That's a nice little bench! Good job Sarah. I built an exact copy of Will Myers Moravian workbench and it is nice to see others working with their hands. Now Sarah knows what it takes to build a proper woodworking bench.
I am so glad that I watched this segment today. Because I am about to mount my Vise to newly and the first bench I have made. Thanks millions from California. Special thanks to your student wife, NEVER L8.
Of all the videos of yourself, Rex, et-al, I finally get a look at one of those smaller rounded mallets in use. Looks really comfortable for close in work, Thanks Sara! Also brace use with your head on the handle reminds me of keg inspired whiffle-ball games. Y'all work good together. God bless you and your family.
Great Build....Congratulations to your wife for building this bench and getting into the wood shop. I wish I could talk my wife into helping me in the shop but her only contribution is telling me not to bring dust into the house.....I really enjoyed this video....!!!
James, I love all of your videos but I do believe this one has to be my absolute favorite. You are a very fortunate man to have such a beautiful and wonderful wife that was willing to do this project and spend that much time in the shop with you 😂 Thank you for sharing this condensed version. 👏👏👏❤️
What I appreciate is that she stayed committed to hand tools only. It would've been so easy for her to say "Can I just use a friggin' cordless drill?" at some points--I've been there!--but she stuck with it. She has the right mindset!
Been trying to figure just want I want, Love your bench and I might build it and have 2 or 3 different lengths of detachable legs for we sometimes need of different working height. Yes great teaching and most of what I need for a useful Thanks
Great job Sarah! You two made me laugh and I was happy to see some of the challenges that really go on for beginner’s. Oh yeah, did you ever get the hang of the planner?
The bench turned out almost as beautiful as Ms. Sarah herself. Fine piece of work my lady. I love y'all's playfulness together too. It is great to see a couple with your time together that still has that spark. I think it may have been asked before, but what is the way to estimate the average height for such a work bench? Would I want it at elbow, mid forearm, or about wrist height with my arm hanging loose (for a good planing height without making my back hurt) then how much lift would I want for a small bench top bench for joinery cutting while standing? I am about 5'8 1/2" tall with a longer upper body and shorter legs (29" inseam). Thanks
A lot of different woodworking gurus will tell you different things that make the best bench height. The honest truth is that there is no best bench height. It is a completely personal preference. Most old school hand tool woodworkers prefer the bench to be a bit higher and most hybrid woodworkers like the bench to be a bit lower. And there's a lot of different reasons for that but there are a lot of in between. My most common suggestion is grab a board and a plane and go around the house put them on different things at different heights and see how it feels. Then make the bench one inch higher than that. Nice thing is you can always cut it down and if you want to see what a shorter bench would feel like put a couple boards on the floor and stand on them while planning. And then just cut that much off the bench if you like it.
Very nice job on your bench Sarah. I hope you plan on charging James cold hard cash to take your bench to shows (lol). You will get a lot of years out of this bench. Now, time to go tool shopping over in James' area. Take care both of you and have a great week ahead.
great job Sarah, question is there a video on that saw bench I loved it , may be I will remodify the Rex plan and have that one that points in and out on both ends and love the space in between, for potential sawing in the middle I assume!! is that a Bacho saw?
Here is the video on making it. th-cam.com/video/wP2YYKIxJ90/w-d-xo.html I am not sure which saw you were asking about sorry. do you have a time stamp for which one?
Awesome see job!! Yeah ummm! She’s putting the rest of us to shame!! Good awesome job maam!!! This is the one I’ve been putting off making. Bought the dvd and everything. Thanks for the inspiration!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂yall are so silly and cute! I love it!!!!
Don’t get me wrong I am not criticising your wife just the teacher, when I first started using a saw (I think they had just been invented) I was having difficulty cutting to a straight line, my teacher explained that I should hole my forefinger along the saw and grip the saw with the other three fingers. As soon as I mastered that, I improved a lot, not as much as he wanted me too but an improvement anyway.
So now she has a groovy Moravian, but how does she find it? Is it as good as your normal bench or is there a compromise somewhere for knock-down-ability? Ie would you make this your permanent work bench?
If you are going to have the bench in one place I would not make this. This is as good as it gets for a bench that will be moved. But it is not as solid as a permanent one
He hasn't had much time to get into the shop. She's started a couple projects but we haven't had the time to finish them. We will see what the new shop holds.
Did you just get packaged hard wood Made for floors so it would be in much better shape and not warped?I tried to go to home depot tand I could just not purchase the wood. It was too terrible same as lowe's but I can't find where to get it for wood for my work bench
Check out www.lumberfinder.net most of the time at the big box stores you're not going to find decent lumber. Menards here carries okay stuff but it all comes wrapped and it's a bit more expensive. I usually only buy from there when it's a last minute purchase or I'm showing using stuff from the big box stores.
If you have good tools, you will do well, and if you have bad ones, you will not even do badly. In my opinion, the saying of English woodworkers. You have very good hand tools.
they can be just about any place you want them. when we laid these ones out we just eyeballed their location. as long as they do not run into the other stretchers you are good.
If you want taller you just make the legs a few inches longer to whatever heights you want. Usually I tell people make it a good bit longer than you want it to be and then you can always cut the legs down to a height that fits you in the future. You can put some lumber on the ground to see what a shorter bench would feel like. But I have plans to my bench which is on the higher side. www.woodbywright.com/shop/workbench
You want to get the screws as close to the middle of the chop as possible. And recessing it 3/4-in allowed us to put them pretty close to the middle. I would like to go a little farther in but that's good enough. If the screws are too far down then there's a lot of twist on the jaw when you clamp something just at the top.
Puede encontrar maderas de losas en su país, pero son más difíciles de encontrar y son más caros. También, una sola pieza no siempre es mejor que una laminada. Mi Español no es muy bueno, así que lo siento si es incorrecto.
Watching her unwrap that Big Box lumber im doing a countdown in my head before it warps to banana mode 😅buy kiln dried from your local stores. Its cheaper and less likely to warp twist or crack on you! @kandjlumber
The only thing sharper than the tools is your Missus' wit. You two have an awesome dynamic. Thanks for the all in one video.
I think I am going to put that on a t-shirt. 😉

