    These are my favorite Midi Keyboards for right around $100. At the time of this upload, all of the MIDI keyboards mentioned in this video are just under the $100 price point. Prices do tend to fluctuate so be aware of that. However, I have been watching the prices of these keyboards for a few months now, and the prices have not changed. Each of these keyboards provides something slightly different and I hope that one of them turns out to be exactly what you've been looking for!

    WOW! What an amazing MIDI keyboard controller comparison video. What I appreciate most about you Patrick, is your honesty, down-to-Earth, & humble approach. These traits come through in every video of yours.
    I just started my own independent label, on a shoestring budget. Your videos are definitely helping me become better versed.
    I have only seen Artiria products on either eBay or on TH-cam. I absolutely love Arturia products; their build quality, innovative designs, technology R&D, etc. I have a friend who has an Arturia product, & he swears by the brand.
    As for me, I have a Novation Remote 37SL MKII controller. It is relatively heavier, a bit bulky on the road or walking, but the build quality is A++.
    The Arturia controller in this amazing video is so fantastic, small but powerful, etc. Looking back I truly wish I bought the Novation Remote 25.
    Sorry for the long comment, but I just wanted to say how much I like this & all of your videos. You are doing a great service to the people with all of your videos.
    Best Regards,
    STEPHEN W.

    Hi Pat, well your roundup helped me immensely. I had nearly dropped the hammer on an Axiom 32 (it was cheap) though I didn't know it had been superceded and disowned. The Akai appealed but I had a cassette deck of theirs back in the 80's and the build quality was really poor so I discounted it.
    Then when you got to the Minilab mk2... build and great bundle, yep that hits the mark. I have one ordered and it lands tomorrow, I am STOKED! Daft how giddy a "new toy" can make you feel eh? The last time I dabbled with DAWs I never had a controller and Ableton wasn't a thing, software looks to have come a long way...
    Your lucid, amiable and easy on the ear! All the best from Yorkshire UK, subbed.

    I have had my AKAI mpk mini for 3 years now. it travels with me everywhere and still look like new. I have it working with multiple Daw and prod software, even with FL studio is working fine. its by far the best portable midi I've had. I dont know how can you break a key on these things, unless you are a savage which makes you prob break anything. the design its just perfect and light. thanks for the video.

      I agree with you Nelson. I've had my MPK mini for about 4 years and out of all the portable MIDI keyboards that I've had it's the best. Build quality is solid compared to Alesis or M Audio. I quickly got used to the mini keys so I don't cry over them like some people do. Although I don't use the nobs or the drumpads as I use a MPC500 for drums it's nice to know that if I had to I could use them. For size and usability it's hard to beat

    I have been watching hours worth of videos, trying to learn what or if any midi keyboards to buy for my protools set up. I have a full size electric piano in my studio space. You have been more informative than all of the 20 other videos spent time on this morning. I really hope I win on of these. I see the benefit absolutely! You made it all very understandable while pointing out key functional differences so eloquently! I'm excited about the next chapter in my musical evolution. I've subscribed to your channel. from what i've seen the Akai MPK Mini's software lets you change the functionality of the joystick and the drum pads which is pretty versatile - so it's gonna be my pick as a casual musician who has a tiny desk and can't afford the space for something with full size keys.

    Hi! I'd like to know your thoughts on the critical reviews on Amazon for the Arturia. They say that 1) the knobs don't work well with other types of DAW because they have no start/end points; 2) the version 1 software worked well but not version 2; and 3) the drum pads aren't sensitive. For me it's a close call between this and two Akais, one being the mini you reviewed here... so some more info would be really helpful!!

    I have an Arturia MiniLab MKII Black Edition and it's been an awesome MIDI keyboard! I have also gotten a lot of use out of the Analog Lab Lite software that come with it (it also has a VST plugin). It seems it has the largest amount of included software for the price. I like how the keys feel compared to the Akai MPK Mini as well as they are slightly larger in comparison. Also, speaking as a person that owns two Novation Launchpad MIDI controllers, when I saw 16 knobs, I was sold...

    *Question*: I'm not a producer or anything at all. Just started out using FL and still learning. Looking for a "cheap" midi keyboard so it's easier for me to get a melody into FL straight away, it's quite "difficult" to click all the piano tiles slowly with your mouse and find a nice melody ^^. I thought the *Akai MPK Mini* would be a good choice?
    I just wanted to know if that would be alright from like a "beginners standpoint" :) Thanks .

