''This game is what Henry Ford had in mind for the future of the automobile'' Thanks for that bit of trivia, Mark. Classic Game Room is both fun and educational
This was possibly the very first Playstation game I played and I loved it. You can't beat getting the front of the car completely nackered and having to reverse around the bowl picking up those last few points.
The Playstation had so many great games during it's launch window. I remember playing this at my cousin's house and wanting to run out for my own copy. It was pretty state of the art back then!
I remember when this game came out when i was a kid. I rented it from Hollywood video, I was blown away by the destruction physics. I could never afford it, but i had some of the best destruction derby memories for those three days. =D
they need to remaster this series, more cars, bigger tracks, updated graphics, slight enhancement to the physics engine and online play. I could play this all day racing other humans trying to wreck them plus I always wanted to use one of the other 19 sprite vehicles
Loved this game so much as a kid! Thanks for reviewing this game! This game had some of the best music and even better game play for the playstation. Thanks Ryan for sending this game to CGR for review!
The best strategy for me seemed to be to try to stay in 2nd place the whole race since you get double points for spinning the first-place car. Then try to win on the last lap or two.
RIP Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool 1984-2012 Destruction Derby was one of the very first Playstation games I remember playing, since they were released within about a month of each other. Loved it. Sooooooooo much.
I've played this game on every Playstation console so far, including the handhelds, and I regularly listen to the soundtrack, plus I still have my original copy to hand
I remember this game being the first PlayStation game that blew my mind. The first time I saw the cars being progressively damaged as you went along was a gaming memory I will never forget. Also, this was called Demolition Derby in Europe, if I'm not mistaken.
When I was 14 and I was playing this game, my dad saw me playing and looked at the game footage. He then said "Now I know I'm never gonna buy you a car."
This was one of the first games I had as a kid growing up. I remember wasting so many hours playing it and sometimes loving it and sometimes hating it. I had the original box though the big ass rectangular one without the ugly ugly ass greatest hits colors on it. I remembered when they went to the smaller boxes and I kind of hated it because I always lost my games for the PSX, I loved the bigger boxes they felt grander, had it for Resident Evil, Extreme Games, Tekken, etc. Glory days.
cool, I've seen that feature on a few other PS games, pretty impressive since it only had 2MB of RAM, guess they were very small games without the music
I first got this game on the PC...15-16 years ago. I played it a lot for a week then got bored. I recently got it again on my PS3 (PSN) and I have to say the game is far better when you are more mature lol.
I'm pretty sure this is the first game I ever rented! My dad got picked it out because he was addicted to Daytona USA and didn't want to go to the arcade. He hated this game so I got to play it.
Note: The entire game fits into RAM so you can swap the disc after loading the first track and the CD you choose will play all but the first track on the disc!
I remember when this came out...I bought it for me and my brother to play...but had NO idea what that "system link" meant......when we got it home and discovered there was no two player option on it, we tried to return it....but they wouldn't give a refund b/c of the "open game" policy they had.....my dad raised some hell and they let us exchange it so I ended up getting Twisted Metal.....if it was just me, I would have kept it.
This is the game that made me realise that the PSX was more powerful with 3d than the Sega Saturn. I was a big Saturn fan and believed some of the claims that it was simply difficult to program on, but when the Playstation started coming out with games like this (and Wipeout, etc.), my heart broke, lol.
This looks just ok, but Destruction Derby 64 is like one of the best multiplayer games in existence! Gotta review that one while playing with 3 other peeps. Very fun.
my dad's firehouse has a ps2 and someone donate a disc of destruction derby for the system, the disc doesn't work any more but when I'd play it it was a very fun game
The amazing thing is that after all these years, people still play the game the same way. Do you guys know why Mark is drving backwards? To hit everyone without destroing the engine, because you loose the game when the engine blows.. Cool times, i loved this back in the day..
I agree I mean look at Dirt Showdown. That's a demolition derby type game and the graphics are flawless. Some other pc games like Rigs of Rods are particularly good with its soft body physics.
I was actually thinking of Diablo 3 and Ubisoft with their always-on DRM even during singleplayer. Ubisoft stopped using always-on DRM recently. Steam at least has "Play Offline" mode.
One of the 3 games that was in the box of my graphics card. Really loved it! But I think the music was different on the PC. I remeber some rock style music. You could even play it on a normal CD Player, because the songs were wav files.
They should reboot this series.Imagine playing this with modern visuals, havok physics and online play... 30 people in an arena for all out royal rumble mode!
