I'm Australian, an engineer and a Dr whose career is in surgery. I'm about to commence relocation of my workshop to a larger space where I can have a cabinet saw. I think every reduction in risk is worth assessing and for that reason I would choose sawstop if it is doable. Sure I can use blade guard and all of the appropriate techniques... yet there is still risk. My hands in full are not worth the saving of a cheaper but equivalent saw . Think about what is acceptable to you with respect to that, as well as each of the functional categories and qualitative aspects of build quality, parts availability and service/support. If you are not purchasing sawstop, there may be no technical advantage in a new saw... in which case don't rule out a used model that may be superior for your budget :).

I think being forced to take your time, because of costs, helps you not rush which creates way less mistakes. You did an amazing job my friend. 👊🏼
Nice job. It took me 2 years to build my workbench, although I did stop and start a few times due to other projects. But its s job worth doing right and well for your dream bench. It will serve you well for many years and will inspire you every time you use it. Well done
Beautiful workbench! I built my own dust collection system with 6 inch plastic sewer pipe. I bought a 2hp, 220v blower from Penn State Industries and a 6 inch Dust Deputy XL. I don’t need a filter because I can blow the exhaust outside. I bought a remote control contactor switch on Amazon. It all works great. Thanks for a great video.
Recently unsubbed from a couple of woodwork YTers because their content started to veer towards being mostly advertising and shilling for products rather than woodworking. Now I find you and this is the good stuff, definitely subbing.
I am in the last 25% of building this same workbench. It has been one of the more interesting journeys I've been on. The sheer weight was always a consideration, and a jointer would have been nice. I am looking forward to the completion and moving on to new journeys, but not until this one is finished to my satisfaction. Yours is beautiful and will serve you well. Not compromising on the quality was the correct decision. You will look forward to using it and just that will make your future projects that much better. Congratulations.
Thank you! I know exactly what you mean, by the end of the project I was so ready to be done and start something new, but I know the best woodworkers are patient, so I always try my best at the end to keep my patience and finish it right! I’m sure yours is gonna turn out great!
Great build and nicely done on the video too. As far as new tools go, for a table saw I have to recommend Sawstop. Mine is very well made and the manual and support are excellent too. And like every other woodworker ever, I thought nothing bad in the shop would ever really happen to me. But one day I was reaching with my left hand to pull an off-cut through, and the back of the blade came up and got my left index finger. It was pretty scary and I had to get a few stitches in the ER, but the SS safety mechanism worked perfectly and my finger is still attached and is just fine. If not for the safety feature, I would have lost half that finger. Trust me, it only takes one instant of distraction or getting too close, so please invest in your safety! Good luck and all the best.
Bravo my friend. You built a hell of a work bench/table...and don't even give the little indent any thought, we expect to see MANY more over the course of it's life. I've been a big fan of woodworking TH-cam channels and I think your quality and dedication is going to take you places..and I'm here for all of it!
They just keep getting better well done , beautiful bench! And to anyone wondering whether the patreon is worth a try take it from myself it definitely is! Keep up the good work brother 🔥👊🏾
you my guy are gonna be the next big thing in woodworking youtube. Great cinematics. I really like the new jointer that type of bades are way better cause you dont have to change the whole blade like the other ones. keep it up
3:35 - just fyi don’t lift the jointer by the “table surface” - you end it out of true/add warp. There’s normally lifting points or if it’s a thicknesses too - put some 4x2 through and lift with those.
As good as the craftsmanship is, your score and cinematography are what kept me glued for the entire 40 minutes. Your video is as much a masterpiece as the table.
If I didn't watch the video of you making the bench I would have thought it was store bought, it's that good! Job well done sir, you have a gift. I'm a DeWalt guy myself, but I really want a Saw Stop. That's my end goal as far as table saws go that is. I am a woodworker myself and I hope to be on TH-cam and other platforms one day, hopefully soon. One of my problems, as I'm sure it is for many others is money. I have amassed a good start on tools but I need a few more to have what I need as well as upgrading a few of what I already have. I wish you the best and look forward to seeing what else you do. Stay safe and Happy Building 💯😁
I used dust tube and piping from powertec, they were really good and much cheaper than other offerings. I have a harbor freight dust collector for like a cnc attached and it works well for my small shop.
Try this for the hammer ding. Damp a cloth and use an iron and press over the mark. It should help to raise the grain, good luck. Enjoy the channel and the use of music. Thanks
So, I came across this video and after 20 or so seconds -- I subbed. Went on to watch all of your videos. I have watched thousands of hours of you tube and can say your videography is as good as I've seen. I really enjoy your narration, sense of humor, and your philosophy on woodworking. Keep up the hard work, the channel will take off. I wish I could get my name on the crosscut sled, but it's not feasible at this time. Also, I apologize for laughing when you got your finger while pounding in that bow tie!
Excellent build, Top quality, attention to detail and great editing! This video deserves MANY more subscribers and I am sure they will come so it is exciting to be here so early!
@@LateNightWoodworking Keep up the great work and I am certain it will prove to be the case! I could hardly believe it when you said you hoped to get to 10k subs!
Beautiful work and great video. To all the big names in TH-cam, this is how you build a quality audience, just interesting quality work, no begging for likes, no click bait, no stupid thumb nails. Well done. Re your question about tools, personally in a very similar size shop and situation, I never regretted my purchase of a quality bandsaw, before getting a table saw. You already have a miter saw and track saw and honestly, they will do most of the work, safer than the table saw will. Controversial opinion, but it's mine ;).