    I was already looking at the Minilab mkii for my go-to portable keyboard, but this video (and my experience owning the Keystep for my hardware synths) confirms my choice. Thank you for this video! Now to see if the Keylab will be my choice for at-home production...

    Hi Patrick! I have been producing for a while but have not been able to afford a midi keyboard. I have thereofore just been using my laptop keyboard and mouse to produce. So you uploading educational videos like this means alot to me, allowing me to better understand about the different midi controllers, and hopefully make a better decision in the future when I am able to afford one. So thank you very much for the wonderful content and the chance to maybe win a keyboard.

      Adam James you don't need a midi keyboard to start producing. Most DAW's have a piano roll which you can draw the notes in the software or you can play on a virtual keyboard in which it uses your computer keyboard as the piano keys.

    I purchased the Arturia Keylab Mini MKII in January and now I got an offer from them to purchase Pigments (which is a Serum-like polychrome software synth) only for $69. At that pricepoint, I feel like I've got way more value from Arturia than I was paying for. Literally spend $169 on them and got one of the best built portable keyboard, Analog Lab Lite which I was using in several pieces of music that I made money off, and got Pigments which is so powerful that I don't want to purchase Serum anymore.
    Just want to say, arturia is a great company to invest into.

      I just picked up the Akai and I really wanna grab the Arturia still. Haven't heard a single bad thing about it and the software that comes with it too just seems unbeatable plus out of all the midi boards shown in this video I personally feel like the Keylab Mini MKII looks the cleanest.

    Thanks, Patrick!!!, I am not yet a "keyboard" player, but, I am working on learning to play guitar, an would like to someday get into more MIDI sound app;cations, and DAW editing, etc., so, perhaps this is a great way to get my toes in the water, and at least gives me a good starting point! Much appreciated!!! [=> liked, & subscribed]

    I own an MPK Mini MK2 (that my friends recommended me), I wish that I have watched this video before. The Minilab would fit my use much better. I always run out of knobs.
    Also, I think you should make a video about cheap knob controllers :)
    (for example: Behringer X-touch mini and CMD series, Akai MIDIMIX, etc. )
    These videos are great. Wish the best for the channel!

    Thank you for posting! I was thinking of jumping into GarageBand to start learning midi and music creation to go with my own video production, if only to help my editing and have musicians lay in the final track at a later point. These $100 midi control pads look great to start with. Then later move into Logic Pro X or Ableton Live if I feel my skills and interest warrant that. I was thinking of picking up the on sale now Roland TR-8 drum machine emulating the old 808 and 909 series of synths from back in the day. What sort of midi control or synth would you gravitate towards if you where using something like the Roland TR-8 with a laptop recording studio environment?

    • @PatrickBreenMusic
      @PatrickBreenMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you have a TR-8, you're going to have some great drum sounds to work with. If you're interested in a keyboard controller that comes bundled with some great synth sounds, I would check out Arturia. They have a great lineup of keyboard controllers (Mini Lab mkII, Keylab Essential, Keylab mkII) that all come with some plugin synth presets through Analog Lab. If you're looking for something small, get the mini lab. If you want something full size, you should check out the Keylab mkII, it's awesome. I have a demo & review of the Keylab on my channel, if that helps you.

    • @alexshdvideo
      @alexshdvideo 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Breen Thank you! I was already looking at Arturia KeyStep since on a blind search at Sweetwater it was one of the least expensive ones with Aftertouch. Oh and ordered the Roland TR-8 from one of the next shipments. I believe they are out of production now, leaving only the much more expensive TR-8s.. I’ll check out your other videos. Thank you.

      alexshdvideo I used to use GarageBand, and I must say, moving to Logic from that was the best choice. Being so similar, I found it easy as ever. Being an adept/professional producer, from my experience using Ableton after GarageBand IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. It’s way to confusing to manage, after all, moving onto an advanced version of GarageBand sounds sensible.

    Arturia is your best bet here. Like Patrick mentioned it comes with Ableton Live Lite, so you can start making beats right away.
    Also, it comes with the arturia analog lab VST light version, which you an upgrade for $30 to the full version, which normal price is $149. I bought this a while back to have a travel midi keyboard and it's probably the most affordable and DOPE product I've purchased as a musician. DEFINITELY WORTH IT $100 = Midi Controller, Ableton Live Lite, and Analog Lab VST.