...then there's the N64 version which is very different (Created by THQ and Looking Glass studios) and somewhat, pretty fun. There's bonus vehicles like the Taxi cab, a Hot rod, a Lowrider, and one of the best: the Ambulance. (Wee Woo, Wee Woo, Wee Woo, )
I'm not a Sony fan these days. I've moved on from the PlayStation brand, but this is an excellent game and easily one of my favorite PSX (that's what they called the PS1 in its era) titles.
Sorry,I apoligize if I offended you. I've had the opportunity to test a GCW Zero prototype and its a top notch device. I just wanted to spread the word out about its kickstarter.
those original PSX games came in big cardboard or jewel cases, I think it had something to do with the book manuals, My DD, Tekken 1, Ridge Racer, and a few other games are in those big rectangular boxes or jewel cases
I loved this one, even despite the somewhat screwy scoring system. Hated the sequel, the derbys were impossible to control and the wrecking racing didn't feature any of the close quartered smashing that made the original so fun.
''This game is what Henry Ford had in mind for the future of the automobile''

big973e look into wreckfest on steam
Loved this game so much as a kid! Thanks for reviewing this game! This game had some of the best music and even better game play for the playstation. Thanks Ryan for sending this game to CGR for review!
''[Destruction Derby] is what Henry Ford had in mind for the future of the automobile.'' - had me in tears.
The "physics" and damage models completely blew my mind at the time lol. It's absolutely crazy how far technology has developed in just 20 years
Psygnosis were masters of the game development craft back in the PSX days man. Wish they were still around.
The best strategy for me seemed to be to try to stay in 2nd place the whole race since you get double points for spinning the first-place car. Then try to win on the last lap or two.
This was actually my first experience I had with the PS1 on a Blockbuster's back in 95-96.
There may be only like 8 race courses plus arenas, but the courses change configurations every season.
This was a must have when the Playstation was released. Will go into the history books as a solid game.
RIP Psygnosis/Studio Liverpool 1984-2012
Destruction Derby was one of the very first Playstation games I remember playing, since they were released within about a month of each other. Loved it. Sooooooooo much.
This was my very first PS1 game, played and loved the heck out of it back in the day. Much underrated and still my favorite game in the series.
This was my first game on PS1 after i played Sega Genesis. The whole idea of car crashing, graphics and gameplay was so mindblowing, it felt magical!!
The announcer, the characters, the destruction what is not to love about this game!!..I can still remember the code for no damage!
I remember this well - One of my favourite games for the PS.
It sure is. Played it a few times at a friend's house and with Spyro, Tekken and Discworld it's one of my favourite games for the PSX.
Had this for the PC. Absolutely loved it!!!!!!!! DD2 was just.. awesome too!
I don't think I could ever get tired of this game. Destruction Derby 2 is a must play though, one of my all time favourite games! :D
I had this on PC. Played the hell out of it, loved it.
This brings back a lot of good memories! They don't make games like this anymore....
man, i loved these games as a kid...
Wow, I remember this game! A lot of beer and nachos were consumed back in the day when my friends and I used to play this.
That first year of the PS1 is hard to beat. Most fun year in gaming for me.
When I was 14 and I was playing this game, my dad saw me playing and looked at the game footage. He then said "Now I know I'm never gonna buy you a car."
yep, back in the day when i was young I looked forward to getting this game along with playstation at xmas. A good game indeed
5:04 that scream was so funny😂😂
Destruction Derby 2 was one of my fav games. It had a pretty kickass soundtrack and that almost scary menu music.
Back when this game was release i thought the graphics were so real, especially the mountain/trees in the background.
Great review, great game ~ Classic Game Room puts out rockin' stuff! :)
i LOVED this game as a kid...piff still do
This was one of the first games I had as a kid growing up. Glory days.
I absolutely loved this game. Played the hell out of it. DD2 is also amazing too.
I still enjoy playing an enhanced version of this on my Xperia Play! The game was great and kind of a new idea at the time.
Yes agree...And with the new consoles it would make very sence to unveil 4th DD with massive particle and physics effects.
Phenomenal review. This was also one of my first games ever!
I'm more of a Destruction Derby 64 kind of guy myself, but this game was fun too. If only DiRT Showdown could've been this good.
cool, I've seen that feature on a few other PS games, pretty impressive since it only had 2MB of RAM, guess they were very small games without the music
Mark you absolutely have to review Destruction Derby 2 for the PS1 as well, it's not a great deal different but it's heaps of fun too!!!
Fun times with this one back in the day :)
Man I loved this and Destruction Derby 2.
Such good games!
I remember renting this from Movie Gallery in the 90's. Pretty good PS1 game. I also played the N64 version later.
One of the first games I've ever played. Good times...
Here's a tip. Run backwards. ALL THE TIME. It allows you to take much more damage than normal.
