I write for MySmartPhoneStuff and have an EEE pad. I added the keyboard today. Amazing transformation and usability. I was in the desert of Southern Cal today showing an app I just put in the market(Ride Guide) to the organizers. I had my Droid 2 running as my Hotspot and connected to EEEpad. It was flawless. Ride Guide ran perfectly using the GPS and wireless together. Because of this pad, I'm going to be able to present the app at the next major meeting for the organization. Winner, get one.
Just wanted to thank you for the great head to head comparison of these two tablets... After about a week of finally doing some real research on deciding what tablet to buy, I have chosen the Asus Eee Pad. I checked several sources when comparing over a dozen different devices and ultimately ordered the Asus Eee Pad Transformer yesterday. Your several videos; from the unpacking, review and iPad comparison provided my primary turning point. Thanks again for the great job!!! -JW Nashville, TN
My wife and I have both been Ipad fans and she owns one. When it came to my turn to get a tab I chose the Asus Transformer for price, memory card, and USB ports. It's unbelievable being able to use a USB powered harddrive on a tablet. It's also nice to have the keyboard to act as a hardened case as well as a battery extender.
I have an iPad1 & iPad2, including the HDMI adapter and a bluetooth keyboard case and tons of apps. I didn't need another tablet but wanted to get into the Android sphere. After debating Android tablets for months I finally settled on the Transformer with keyboard. This combo gives me what the iPad never did... the ability to leave my netbook at home when I travel. Even without the keyboard dock I have the advantage of onboard memory card slot and HDMI out. This is what iPad2 should have been.
@chrisjamesknapp btw... The Asus Eee Pad Transformer & the iPad 2 are pretty much tied in battery life... plus the former can even extend that by 6.5 hours when connected to the keyboard dock... other specs you seem to forget: -the Transformer's SD & microSD card slots for additional storage (while the iPad 2 leaves you in the dark unless you resort to the cloud of which 5GB are free) -the Transformer's 1 year of unlimited online storage (continued...)
From my experiance with a iPad, you have to worry about if the movie will pass through Itunes and then to the device. The Transformer, like all android devices, (if my sources are right) supports simple click and drag through windows explorer. When most reviewers talk about flash and apple products, they refer to how if you were to go to youtube on the browser, videos will not play right off the browser, it will link to the youtube app on the iPad. Android supports flash, which means (pt 1)
i have the asus with dock and thought its advantages over ipad are (at least for me): 1) with the right app, can play many movie format directly from external harddisk 2) can play some games/emulators using XBOX controller (with wireless receiver) 3) the sound are stereo and wide, even though its a bit low. 4) can connect to adhoc network. (not sure if ipad can do this, but many android tablet can't) .. that's it, i think. feel free to add if have more! :)
Great review! I appreciate you mentioning your biases as well. One thing I would like to see in a review is more of a usability comparison. For example: Do you need to own a PC as well? Can I download and play a video from Bit Torrent? Can I access a shared drive on my home network to stream a video or copy a file? Options for getting photos off my camera and onto the tablet? Can I print on ANY wireless printer and if so how? Once again - great review.
You got it totally right, just got an EEE Pad today (without the dock) for £270 from Staples (UK). Its supposed to be £350 but we got a really good deal.
The Transformer looks great, especially with the added battery life you get with the keyboard dock. They claim that these tablets can replace the laptop, but they're missing one key thing - full featured applications. Nothing comes close to full Photoshop Extended or Adobe After Effects. There are office replacements, but none of them come close to MS Office. What's the point in having a spreadsheet if you can't use your Excel macros? Tablets are great, but they are not yet ready to take over.
i have the Asus Transformer, and i have a couple of mates with ipad 2's, after showing them what the transformer can do, they both decided to sell there ipad's and buy the transformer, if nothing else just the ability to whack in loads of extra storage in the form of micro SD, SD and usb's, and play just about any file i care to throw at it, makes it worth the money, and its cheaper than even the cheapest ipad 2.
I am an apple girl and I just purchased the Asus EEE transformer plus keyboard. Waiting on the keyboard to fully charge and am excited about the personalization of the honeycomb experience. Could you please respond to the market that is available for the tablet. I couldn't quite understand what it was on the video. Thank you for your thorough evaluation/comparison.
John I used to think that you were very biased in favor of apple. But I think you did a good job on comparing the two tablets. It really comes down to personal preference.
Great head to head, I own an itouch 64g but want a tablet. Thanks for taking the time to fairly review these side by side. I'll wait for the transformer 2 for the quad core though.
