I'm 76 and started learning cello right before the Covid lockdown. I'm enjoying it immensely, and am only sorry I didn't start sooner. I've played both violin and viola long ago , but I must say that for me, (at this stage in my life), the cello is the most fulfilling by far Instrument for the soul!

As a drummer, I've been heavily into rock/metal, then funk/jazz/fusion, pop/progressive. Never was a fan of Classical, but approaching my 30s, I've come to love it. It feels like after going through various relationships, I've come round to meet my true love - Classical music! I ditched the piano as soon as my parents gave up on my continuous attempt to skip classes, but I've started again👍 Just loving the simple yet beautiful sound of a single cello in this video. Great work!

For an instant a sorrow caught me. Annabel, if you ever wanted to master the violoncelo, if you ever wanted to dive deep into Bach's music and bring it to life with perfection, if you ever wanted to touch the soul of any human anywhere with your nature given talent and honoured work upon it, you have made it! It's good. I watch with interest as to how you might alter the playing of these suites as you get older. As Rostropovich said, Bach's Cello Suites change as we age and they grow with us.

There’s a smooth and connected quality to your interpretation of Bach that is exquisite. Thank you Annabel, it’s lovely to watch but most particularly, to hear. I like your long and reflective pauses between movements as you gather yourself emotionally to prepare for the next piece. A really great musical performance. Your love for the instrument and Bach’s music is compelling.
Well put. I think that she plays with a a very suitable, thoughtful and sombre tone as well. Her phrasing just makes sense and she leaves enough space between the notes to show the inner musical structure of the phrases, while still playing in a clear and calm flow. I especially loved the allemande. I have been listening to Bach's music for more than a decade, and I have never felt the allemande as I did today.
Out of all the wonderful interpretations on TH-cam, I am most deeply moved by yours. You play as if you are communicating with the gods. The ethereal resonance of the church is such a boon to your interpretation, and of course, this is exactly the sort of acoustic Baroque music with its sparing vibrato was meant for. Cellists can learn much from your pure, organ-like playing, especially the low pedal tones which you pull with speed and let ring under successive notes. The wooden gentleman you are playing is very handsome. The unusually thin f-holes are incredibly elegant and the wide low bouts distinctive. I would say you could take more time, enjoy the spaces between the notes more, in the Allemande and Sarabande. You are not rushing, but you sometimes sound as if you are in a rush. Your playing overall is very ethereal, which certainly befits the Sixth, but I think you have opportunities, especially in the more extroverted movements, to be a bit more earthy and textured - more volume, tone, grit. You can swing from your heels more. This can also provide more contrast between the movements. The country jig you made of the Gavotte was such a wonderful contrast from the lyricism of the rest of your playing. The joyously fat and assertive low Ds you ended the Gigue and Courante were spectacular - don't just save the best for last! Anyway - bravo!
