technically, since seashells contain trace amounts of alkaline metals, and during the cyanate step, they were converted into alkali cyanates, and when the can was cooking at a campfire, the cyanate was converted to Alkaline metal cyanides (it is trace amounts) Then during the step, where i've dissolved the slag in nitric acid, Hydrogen cyanide was most likely released in trace amounts, so yes, Cyanide vapours indeed WERE present, however they were not as prevalent.

You had things going well up until the final step. Less solvent, more accurate neutralization and you would have had far better yield.

According to an article if you alkylate the primary amine to afford the secondary amine and then anodically oxidize it you can get isocyanides
I remember how long it took Explosions and Fire to get through this prep, lol. Fun to rewatch this process, years later, done by someone else.

Stuff like using a pot + pan or a tin as reaction vessels is glorious
The funny part is that you could make nitroglycerin way easier by using the sulfuric acid and the nitric acid and the sodium hydroxide to make nitroglycerin.
sodium hydroxide will neutralise the ng :) Also 5-atz is a way more interesting procedure than a one step reaction, and it can be upgraded later on to be a bunch more powerful than NG
@@Prussian_Blue Well I was talking about extracting glycerin from tallow or fat and then nitrating to make nitroglycerin. I do agree 5-atz is more interesting though.

Although I must admit that the pentavalent carbon in your calcium cyanamide drawing, and even the whole drawing in and out of itself made me shed a few tears. It's probably a polymeric structure of alternating Ca2+ and -N=C=N- bidentate ligands rather than this suspicous looking monomeric complex 😉

I would imagine that the Ca(NCO)2 wasn't nearly as toxic as the HNCO or its decomposition produce CaCN2.

Ok wtf. It's the 2nd video being recommend to me today about making explosives. The 1st was was an actual legit way to make 1st grade TNT as well. Is fbi trying to gete on a watch list? Weird af. I've never searched on how to make high explosives. The only explosives I've ever tried to search for a recipe was black powder because I am an avid musket and blacl powder revolver enthusiast and I wanted to make BP on the cheap. But it was years ago and I gave up because dangerous. And now TH-cam is like "heres how to synthesize TNT with basic lab tools but if you can't do that here's how you make something similar in a fucking shed"