Thanks for this. I recently bought the Transformer, choosing it over iPad2 and Galaxy 10.1, after seeing this head-to-head I am so glad I chose the Transformer. Factual, non-partisan comparisons like this goes a long way to letting us consumers know what choices are out there.
Great review. Thanks for the honest and unbiased look at the devices. I've been looking for good information on the Transform's advantages and disadvantages, and while I may wait for a 3G model, your comparison to the iPad 2 has convinced me that's a great, fast, and enjoyable experience.
Splendid review! Objective and highly informative, with the usual charmingly quirky delivery! One thing I've found though: There are reports of a fairly high failure rate with the Asus. I visited my local hardware store and found that the display device had just stopped working. The manager told me that two other recent sales had stopped working too, and that the Asus return codes had come through suspiciously quickly and with almost no admin queries at all...hm.
Which do you think has the best reliability? And, if something where to go wrong during the warranty period, which do you think would provide an easier repair/solution?
A great comparison. Its nice to see a detailed comparison like this since a lot of people have experiance with iPads (my university's library borrows them out). Unbiased and detailed.
This is one of the better comparisons I have found reviewing these two devices. It sounds very unbiased and does a good job describing the strengths and weaknesses of BOTH devices. Not just one or the other. Good job!
thank you for the video, I was never going to get an iPad, I just wanted to see how the original EeePad stacked up since I'm dying the next gen Transfromer 2
@airmason15 yes you can do both of those... Can you tether your phone to use its data on your tablet? Can you customize the icons? Can you change the launcher to make it look like something other than just rows and rows of apps? can you get flash player on it? Can you change your keyboard to something nicer than the one that apple makes you use? can you dock it on a keyboard, doubling the battery life and giving you two usb ports? can you put in a micro sd? nope, didn't think so.
You didn't mention anything about file handling. One of the things I hate about Ipad/Iphone is they don't give you proper access to your files that you may want to store like you can on a usb key.
I'm considering in getting a tablet for myself preferably the asus. Do you think I should still buy one or do you think that I should wait for newer tablets?
I completely agree with your assessment. There are equally appealing things about both, depending on whom you are asking and what their needs are. I personally just purchased the asus transformer infinity, and I am posting this comment on an iPad2"
Here is what you forgot to mention: The Asus Transformer come with Gmail integrated with the OS and you are able to download and view attachments like EXCEL, WORD documents, Powerpoints and PDF's right into your built-in memory. You are also able to edit the files with the built-in Polaris Office software, free included. and be able to re-attach those files. comparing iOS vs Honeycomb = my playground is in the fence in my backyard vs the world is my playground.
I own the TF101, no complaint so far. I can do anything with it I dont even need a laptop anymore! Super awesome unbreakable glass and i love the keyboard dock
the transformer has been amazing for me. I love it! I was considering an ipad2 but price did come into the equation, and since the updates I am absolutely buzzing. One of the main down falls supposedly with the transformer was the camera but since said updates takes pictures like a dream. great review thumbs up.
this video was incredible. it cleared away all my doubts about what tablet to buy. specially since i was hopping to get the now delayed toshiba tablet. but now i want the transformer. thanks for the video.
haha, I agree with you mostly except for the intangibles. The transformer clearly should of got that it has the dock, the camera, the sd card support, the usb support, the added battery life with the dock,,,etc. That was the one area you were really biased in. Transformer ftw! (:
@chrisjamesknapp Its probably because of the live wallpaper, real multitasking and the weather widget. A 0.5 second delay when rotating is really nothing to hate a device over.
I recently sold my orignal iPad to get one of these guys, the Asus. Should be in sometime this week, can't wait! It was this video that helped me to choose between the Asus and the iPad 2!
I actually have both devices TRANSFORMER 300 & IPAD 3. I like them both, but the Asus Transformer I find more useful because of its variety of functions. So I believe as an iPAD lover, you did as fair of a review as one might expect. The Transformer I have also runs the ICE CREAM SANDWICH OS.
@UATimka I still own an Ipad2(gave it to my wife), the problem is that the ipad2 is more like an over sized iphone, the Asus is more like a notebook in terms of functionality. I really don't know what you mean by cracking noises? I don't have any similar issue. I find everything is easier on the Asus, I love it that I can do stuff out of the box with it and not rely on apple's strict rules, even adding music and video is a breeze.
Nice review - I don't agree with the tie for the intangibles, because there are value add items the Transformer has that the iPad does not - who wouldn't want a microSD card slot? I'll be getting a 10" tablet, and I'm almost certain it will be a Transformer.
