      Three & 1/2 memorable moments: THE crash, just crazy! Especially the fact that Maciejuk managed to stay upright when he brought down half the field from the bog on the right! When Pogacar attacked and left MvdP behind, and, I have to admit, I did laugh at that guy crushing the picnic table when Pogacar attacked too. It just stood out at the time...wondering if that really did just happen. Perfect timing by the heli-cam! Did miss the woman taking the opportunity to jump into the portaloo though when all that was happening. When ya gotta go... Good opportunity, as I guess there were no line ups at that critical stage!

    By Pogačar's Age, Merckx had already tested positive for the first of several other times throughout his career. Why do we keep making these comparisons? Why are his records still relevant? Why does everyone just brushes his cheating under the rug? Isnt it pretty hypocritical?

    • @Tibovl
      @Tibovl ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Because everyone else in the peleton was doped to the gills too. Scrapping Merckx's records and giving them to the next substance abuser in line is not a solution.

    Mistakes and crashes. Why did MVDP get stuck at the back? Why did he attack Pogi? Should have stayed on his wheel and sprinted for the win. The crash did have an effect on the finish. Look at the blood running down his knee at the finish. Why did it take the DS of TJV so long to send back a teammate for WVA? Whilst, Pogi is very good, Merckx was and is still the best. Just have a look at his records.

Pogi has never done the Giro. Pogi did the Vuelta once in 2019. Merckx won 11 grand tours. Pogi's best result at attending four World Road Championships is 18th. Apples to oranges.

    Oh No! Not the NCL again. They tried the crit format in the nineties and it was a joke. The "teams" competing on the day I saw them were made up of all local riders - not exactly an intercity or inter-regional competition.
    I hate to say it, but as much as I love cycling in all it's disciplines, in the U.S., it is, and will remain so, a backwater sport. The NCL is yet another feeble attempt to garner popularity in a fully saturated North American sports market. Well, good luck to them.

  • @johnsenior478

    MVDP rode like MVDP…and at least he attacked and contributed and even though it was obvs he couldn’t win he never stopped trying until he crossed the line. I’m not sure if he’d burnt no matches he could have stayed with POG. WVA - peaked too early - and looked vulnerable in E3. Pog just incredible. UCI usual hopeless reactive garbage. They pretend there’s a rule, never enforce it so riders ignore it, oops- there’s a crash - so now the rule exists. Too much time on sock length - not enough on looking at how racing is changing and what worked in the 50’s will not translate to the modern era unless you want careers ruined. The riders are the sport- look after them.

    So with regards to disqualification for going off road. Don’t you think if the rule is automatic disqualification then you will have more serious crashes as riders will do everything to stay on the road instead of taking the best chance of outcome by going off road ?
    But on the flip side if someone does go off-road and affect the race is that really fair. Flip side if that flip side is that racing isn’t fair and you have on road crash that affect results.
    So I think off road should be fair and unless a rider has a deliberate agressive move it should be fair game. C’est la vie.

  • @woutkoopman
    @woutkoopman ปีที่แล้ว

    I think when it comes to punishing riders it has to be situational cause there are so many factors at play. What if the rider had a blown tire and caused a similar crash? What if the road has a hole in it and he crashes, etc. etc. In this case he was clearly at fault for riding where there was no road, but if there would've been a road or a path of sorts he wouldn't have had the crash. I'm assuming riders couldn't possibly know the parkours that detailed that they could be doing this on purpose.