This is my favorite of all of your videos! Reminds me of Angie and Myself restoring our little vintage camper together ❤❤
Even though I dont really do projects of wood, hand saws just feel great to use, feels natural.

That yellow self-turning bit and brace is pretty funny looking.
I loved the Ghost moment at the bit brace.
Very nice bench. I'm ashamed to admit I bought mine, but now I'm inspired.

Congrats!!!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
This is awesome on so many levels. For one, she didn't kill you. Two, it's time well spent with your wife. Nice job, you guys.
Very nice work Sarah even with James slacking off lol
Congrats for your bench, Sarah! Have a lot of fun with it! 📐🔨
Excellent work and not a power tool in sight.

Sahara, for your next project may I suggest you make a mop and broom stand for James!
Wow, I can feel the accomplishment you both took on putting this together. Thank you for sharing this experience.
She's so cute! Awesome job. I wish I had that bench.

Nice patience! And the bench wasn't bad either 😛 Just messing that was a great video and awesome bench. Stellar work Sarah. Jealous now...
Great bench Sarah! Congratulations! Now we want to see your projects!
Dang, this is an awesome video. Great work guys 😮
What kind of wood are the shelf boards made of?
The stretchers are red oak. The legs and top are poplar.
Great job Sarah!
Congrats Sarah one fine job.

I have to know, has Sarah had an opportunity to use that delightful bench, or was it immediately commandeered as available flat space.
He hasn't had much time to get into the shop. She's started a couple projects but we haven't had the time to finish them. We will see what the new shop holds.

@@WoodByWright thank you :)
👍🏼 for the Wicked reference, Sarah
How much did it end up costing at the end?
It was 80 in lumber and 50 for the vice
Let’s go Sarah nice bench
Interesting entertaining and funny to watch 😉✌🏼
Do you have the plans for this taller bench in this video rather than the 2’7” version on your website by chance?

James we have a new driving alert here in Pa. If you here clip clop clip clop bang bang clip clop duck it's another Amish drive bye
Nice couple, nice bench
What brand bits were you using in this video for the brace? The dark ones?
Those are wood owl bits. These ones lddy.no/oxa7 I have a few videos on them and why I use them. For some braces. You need an adapter though.
Stellar job !!!
Well done
James, I curious why you recessed the vise?
You want to get the screws as close to the middle of the chop as possible. And recessing it 3/4-in allowed us to put them pretty close to the middle. Looks beautiful you should be proud
Bella señora 💐💐💐
Very lovely
Good job Sarah, although watching you flatten the bench made me feel guilty. I've been going to do mine for months. Regards Jim UK.
Did it take you nine and a half weeks to build that thing? :P
More like 9 months 🤪
Now you just need to put in a tool well
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

That can't be her bench, it's not covered with all of James' tools and stuff !!! I'm calling shenanigans !!!

Very good workbench! It seemed to me that your wife lost weight while working on this project.
Who can blame her? For throwing something
So you say you can just go to a hardware store and grab some hardwood from a shelf? Just like that? Jesus, only pine and sproose here, where i live :(
Most of the big box stores sell Red oak, maple and Poplar. even the construction yards sell poplar. where do you live?
@@WoodByWright Poland :D Plenty of oak, ash, and other hard wood grows here, but you only see low quality construction lumber on shelves :(
a japanese pull saw would really helps, it does not demand huge arm strength

I usually do but unfortunately this was a last minute project. I have several good sawyer friends that normally keep me well stocked.
