every time Dave Meltzer says something like this about AEW it really just confirms to everyone that Dave Meltzer does not have even the slightest clue about what a story is.
Dave gave Willow/Mercedes 4.5 stars but gave Orton/Owens vs. Tama/Solo 2.25 stars. That tells me Meltzer has no clue how to rate matches anymore.

Things really changed for Meltzer when Conrad Thompson began using Meltzer recaps, rumors, speculation, and opinions on his show with Prichard. It was presented as "this is the historical documentation of what happened, what say you?" When he expanded to other podcasts, Meltzer's reviews became the catalyst for a lot of debates on the shows. Basically, Meltzer was presented as the neutral truth, and now lets hear how Bruce/Eric/JR or whomever will try to squirm their way out of this one. Now, in 2024, his exposure placed him as the "foremost authority" or "THE wrestling historian" in his own mind. He isn't used to pushback or backlash (the best part about being a writer in a dark room pre-2000), so he has become quite sensitive when his "credibility" or "expertise" is challenged. Obviously, he never really had any of those things, but he was still presented as such the last few years. He argues with people because he is clinging to the false idea that he simply knows more than anyone. Literally, the only reason Dave's star ratings are a thing is because Conrad ended each retro review with them for years. I'm 45 and never heard of Meltzer until a few years ago. In wrestling terms, Conrad was such a fan that Dave became a mark for himself.

Dave's been writing about wrestling for a long time so I'll give him that BUT what's concerning is that he's one of the only people writing about wrestling for a long time and people take his views as actual facts when looking at wrestling history. Especially younger fans. They're being presented a very biased and at times one sided picture of what actually happened.
@SchnitzelCFC Thankfully, we are in an era where you can just go back and watch a lot of these matches and segments (if you didn't see them when they originally aired). Shoot interviews are so plentiful that we basically know everybody's perspective on everything multiple times over, whether they were involved or not. Wrestling docs are a dime a dozen. So, with the curtain fully pulled back, Meltzer's account of what he was told by an unnamed source and the wrestling stuff that he likes that nobody else had much access to, really doesn't have much value anymore. We have named sources and we can watch whatever, whenever. But, Meltzer is somehow more prevalent than ever. 🤷😆
Pritchard is full of it. Vinces yes man for 30 years. Same with bischoff. He is I'm all about the truth until he can't remember. As for jr he is better now but for years you felt he was answering the question taking into account how vince would like to hear it.
Doesn't matter if you never heard of him, he was definitely taken as an authority on wrestling long before irrelevant Conrad Thompson. Meltzer's history goes back to the 70s.

It means more than just fast paced moves, but it is completely subjective to Dave's biases and completely miss the point of "working."

Bryan is right. I was really enjoying the story and it seemed to have reached a boiling point and Mariah would have to make her choice...and then nothing happens and they're all happy together and they kiss and hug. It was a big WTF and if Vince McMahon or Vince Russo had done anything like that, the entire IWC would be up in arms and all the most active fans in the community and all the content creators would bury this angle, the booker, the performance and the entire company.

the problem I've noticed with Dave Meltzer is that he will praise AEW's storylines but then refuses, or just plain can't, explain what the storyline actually is.
AEW doesn't have storylines, they have feuds, doesn't mean you can't enjoy AEW tv but a feud is not a storyline. There's a huge difference.
his idea of what constitutes a "storyline" is confounded from his "well the story backstage is..." bullshit where he takes heresay and titdbits and tries to work out and define the angle before it even happens on tv. and that's the build.
Dave doesn't want to lose his access because nobody else wants to deal with him anymore

@@pearcemark2 I've seen WWE wrestlers get suplexed onto a guardrail. Just because that wrestler got injured doing that spot doesn't mean it's dangerous. Wrestlers get injured during regular match as well. A lot of spots are dangerous like diving over the top rope onto the opponent but lots of wrestlers in different promotions do it.
If the defense for Tony Khan's bad management and booking is that he is learning on the job, I have no problem with that. The problem I have is when he charges full price for show tickets and for pay-per-views when the guy is essentially training.
If he wanted fans to pay full price, then he should have gotten someone smarter than him to help guide him or train him to at least put on good shows until he could do it himself. There is no way I would pay to watch these crappy shows when there are better alternatives out there.

Exactly for it to be story they have to follow up, if she gets hit with bottle the next week you have to follow it up otherwise it's not weekly story it's a damm angle,a story progresses, something doesn't happen one week then just get forgotten that's not how episodic TV works. imagine a daily soap Oprah end with cliffhanger then next shows it's never spoken of again, say the villain is finally cornered about to be exposed then next show the bad guy is just getting his groceries like he wasn't trapped😂😂😂😂 who would watch that it's why aew is losing long term viewers.

I thought Dave's tweet about the "no stories people" was actually sarcastic at first because surely of all of the AEW storylines to make that jab about, the trio of ladies making kissy faces at the end of their "can they co-exist?" feud was barely a story at all, let alone the one I'd choose to punch back at the naysayers. And then he started defending it, and I realized he was being serious.
Even a couple of weeks later when Mariah turned on Toni, my immediate question was "WHY DIDN'T SHE DO THIS WHEN MINA WAS THERE?!?!" once you looked past the simple spectacle of Toni bleeding.

@@philwalsh8975 watch the show. Mariah joined Toni to get closer to the belt and rise up as fast as possible. Toni is insane and forced her to act like her to suck up. Toni beat mina and get in between them as well. Mariah snaps and her plan is playing out. It’s been building since last fall. Toni is getting betrayed again for her title just like what happened before she went insane and became timeless. It’s all call backs to the character’s development and what Mariah was like in stardom as well.

Mariah came in as a heel, revealed in her first interview she wanted to meet Toni. This has been building since last all in when Toni went insane the first time and embraced this gimmick change. This is the payoff. Mariah was forced to dress just like Toni and you could see her resentment build. Coming in between her and Mina was the last straw and Mariah the entire time was setting this turn up. Amazing television
