  • After building the foundation with several layers of value, form, and color, we can then start to "dial in" the detail and nuances.
In this master class lesson (7 of 8), I'll demonstrate how to add specific detail shapes to "Cora's" hair. I'll also add some additional shading to her forehead with a very translucent glaze. Next, I darken the left side of her face while smoothing out some of the rough application of previous glazes with a semi-opaque layer that's cooler in tone. Finally, I add nuances to her eyes, lips and chin.
But even though we are well along in this portrait painting, it's not too late to join in the fun!
YOU, too, can paint a portrait!

This is just an amazing tutorial series. The way you explain the emtire process is fantastic!!!
Just one question if I may: Do you only use matte medium for the entire process or do you also use thicker paint?

I don't know where to ask this question so I'm going to ask here in case you see it: why do you use matte varnish as opposed to glossy? And also: what happens if I varnish with gloss varnish after having painted using a matte medium? Thank you!

Great question! I used matte medium because the sheen (shiny-ness when it's dry) is closer to that of the paints themselves. First, the glare from gloss medium is extremely reflective and distracting when you're trying to see what you're painting. Second, gloss medium imparts more saturation to the layer you apply, making it appear darker than it really is. If you end up applying a satin varnish, it could throw off the nuances in the painting. In other words, you could have areas that end up looking lighter than they did while you painted them! Lastly, I've found gloss medium is more milky while wet, so on dark glazes, it makes it very hard to evaluate the correct value.
If you varnish with gloss varnish, it will make your colors look rich and saturated, which is great, but the glare is extremely distracting, in my opinion. I prefer semi-gloss or a satin finish.

@@fineartbymattphilleo thank you so much for answering! You’re my favorite painter! I aspire to learning a lot more from your videos!
PS - I have a whole bottle of gloss varnish now that I bought prior to knowing all this, will the work look bad if I use it still? Even if I’ve painted with the matte medium?

@@Phyto_Chemicals You're very welcome! You could use matte medium and gloss varnish mixed together to make a fantastic satin or semi-gloss varnish. mix them together and test them out on scrap canvas or cardboard. Dry the applications quickly with a hairdryer and adjust your mixture to what you like. Blessings to you!

Jackie, I'm sorry to hear that. I can understand it would be discouraging. Did you see my video on how to overcome struggles in your portrait? That might help.
