  • How do you restore and conserve an artifact like the X-Wing, which is made of multiple materials (both flexible and inflexible) and wasn't built with permanence in mind?       @@luckyrail23 Agree...how could splitting an Engine in half work??...and as I said...it looks wierd...especially when the wings would be in the X position...to be honest I didn't even know there was a 2 engine Variant...also...the Exhausts dont/wouldn't make sense as in both of them, there are "4"

    Just amazing i got to see this last week when i was there and what these people do so they can keep these artifacts alive for years and generations to come is so amazing!! Honored to see this and see the Space Shuttle on display at Steven Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum was just awesome!! Cant wait to see this on display hopefully next time i pass through...

    These videos are great. Thank you for the close up view of the X-wing and some of the tools and techniques used to build the large scale mockup. I hope to have an opportunity soon to view this from the gallery and the background you shared will make this a great trip.

    For something that is an iconic movie prop, the amount of detail in it is amazing. Considering how most people would probably not notice the smaller details, in the minutes it is seen on film…

    Yeah, it's amazing how much detail and no-detail props can have when used in a film. I think our brains see it for those few seconds on-screen and then "paint-in" details or textures or perfections.

      Especially when you chuck on motion blur, atmospheric effects (fog etc.) and our brains concentrating on particular areas of action.
      There are big errors films make that they can get away with, and are only spotted on rewatching.

    Their is always going to be a part of me that wishes it was an original x-wing (like red 5 for example) just simply because its more iconic but im guessing those are harder to find nowadays lol
    Either way, just preserving something like that in the first place is kind of awesome

      They pretty much don't exisit any more.
      They weren't built to last in the same way the more modern ones have been.

      Some random farmer owns the full size Red Five prop. There is footage here on TH-cam of someone looking at it rotting in the woods in the middle of nowhere.

      unfortunately there aren't any full models left. even the ones made for rogue one are only partial models meant to be filmed from certain angles. here is hoping we get a new full model to keep preserved when they make rogue squadron

    So much going on in the world that stresses us all out. For many of us our jobs are intimately wrapped around and throughout these stressors. How great would it be to go to work and get lost in a bit of real life make believe that brings back your childhood. Pretty cool.

      @@geraltofrivia323 Yeah. I've got issues writing wise with the Sequals, but the only one that got a 'meh' out of me at the end was the 3rd one. And the ships (nor the casting choices) where not in that. I'd loose my mind at the chance to look into the cockpit of that thing.

    The crazy thing is that you can look at this X wing and you know it is a prop made for a movie and the relics is paint but it looks so real and i think wow this has been through a lot.

    Isn't there a 3D former/deformer that molds sheets of metal by pinching it into complex shapes specifically useful for airplane skins and concept car bodies, and it does it in only a few hours at a fraction of the cost of doing it by milling or press molding? I reckon they could make the entire fuselage of the X-Wing in this way from 3D (laser) scans of that 1:1 scale prop.

      @@MrMrchatcity epi 4 x-wing did not have details on the back panel, and it was discarded. Epi 5 x-wing was complete. Also used in epi 6. Not sure where that one is though.

      actually the sequel era x-wing design was the original design for the x-wing back in the 70s. george loved the design but still had Ralph McQuarrie redesign it as he felt it looked to sleek and new for the rebels to have. when designing the ascetics for the sequel films the first thing Lucasfilm did was dig out old concept art and go from there. to this day most of the new star wars material is based on ralphs unused concept art

    Obviously this is "military hardware" fictional though it may be, and its been shot up and damaged by, well, taking weapons fire. Has there been any thought put into replicating scorch marks from blaster hits and other weapons damage, considering the fact that the artifact will be presented as "in universe" and not a movie prop?

      They have two at SWland in Disneyland. A standard grey and blue T-70 x-wing parked by an RZ2 a-wing, and Poe’s black and orange T-70 x-wing in the rise of the resistance pre-show queue space.

    Why are they putting an R2 unit in it? They should be putting in BB-8.

      probably because they dont have a BB unit to put into it. Lucasfilm didnt donate one for some reason

      @@exilestudios9546 You'd think though that since they're going to such extreme measures to make sure the ship is accurate they could put the word out to the local R2 clubs for someone to donate a BB unit. Even if it didn't come from Lucas, it'd still be more true to the timeline than having an R2 unit.

    I know the T 70 is supposed to be more advanced than the T 65 , but I’m bothered by the fact that the proton torpedo aperture looks Too Small , who designed that ? Is the proton torpedo 1 centimetre wide ? Doesn’t seem functional to me.
    If this feature isn’t a torpedo aperture, that should be explained.

      For what it’s worth……The incredible cross sections The Force Awakens book explains that the T-70 benefitted from advances in miniaturization of proton torpedoes and its overall weapon systems. This explains the smaller size.

    How do you conserve something that's on temporary loan, to be called back by its owner at any moment for film production?     I have been asking the exact question who -what-where -and when I do my question is what gone so I have been asking questions from the 1970's and still have been yet blocked it doesn't make sense but some of us still try and believe this can be done the engineering can't do it it's a whole different situations because person's at my age want answers because being said it can and not be done I am ready for the flight of such I am ready WTH!

      PS: Fun fact: The T-70 looks like shit compared to the T-65. Just look at the altered "X" - there is no centre to this piece of crap.
