FINALS U1900 Event Jacob Younce (1986) vs. Stephane Charmot (1916) @ US Nationals 2024

In the final I played the winner of the u1800 event. This player was having a strong tournament as well. I knew he was tough from watching his other matches. His serves were deceptive with either heavy topspin or heavy bottom spin and it was really hard to judge. Then his shots were really spinny with a lot of side spin making it hard to judge what the ball was going to do when it landed.. he was a very nice guy and we both had a long drive home so we started our final match early. In game 1 it was very close but he took the edge and won 12-10. The second game I had to dig deep because I was down 9-3 but I fought back and won 11-9. I just kept remembering what Federer said about playing the next point.
The third game I was down again 10-7 and was able to fight back to win 12-10. I was up 2 games to 1 now on a strong opponent who had made comebacks against other players. So I just kept focusing on trying to initiate the attack first and just spin consistently on the table. I went up 10-7 with a chance to win 3 championship points and he fought back and won that game 12-10. We both had come back to tie the game and we knew we had a tough fifth game ahead.
I kept my game plan on and also started to serve the ball with changes in speed and placement to his middle which helped take the advantage. I got some good front hand counters in and he missed some shots and it put me at another 10-7 lead. I was nervous from the previous comebacks but I focused and said just spin the service back to his backhand. I did and he missed the spin shot and I won the championship. 🏅