    I don't get at all why the DSM ambush is so controversial.
    It's tactics, if you wanna dictate the pace be at the front. If you don't wanna be caught off guard be at the front. It's no different than riders pulling off intentionally to break the elastic on climbs and echelons.
    I never understood why this isn't done more often, even in TDF stages, if you have a strong man in the breakaway you should be trying to slow down the bunch.
    From what I gather, most of the pros are just congratulating DSM, it's the critics and pundits who are making a fuss out of this

    • @danielguinea2971
      @danielguinea2971 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well in fact this tactic (maybe in another level) is common also in grand tours and other competitions. Big teams tend to block the road to not let any dangerous rider go to a breakaway for example. Jumbo tends to block the peloton very often

    The team DSM jam, has cost a lots of watts to some favourites, and teams especially due to the 40km chase following this perfidious strategy.
    The fall of Girmaye and Moho etc happens at the end of the long hectic chase.
    Laporte, WVA and yumbos, VDP and teammates, all burning matches as caught behind of this mid race play, from the beginning it felt like VDP had a bigger target on his back then Pogacar, who everybody knew he was still frustrated about his missed sprint last time.
    Since no DSM is to be seen at the end, and the chase did not affect Pogi that much, one has to ask, is DSM sports director taking credit for the UAD win of the day ?
    Without any discipline of these unsportsmanlike play, It would not be suprising that this contributes to feud in the futur fights for position, and road rage tentions in the directors cars.
    The crashes that where consecutive to that hectic chase, the futur tentions in the peleton and the staffs, this kind of trickery is not a good thing for the sport. It’s now back in the playbook of the youg athletes the new audience and competitve week end racers and the pro scene.
    The great Dan Loyd should admit it, even if DSM shares a bond to his former cervelo palmarès, this arguable strategy is straight out from a cheaters guide.
    Sorry, Dan, respect for all the great analysis, but I think you missed this crutial one.
    You are not alone, a lot of analysts are still napping on that mid race crutial difference, that probably made the difference between Pogacar and VDP in the end, and that probably cost Laporte and Wout a few matches, not even talking of the rest of the field, the peleton is not divided on this particular event, they all suffered and DSM didn’t gain anything from it. If not bad reputation, especially for his DS.
    What’s next, lucha libre technics of throwing dust in the eyes and pinching nipples?

    I don't agree with Dan on the disqualification because sometimes they use the side of the road to prevent or escape some crashes

    • @georgehugh3455
      @georgehugh3455 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      True, but I think Dan and the judges would let that kind of thing pass. He's right that it was _purely the resulting major crash_ that led to the DQ. So if the judges think that "moving up" maneuver was disqualifying, then similarly motivated maneuvers that don't cause crashes should also lead to a DQ.
      (Of course, this leads to the question: If a rider throws an elbow, or a head _a-la-Cavendish,_ at another rider and misses completely - is that disqualifying?)

  • @japphan
    @japphan ปีที่แล้ว

    I strongly disagree about your take on dq rules for going outside the road. The question is quite complex, and should be treated as such.
    Let me elaborate:
    1. Sometimes getting off the road is a way to prevent crashes, successfully or not.
    2. Sometimes it is inadvertent.
    3. Sometimes trying to gain an advantage by going off the road is safe (basically as safe as staying on the road).
    4. Sometimes it is dangerous and nothing happens.
    5. Sometimes it is dangerous and something happens.
    No sane person would punish people in category 1, and most would not want to punish people in group 2. (You could make an argument for punishing it, since avoiding getting yourself in a situation where you might get off the road is your responsibility.)
    There is an obvious difference between 3 and 4-5.
    In most legal systems, there is a difference between 4 and 5. If you drive recklessly without injury, your punishment will be lower, than if you hurt someone. Whether this should be the case is up for debate. You will come to different conclusions depending on what system of ethics you use, and both positions are valid. (Yes, I have studied moral philosophy)
    It is also about the _level_ of danger. Risk of crash and danger of potential crash.
    Here we have high speed (high danger in case of crash), many riders (more danger for more cyclists) and a medium risk of causing something. That means we should have a fairly harsh punishment. If you want to make the sentence more harsh because of the fact that is caused by the crash.
    I would also like to add
    6. You can be off the designated road willingly without the intent of gaining an advantage, for instance to talk to someone.
    ---
    My opinion:
    There should be no difference between this rule and the other rules concerning endangerment and cheating, than with other phenomena.
    Are you trying to gain an advantage by bending the rules? Treat it like sticky bottles.
    Are you doing dangerous maneouvers? Treat it like line deviations in sprints.
