ahh, the beautiful liveries of my yesteryears. The lightning bolt Target's. The Kool Green cars. The old Texaco and Kmart cars. All together at Road America. Now that is some serious CART racing.
So was the 1000 HP. To put it in perspective. Dario ran a 1.41.08 I think they said. The Qualifying pole position last year was 1.42. So he was doing faster race laps than last years qualifying. The pole and lap record were set by Dario at 1.38.08 which is blinding fast. 4 seconds faster. But Indy cars today are faster on some road courses and short ovals. No semi automatic gear box back then. Dario's record beat the Audi prototype time.
The sound of the v8 turbo engines derived by those beast of cars of the ages what a memory that is oh god the years of absolute hegemony by ganassi during the split
Indycar, you are so amazing in every single way. You post old races, you stream live races, your tickets are cheap, your drivers are awesome, your schedule is the most diverse series in motor sports, your youtube, indycar.com, facebook, and flickr are inclusive for the fans and most importantly your product is the best in the biz. Thank you Indycar. Thank you thank you thank you!
MORE MORE MORE... THE KEY TO GET US THE FANS EXCITED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF INDYCARS IS TO LET US REMEMBER WHAT EXCITED US IN THE PAST... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK INDYCARS!!
This is so great to see again. Yes if only the new IRL will be like this. Just to see Greg Moore again is such a wonderful thing too. This was my last road race before moving back to Dallas.
OK Indycar, you publish these videos, you see how good the series used to be, how we all long for these days. You have the power to fix it! Stop listening to the car owners listen to us and we will come. Unlock the V6 turbos, let the manufactures make them as powerful as possible, let other chassis manufactures make cars. Make us happy, and we will buy merchandise, go to races, and support the series. FIX THE SERIES!!!! You are getting there. Listen to us!
The problem was IRL which was owned by a few billionaires, and wanted an "American" racing series. So IRL and Indy Cart Series were running the same time. Indy had races all over the world. IRL stayed in the US, and Ovals were the only thing they did. Maybe a couple road courses. Now they are right back were it was. Brilliant. Half the racers stayed the others to iRL. NASCAR open wheel is what it was. An American embarrassment.
Other than Indy, Road America and the Milwaukee Mile are the two best tracks for open wheel racecars in North America. I hope IndyCar will return to these venues in the near future.
I remember these cars had big horsepower. The "secret" Mercedes 500I is an engine people forget. Penske and Mercedes had been building it for the 1994 Indy 500. A one race engine. It was estimated 1200 horsepower. It was a 1-2 finish, no one else was on the lead lap. Of course they used a loophole in the rules. V12 Pushrod.
CART had Ford, Toyota, Mercedes and Honda at one time Lola and Dalara were the main chassis. They had races in 6 different countries. They were getting faster and tech was important. Why did Tony George want to destroy CART? It never made sense. CART was more popular than NASCAR, until marketing to people who really don't know about racing took over.
This is fabulous! I enjoyed these races at Road America immensely! Can you post the 1994 race where a certain rookie took his first CART win?? I always wished I had taped that one!
@foxtrotalphaone When IRL bought CCWS, they also bought all the records, which basically means that all the CART/CCWS races are technically IndyCar races. It also means that from 1996 to 2007, there were two champions in Top American Open-Wheel Racing. It's no different from when CART took over USAC records back in the 80s.
indycar needs to go back to this. different engines, different chassis, aero packages. indycar seems like a jr class just because every car is spec for spec the exact same, minus (basically) 2 different engines. they should take a page out of f1's playbook and give the teams more room to play with the cars.
You've never been to road America then. The track is so big (4+ miles) and the track has put in millions of dollars in improvements. We're talking tens of thousands of people that could fit into that place. Grandstands own the front straight, turn 3, turn 5, turn 6, turn 8, Canada corner, and more.
4+ miles of hills, woods, level ground to watch races at RA! Plus the grandstands for the folks that want em.... I'm 60 and a childhood friend of my mine used to spend many a weekend there with parents and friends, and he wandered the whole grounds.....talks about it fondly today...
I noticed that 'CART' was not in the title or description. I guess when Indycar absorbed Champcar they decided it gave them the right to pawn off it's history as their own.
@NazarethNostalgia Give 'em time, will ya? The 'good old days' of CART are gone now. We're in a new era with a new car, in 2013 the other manufacturers will come with various Aero Kits, there are different (turbocharged) engines, and maybe they'll get a power increase. Having watched CART and ChampCar as a kid, I'm all for this new IndyCar right now.
No i dont think so. I was at the indy race in Milwaukee last week. And Mario Andretti said it will be back in Milwakee next year.so i doubt they will have two races in Wisconsin
Was wondering, Why do we get the wild feed of these races? It's cool and all, but I would really like to see these races with the running order and such on the screen. Still awesome though!
@redriverman2006 SO TRUE. There are entirely too many cautions now, it's a joke. Quit stopping the race every 3 laps like NASCAR does, let it be continuous, it's more exciting and entertaining that way, it makes the mistakes a driver make so much more dramatic.
This is back when they had to hold their breath through the link...I wish it was like that still. But there is a good chance we won’t see a major wreck in the link again at least in Indycar because of the amount of downforce they have.
It’s always a tire that fails! He’s had it happen several times and it puts him out! Why does this happen? Goodyear owes him!! Michael needs better luck!

Great, the actual track feed with commentary and no camera breaks!!! If you have a good sound system, TURN IT UP!!! Those were the days!
This was one of the best memories from my childhood, I'm glad someone got this whole race on youtube.
these cars looked beautiful and sounded AWESOME!

1.58 Miles per Gallon.
Those were the days, that is for sure.
That makes around two standard german bath tubs per Indy 500 xD
I really do miss CART from the 90's was a great competitive series. Haven't watched American open wheel racing since around this time.

I'm so glad this has been posted, not only because it was a good race, but because I was there! I was sitting in the turn 5 bleachers most of the day.
Jealous as can be. Blessed I was at the Texas race they held in 2003 even if it was the race we thought Kenny died
Thank you so much for posting this race. I'm a huge F1 fan but indycar is gaining my respect!

Anyone here during 2020 covid19 pandemics??
Indycar, it's amazing you posted a race from "that other series".
Man, is there anything more beautiful than 80's/90's Formula cars.....Brabham BT52 F1 car being the cream of the crop
The crapwagons of the IRL will never be able to match the excitement of the Champcars.
RIP Greg Moore!
Thanks for posting. While I am at it... Current Indycar is fun to watch, but PLEASE get rid of the funplex outriggers! The cars look ridiculous!

@Malinth66 I just feel they should have mentioned that this was a CART race instead of pretending that CART never existed after '96.

1998, when Champ Car was still better than the IRL.

I know this is the unpopular opinion, but I don't think safety workers should ever be on the track while the green flag is out.
Agreed. And today is the unfortunate anniversary of the death of Jules Bianchi
This was the year MA in the Swift would have won the championship, save for three team mistakes that handed it to Zanardi.
