road to slow down traffic (mostly cars) for example making the road narrow will slow people down, speed-bunmps, use of colors,, bricks, adding s-curves. The trick is not just to put a sign up that states 30km but to provide hints the brain picks up that a slower speed is needed. The reserve is also true its a known fact that if you make a road wider and strait you invite people to go faster.
So her dad gave up on trying to teach her when she was 13 or 14, and now she's what, 16? She looks very young! Yeah Ok, maybe a little bit older than that. I never get people like that or the parents actually. It's just hard to imagine. Riding a bike starting as a very young kid is something you learn comparable to potty training or walking or playing catch (for a boy). How does that get missed? Firstly in her case, how did it get missed when she was five or six? Even if you're not riding to grade school, you're riding with friends all over messing about. My dad was a hard taskmaster about some things. Spelling and math for instance. But I don't remember anything really hard about his teaching me to ride a bike. Of course most of us had training wheels for a while then, and trikes or Big Wheels. That was one thing. The orientation related to that. I guess there was always Dr. Spock telling parents when things should be happening too. A childhood without bikes? Just unimaginable.
Yeah for me (wyatt) it’s kinda crazy as I also grew up on bikes. But I suppose all of us have gaps in our knowledge. Some can’t swim. Some can’t read. And some can’t bike! It’s cool when in adulthood we don’t become ashamed of these gaps but embrace them and learn these things! 🥰🤗 cheers mate!
