- The "Minuet in G Major, BWV Anhang 114" is one of the most popular pieces attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach. For a long time, this piece was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, but it is now generally accepted that it was composed by Christian Petzold.
The piece is part of the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, a collection of music composed by various musicians for Bach's second wife.
The piece was composed around 1725 and included in the notebook compiled in Leipzig, Germany. The Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach contains music written by J.S. Bach as well as contributions from other composers of the period.
The notebook was a family endeavour, aimed at providing musical education and enjoyment for the Bach household. It served as both a teaching tool for the Bach children and a source of entertainment.
The piece is a minuet, which is a type of dance in 3/4 time that was popular in the Baroque period.. It is written in the key G Major. However, for my version it is in the key of C.
With this piece, I’m playing the original beautiful piano first, then progressively add the violin, then the cello and transforming it into a three piece ensemble at the end. I really like the violin melody I created and that it blend in very harmoniously. Also did a little bit of syncopation between the violin and the cello at the end to make it sound more interesting. About the composer:
Christian Petzold was born on September 12, 1677, in Bautzen, Germany, and died on May 2, 1733, in Dresden, Germany.
For many years, this piece was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach because it appeared in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach (1725), a collection that included works by various composers. Petzold was a German composer and organist, relatively lesser-known compared to J.S. Bach, but he made notable contributions to the music of his time.
Petzold served as an organist at the Sophienkirche (Sophia Church) in Dresden. His works included keyboard compositions, many of which were not widely recognized until later periods. His music gained posthumous fame partly due to the inclusion of his minuets in the Bach family's music books, such as the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach.
The "Minuet in G Major" is beloved for its simplicity and grace. Its straightforward structure and beautiful melody make it an ideal piece for both beginner musicians and seasoned performers. It is often used as an introductory piece for piano students because of its simple structure and manageable technical demands.