You are hands down the best tech reviewer.. I guess there is more you could have covered on customization on android esp for apple users who don't know about it.. Among intangibles u could even attach an external NTFS hard drive with minor tweaks to android.. I feel that is a HUGE plus.. Not something tabletty but I enjoy attaching my 2tb drive at times and watch HD movies on my bed
This review seems fair and balanced. Good job. I'm thinking about getting a tablet and I'll probably go with Android, since I like open source. But the Ipad looks really nice too.
great video but why not show the Eee pad with the live wallpaper turned off so you were comparing them running similar apps, the live wallpaper must slow down the system? but still a good review
Nice review, but OS a tie ? I value more customization, it give me more the impression that the device can "adapt" to my way at some point. Too simple interface make it easy to use at first, and it great, but when you get the hang of it and what to push it further it just don't cut it. And icon driven interface, might be good for ipod like device. But for phone and tablets that are advertise as tools, widget "desktop" like interface seem more functional too me.
Are you still happy with this AT epad? I have an iPad2 and I do not care for the limits of iTunes. Have you tried the Epad Trans. Prime yet? I am thinking of this new prime and your review. I am going to give my husband my iPad2 and get this one in the new prime version. Your review is going to be a deciding factor. I am hoping flash is a little better on the prime?
@UATimka the eee pad transformer without the keyboard dock just has 1 micro sd card slot, i have a 32gb card in mine and it plays movies and music from it perfectly, the dock has 2 x usb 2.0 and an SD card slot in it, so far all the eee pads i have seen including mine are wifi only, but you can use skype to video call, and in an upcomming android release there will be google facetime released.
Good review. I'm leaning towards Asus Transformer. Ipad does have the advantage of having a better camera if that is important to you. Not to me though.
Can't wait for the Transformer 2, nVidia Tegra 3 ftfw! Supposed to come out either in october or november. Also, I have a Toshiba Folio 100(which I broke), I put honeycomb on it and I didn't get any speed decrease when I had flash on, it also uses tegra 2.
@chrisjamesknapp (...continued) -the Transformer's usb hubs (to even further storage with external harddrives, or just use for the myriad of usb paraphernalia) -iPad 2's 0.7MP rear & 0.3MP front camera Vs. the Transformer's 5MP rear & 1.2MP front camera -iPad 2's 9.7" screen Vs. the Transformer's 10.1” screen (this comes down to personal preference) -the lack of the iPad 2's support for flash -significant price difference (an additional $120 for the iPad 2)
@TechSyncTV I used to own a 1st Gen iPhone, My dad has an iPhone 4, and I now own a Galaxy S II. I don't really see that much of a difference between the 2 OSes.You can find most of the best apps on both appstore and android market so not that much of a difference. That said, an android tablet/phone which costs the same as an apple product generally comes with much higher specs and features, which is why I prefer buying android when it comes to phones/tablets.
I''m looking to get a EEE pad transformer. Mostly because of the laptop style docking system. It would replace my Netbook nicely as well as giving me a very nice tablet.
The iPad may have a lot of accessories but most of them are redundant. That keyboard accessory is a huge deal tho. Its not equal to a Bluetooth keyboard. A Bluetooth keyboard would work for both equally. The Transformer keyboard is a dock. It essentially transforms(pun intended) the Transformer into an android netbook with the gratifying visuals and smoothness of a tablet. Trackpad, 2xUSB 2.0 ports, multi-card reader and in house battery that charges and extends the use of the Transformer? Win.
really great review! I am pretty sick of the limitations of iOS. I understand the apps will be a bit scarce, but I might take the plunge with the eee pad.
@chrisjamesknapp btw, I'm genuinely curious about how much photography work you get done on your iPad 2? I wouldn't expect you to use the aforementioned camera specs or even practically edit your photos on iPad 2 to quality standards... do you?
Hi I'm from the Philippines and I actually have an Asus Trans. It's a GREAT product, everything this guy says is true. Generally no complaints abt the os and even the battery life which this video doesn't compare!! Battery life is rated at 8 hrs, although when I use it I've been able to get 9.5 hrs. The only thing that bothers me is the music player which closes itself when you're browsing thru your music while playing a song. Maybe it's me, smething I'm doing wrong but yeah, it does that.
@cherryoo but the Asus eee pad transformer comes with a rich PowerPoint, Word and Excel file editor (Polaris Office) at no additional cost. Unlike the iPad.
John, what should I get? I like apple and want to get an iPad 2 or 3 but I want to customize my experience. I use the web browser quite a bit but I like to use apps. Not many apps but good looking and fast ones. Please help. Im not very framiliar with android so which is better?