I first got this game on the PC...15-16 years ago. I played it a lot for a week then got bored. I recently got it again on my PS3 (PSN) and I have to say the game is far better when you are more mature lol.
Still waiting on that Demolition Racer review Mark!! It would be PERFECT for you!
I'm pretty sure this is the first game I ever rented! My dad got picked it out because he was addicted to Daytona USA and didn't want to go to the arcade. He hated this game so I got to play it.
You should totally review Sled Storm for the PS1. And I don't care that Undertow has done it, I want YOU to do it!
Jokes on you, I'm still waiting for Mark to release it in some form so I could listen it nonstop.
DD2 was always my fav as I found DD1 racing style abit too cramped for my liking but for a 1995, it's it's purely legit! Time to go back to it!
Have this one for the Sega Saturn :)... also had alot of fun playing Destruction Derby Raw on the PS1
I recently found a box full of old PS and PS2 games I played as a youth, I should send them to Mark, but he probably already has some of them.
Note: The entire game fits into RAM so you can swap the disc after loading the first track and the CD you choose will play all but the first track on the disc!
Codemasters should make a Destruction Derby type game, i'm sure alot of Americans in the US would love it, they do love Destruction.
I loved the PC demo back in the day but didn't have enough pocket money to afford the full game.
Not mentioned in the review... This game also has a great sense of humor!
Favorite game as a kid. First one too
Man ps1 was great My favorite games were destruction derby, ridge racer, doom, xcom, jumping flash and resident evil all great games series.
Tip: In the bowl of destruction just keep driving reverse bordering on Wall that you hit a lot of cars and take minor damages
From Shadow of the Beast to Destruction Derby, Reflections was a rad company back in the day.
ALWAYS like this game. If I still had my playstation that I sold in my garage sale, this would be the only game I would have for it.
Very fun.
Could you review destruction derby raw please.
my dad's firehouse has a ps2 and someone donate a disc of destruction derby for the system, the disc doesn't work any more but when I'd play it it was a very fun game
The amazing thing is that after all these years, people still play the game the same way. Do you guys know why Mark is drving backwards? To hit everyone without destroing the engine, because you loose the game when the engine blows.. Cool times, i loved this back in the day..
I put sooo may hours into this all those years ago. Fantastic game.
update: RAW is actually the third game in the series. I played it as a kid... its awesome.
I agree I mean look at Dirt Showdown. That's a demolition derby type game and the graphics are flawless. Some other pc games like Rigs of Rods are particularly good with its soft body physics.
This game was GREAT! Also, lol at the cracked CD case.
I was actually thinking of Diablo 3 and Ubisoft with their always-on DRM even during singleplayer. Ubisoft stopped using always-on DRM recently. Steam at least has "Play Offline" mode.
this games brings some great memory's
why you didn´t played this game on the saturn back in the day?
One of the 3 games that was in the box of my graphics card.
Really loved it!
But I think the music was different on the PC.
I remeber some rock style music.
You could even play it on a normal CD Player, because the songs were wav files.
They should reboot this series.Imagine playing this with modern visuals, havok physics and online play... 30 people in an arena for all out royal rumble mode!
holy shit thats nostalgy!
i remember when i was 3 years old i've played this game on my windows 95 system haha!
epic game! :D
Haha, gotta love a game about smashing cars. You should review Vigilante 8, which is aslo for PS1
Cracked out on this game as a kid! Liked the second one a little bit more tho.
this series deserves a reboot
Mark have you reviewed Twisted Metal?
Destruction derby 2!!! You must play this!!!
...then there's the N64 version which is very different (Created by THQ and Looking Glass studios) and somewhat, pretty fun. There's bonus vehicles like the Taxi cab, a Hot rod, a Lowrider, and one of the best: the Ambulance. (Wee Woo, Wee Woo, Wee Woo, )
OMG...I remember Destruction Derby!
Haha, I forgot all about linking PS1s together for multiplayer way back when. :p
i used to have a later game in the series, DD: Arenas for the ps2, and i really enjoyed that one.
I'm not a Sony fan these days. I've moved on from the PlayStation brand, but this is an excellent game and easily one of my favorite PSX (that's what they called the PS1 in its era) titles.
CGR, you REALLY need to review Colin McRae Rally 1 and 2.0, and ToCA Touring Cars 1 and 2.
This game was amazing at the time
i played the shit out of this when it was new. was probably my favorite playstation game all thru it's lifecycle.
Memories!
The frame rate is pretty solid for an early PSone game!
Destruction Derby 64 was my favorite! They should make DD3 on next Gen!
Nice Henry reference!
