    Awww! I was worried for a bit there. I had a chickie baby that had that and after seeing a video about it, I used a band-aid cut lengthwise to hold her two legs together overnight. She was much better in the morning but still not completely straight up so I did it again the next night. (She is a RIR so no feathers on her legs to worry about pulling out when removing the band-aid) and after seeing how well she was doing, she was finally able to go in with her flock friendies and is thriving so much. After losing 4 chicks total of the 14 I was sent, I was so scared she would be the fifth. But, she wasn't and thank goodness she is doing awesome now! I'm brand new to chickie baby ownership but I've learned a lot through the process. I think I'll have a higher success rate the next time I order chickie babie. :)

    I've been able to help some with spraddle leg, and some I haven't. I've used the cup method and also a pipe cleaner and piece of straw to make a tiny hobble. One major thing to help is having them on a non-slippery surface right from hatch. Glad they got better!

      Cheryl's Hen House thanks for sharing your experience, too. Do you know why it happens? I had another hatch today with it - same breed. Is it an incubator problem or a breeder problem?

    • @BarbdWireNRoses1
      @BarbdWireNRoses1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ChickenHues I wish I knew with certainty, but if it happens with all of the same breed, I would have to say it's something specific to that breed..parent Birds were vitamin deficient or just genetics? I've also noticed that if they stay in a slick surface incubator for quite a while they develop it. I line the bottom of my incubator with cabinet liner now at lock down, and its really helped. I enjoy your videos, your flock looks great!

    I'm currently having issues trying to fix splayed/spraddle leg in a rescue baby robin. He/she has been with me literally since they were less than a day old (nest was attacked & 110% abandoned). He's about 2 weeks old now & thriving in literally every way possible except for his poor legs, & unfortunately he didn't show any signs until a few days ago.
    We're currently trying a rubber mat with the athletic tape that sticks to itself but not to skin (the kind of tape that you usually get around your arm after giving blood), but it's hard because his poor legs went through hell a few days ago with the sponge method (& he likes to rip off the athletic tape 😒😑🤦‍♀️). I STRONGLY recommend avoiding the makeup sponge treatment because they can easily cut off circulation & cause permanent damage. He had them on for 11hrs before any swelling started, & I literally checked on him every 30 minutes to make sure they weren't too tight, but somehow they still were (I'm never gonna forgive myself for that, even though the damage is minimal).
    Unless we can somehow fix his legs, the chances of him surviving on his own isn't likely, which makes everything much more challenging. I've raised & cared for baby birds for years, & never have I ever had such trouble with spraddle leg before (or had possible loss of circulation &/or swelling). Infact, all babies of mine that did have it in the past were easily fixed in 2-7 days max, & they all moved on to live happy & healthy lives. Some actually fixed themselves just by having better traction.
    I greatly appreciate videos like these, especially because there's a HUGE lack of information, & an even bigger surplus of misinformation on the internet when it comes to birds in general. I wish I had found this glass method & the athletic tape method first, because either would've been much easier before the baby doubled in weight, started growing wings, & opened his eyes. I also just got an expensive & highly recommended 2oz calcium supplement on Amazon that'll be here today, so fingers crossed that it helps (it's called "Morning Bird Calcium Plus Supplement"). This baby is getting better treatment than how I treat myself lmfao 🤣😂🥰🐣
    Again, PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO CUT OFF CIRCULATION IF USING SPONGES!!! Even a trained professional like myself or your vet can screw it up, despite dozens of multiple successful sponge treatments in the past. It's SO important to carefully watch & reassess any & all treatments & dressings applied to baby birds for spraddle/splayed leg treatment (& also closely monitor their behavior & poop). If anyone has any other suggestions to help with a difficult case of spraddle/splayed legs, please let me know (even if it's not common)! The baby is also getting a few other vitamins & supplements mixed in with almost every meal. He literally loves anything that's mixed in with his favorite organic blueberry & banana baby food (preservative & color dye free).