I never used the iPad so can't draw a comparison but as someone who used the Transformer, I can say music playback on it is pretty lousy. I wish the speakers were better.
Hi John, I have a quick question for you....it might have been asked over and over again, but I could not find a proper answer on the internet. How do we close all open windows on the Asus Transformer? I'd really appreciate your response. Thanks a lot!!
@Fade2k I know what you mean ... I own the HTC MyTouch 4G (Glacier). I bought the iPad and after 2 weeks it went on eBay. Why would I own a tablet that has a more inconvenient web browsing experience than my cell phone? If I've got a 32GB Micro SD card loaded with music/movies wouldn't it be common sense to be able to swap it out with my tablet???
I have become more impressed with how the build of the Asus transformer is, though they have two different types of OS, windows and honeycomb. I wanted to know, was the one you using honeycomb, the better version of the two? That would be a good stand off.
I have an iPad2, I think I'm gonna sell it and get the prime..mainly because I hate iTunes and not being able to load flash sites. The drawbacks of the iPad2 are primarily related to what apple doesn't give you the option, as a consumer, to change or use. The price points are so close as well and with tetheringnon my phone, 4g no less, there is no need for contracts.
excellent comparison!!! I am FINALLY in the market for a tablet and looking for something android oriented. I've always been convinced that the ipad 2 was superior but since Ì prefer customizable options I'm definitely learning towards the transformer. Funny I had read so many reviews citing the Motorola Xoom as the main contender but now I've reread some articles and its falling behind. tsk tsk
The stability issue isn't because of android itself, but how the phone/tablet manufactures compiled the android operating system. They tend to release the android with instability issues. The reason the iPad, and any other device that uses iOS is so stable, is because Apple specifically designed the hardware to work with the software. I understand what you're saying though.
@bolleboos2 As far as thickness and weight goes, Transformer Prime beats the iPad 2 in both aspects. Also, why are you criticizing the Transformer for having an optional keyboard? It's like comparing an acoustic guitar to an electric/acoustic guitar which both sound exactly the same acoustically, then criticizing the electric/acoustic for having the option to plug into an amp. How does this make sense? Please tell me.
I'm looking to migrate to a tablet completely, using an external display, mouse and keyboard at work, without having to carry my laptop to work everyday .. . I need full functionality and compatibility with documents (pdf, docx etc) . . . OS: preferably windows 7 .. . Any ideas ???
Now that Flash has been disabled from the Android platform. What do you suggest for viewing older videos or live web-cams? I went with the Android systems because they were the ones that have the SD card readers and HDMI hook ups available. That is important to me.
which tablet would be better for a college student..... i basically want to be able to download my text books on the tablet and have aps that help college students with their classes
thank you, your review was very in-depth and a joy to watch, i have been apprehensive about getting a tablet. i didn't want to get an apple for no good reason, but the transformer seems to be a better option for me. thank you for giving me an in-depth enough review to make me decide :)
Great review but i feel that price should be a category too. Asus EEE Pad Transformer 16 gb-> $399.99 Tablet along or 549.98 with dock. or Asus EEE Pad Transformer 32 gb -> $499.99 Apple iPad 2 16gb -> $499.99 Seriously, even with the dock its almost cheaper to buy the transformer. For a fairly even product to have that big of a price difference its no contest.
2 of the main reasons i bought the eee pad is not even mentioned in this review and thats Asus MyCloud, you can store as many files as you like on Asus's servers (securely) and also Slashtop which i use to remotely use my computer at home while i'm at my girlfriends for the weekend, and its fast enough to even stream films from my computer 15miles away :)
Nice vid dude, I've been looking at switching to android lately, getting fed up with Apple's restrictiveness, the Eee pad looks like the better option in my opinion.
I gave this tablet to my wife (with the dock). She says it was the best birthday present she ever got. I've messed around with it and the tablet is indeed superb :). The android Honeycomb is awesome!
I got a question. I can't choose between the iPad and Eeepad and I don't know what to do. If I buy the iPad 2 I really do it for the apps and Facetime. If I buy the Eeepad I buy it because it's a bit better. So Help me out please. iPad 2 with facetime and apps or EeePad?
Great review, It's nice to see an apple user who will compare their products against competition's fairly. I do think the price difference for what you get is a pretty important factor btw these 2 devices that makes the transformer a much more solid win. Yes, both tablets are top notch and solid performers, but spending less to get a bit more is always the win for me.
I write for MySmartPhoneStuff and have an EEE pad. I added the keyboard today. Amazing transformation and usability. Not a fanboy or anything but does the iPad still win when it comes to games over the transformer?
@raycharlez transformer. My friend has an ipad2 and after a week, he admitted it was useless
Great face off John, I have just purchased a transformer and its great, what's the live wallpaper called that is shown in the vid?
Nice review - I don't agree with the tie for the intangibles, because there are value add items the Transformer has that the iPad does not - who wouldn't want a microSD card slot? I'll be getting a 10" tablet, and I'm almost certain it will be a Transformer.
We need iPad2 versus Transformer Prime comparison. Thanks and keep the great work up!
I felt like you didn't emphasize the importants of the USB port on the transformer and the ability to handle files like you would on a laptop
Great video. I just bought the transformer today. I recieve it next week.
You yourself just said the transformer has the edge over the ipad 2. So how can the ipad be better?
@UATimka the eee pad transformer without the keyboard dock just has 1 micro sd card slot, i have a 32gb card in mine and it plays movies and music from it perfectly, the dock has 2 x usb 2.0 and an SD card slot in it, so far all the eee pads i have seen including mine are wifi only, but you can use skype to video call, and in an upcomming android release there will be google facetime released.
Greetings from Sweden. Really good review! Just what i needed to decide which tab to buy.
Keep up the good job!
Great comparison- it's nice to see both the iPad 2 and the Transformer getting their dues. I like you fairly neutral approach too.
@chrisjamesknapp
(...continued)
-the Transformer's usb hubs (to even further storage with external harddrives, or just use for the myriad of usb paraphernalia)
-iPad 2's 0.7MP rear & 0.3MP front camera Vs. the Transformer's 5MP rear & 1.2MP front camera
-iPad 2's 9.7" screen Vs. the Transformer's 10.1” screen (this comes down to personal preference)
-the lack of the iPad 2's support for flash
-significant price difference (an additional $120 for the iPad 2)
@chrisjamesknapp
btw, I'm genuinely curious about how much photography work you get done on your iPad 2? I wouldn't expect you to use the aforementioned camera specs or even practically edit your photos on iPad 2 to quality standards... do you?
thanks dude i was going to get the i pad 2. but now with you and my friend convincing me to get the asus transformer.
I got it yesterday and it's a beauty. I recommend it to anyone! get the dock keyboard as well. it's no different than a netbook!
got the transformer with dock and love it. flash, hdmi, 2 usb ports,...
@Fade2k I know what you mean ... I own the HTC MyTouch 4G (Glacier). I bought the iPad and after 2 weeks it went on eBay. Why would I own a tablet that has a more inconvenient web browsing experience than my cell phone? If I've got a 32GB Micro SD card loaded with music/movies wouldn't it be common sense to be able to swap it out with my tablet???
would the transformer be better for a university student? having trouble deciding which of these two to purchase. any advice?
I'm sold. I buying the Asus Eee Transformer for my self for fathers day. This video has me sold on the Transformer. Thanks for the unbiased review.
As soon as it gets tegra 3 quad core and 3 G I will definitely be a must have
I don't worry about the Market place because it is definitely improving
@tanysozi iPad 2 is 599, Transformer Prime is 599, the Transformer is 399
Now that Flash has been disabled from the Android platform. What do you suggest for viewing older videos or live web-cams?
I went with the Android systems because they were the ones that have the SD card readers and HDMI hook ups available. That is important to me.
which tablet would be better for a college student..... i basically want to be able to download my text books on the tablet and have aps that help college students with their classes
thank you, your review was very in-depth and a joy to watch, i have been apprehensive about getting a tablet. i didn't want to get an apple for no good reason, but the transformer seems to be a better option for me. thank you for giving me an in-depth enough review to make me decide
:)
this was a wonderfull review
you hit on all kinds of subjects, well done.
Such an honest, clear and informative comparison. Excellent.
Great review but i feel that price should be a category too.
Asus EEE Pad Transformer 16 gb-> $399.99 Tablet along or 549.98 with dock.
or Asus EEE Pad Transformer 32 gb -> $499.99
Apple iPad 2 16gb -> $499.99
Seriously, even with the dock its almost cheaper to buy the transformer.
For the Transformer, is it compatible with a 10-key add-on accessory? Like USB to the keyboard accessory?
So Help me out please. iPad 2 with facetime and apps or EeePad?
nice review.
When he drags the icon on the Asus, it was really laggy, and he said it was responsive =/
Please help me! U said: '''Take a look at the EeePad'' but I'm not sure now. What would you do iPad 2 or EeePad?
Thanks! ;-)
u forgot to mention that you can overclock the asus if you root it......the overclocking can go up to 1.6ghz