BROOOO!!!! This looks AMAZING!!!!! You definitely found the vices you were looking for from last time! Your videos are definitely evolving into a flavor, and I dig it. I really enjoy the lo-fi vibe, the fun edits of the mundane processes, the new jointer's setup, and the shop noises. You're telling your story, and I'm definitely enjoying every second of it. These "hobbies," as some people might call them, are not cheap or easy. Videography and Woodworking at the same time are massive undertakings, and I really dig how it's going for you! 10k is a lofty goal, but I know that you can do it as long as you keep doing your best 😁 I recommend a SawStop table saw, I know they're pricey... but that safety feature... woof. I'm super clumsy and I love playing games, so I want to keep my fingers very safe and I spare no expense to do so! Being a golfer, I'm assuming you have a similar affliction and love of your fingers 😆
Hahah I definitely found the vices. But I really appreciate the kind words. It’s comments like these that give me more motivation to keep working hard! I’m definitely leaning towards a SawStop, I also like my fingers connected to my hands lol 😂
Table saw rec: Harvey HW110S 4HP dovetail saw. Picked one up a few months back and haven’t regretted it for a second. More importantly, the bench is gorgeous, and the production quality of the video alone was enough for me to subscribe. You should be incredibly proud of this work. Cheers!
I enjoyed watching for over 20 mins and no ask for subscribe, but mentioned the Patreon if people want to go the extra mile. The video speaks for itself and the audio was great! Made a subscriber out of me without having to ask!
You got yourself at least 1 new subscriber! :) Although it cost quite a bit, it will last a lifetime and more. You made a beautiful thing that you can be proud of every time you walk into the shop.
Good morning 🌅, It looks like a very nice bench, it might be a good idea to get 2 parallel side fences for your router, this way you hold the router in place in a particular setting you require it without it moving, even to the point if you want a hole in the centre of a piece of timber all you need to do is turn the router around and the settings should be the same. You might just have to adjust it slightly., to make it equal, Test piece first, It would be a good idea to wear some eye protection and a face mask, And ear protectors, Good luck on your journey,
yeah that's actually a great idea, I always wear eye protection and ear protection! normally wear a breathing mask too, just sometimes I don't. Thank you!!
I saw you had some trouble with the tenon dry fit up, one trick I use is to round/chamfer the tenon edges with sandpaper or chisel to help with easier fitting and assembly. Its looks great worth the sub.
@ I’ve been trying to convince them the same! I am ready to purchase one, but want to wait for a deal. The power, the footprint, and the variety of machine ports makes this a great machine.
Sir, your work is exceptional! Not just the woodworking, but the filmmaking and direction, great shots, beautiful tone, perfect audio mix (except for your vocals at the end). I’ve watched Blacktail since it started and although your style is uniquely different, I am certain you will be just as successful in your own right!
Good design. It does hurt when you have the first gouge. An iron and a damp rag will lessen the hurt. The tip of my panel saw dipped into my top when I was slicing a board through the middle. Recommendations I have are a dead man, some holdfasts (be careful, some will not hold in thicker wood over 3 inches), and like you said, dust collection. I bought a Jet Vortex Cone that was rated for my SawStop. The plastic bag cannot take the pressure from the 735 planer, but double bagging does work to keep the plastic bags intact. A last recommendation is to make a Moxon vise. I made the one from Woodsmith, Vol. 43/No. 256 that also has a small workbench attached. This sits on top of your new bench and brings the wood up higher for making easier dovetails and other small work. I added a few inches to the working width to fit wider blanket chest boards. Rob Cosman has a smaller one without a small bench.
I saw pedulla studio put a moxon vise on his but I didn’t want to spend anymore money 😂 but thank you for the recommendations I’ll definitely consider them
…and by the way, I LOVE my 3HP SawStop PCS! Totally worth the money! I’m looking at the Oneida system that bourbon moth just out in his small shop. Expensive but looks like the one I want.
This is amazing, I love the filming and editing of this, you deserve way more subs. You are so underrated. Which scares me cuz I want to start making wood working you tube videos and I don’t even know how to edit at all yet lol
Really beautiful bench man you should be proud. You’ll love it. For the new tools I would def say Oneida for dust collector and have to go with Sawstop for the saw. I have the Contractor saw with cast iron extension wings and I love it. You can see it in action on any of my videos. Subbed!
What tools? Table saw? Delta Unisaw. Left or right tilt doesn't matter. If you want to restore one, they can be had to cheap. If you want buy new or lightly used, you'll pay $700-$1200 on average. For the newer models (early 2000s and onward) I see them for $1500-$3500. That being said, Harvey and SawStop have the best dust collection built into the saw as is. Older saws were never designed with such things in mind, it seems (restoring an old Unisaw currently and working through those challenges currently). It's fun though.
Sounds fun! But I think I’m leaning towards getting a newer one. I already have a 10” delta saw from the 70’s! Ready for something a little newer and safer
Split to Rubio is a good choice. Nice bench. Seems like you did a really nice job making a pile of wood into art that will assist you in making more art. It’s wonderful craft.
@@LateNightWoodworking what a shame to watch you lift the poor thing by its tables. the alignment and coplanar-ness of those tables is the whole point of the machine
Great video, man. Just found your channel and hit the subscribe button. Like you, I’m trying to hit 10K too. I’m a little behind you at just over 3. But hey, every little bit counts. And I love the cinematic style of the videos too. Even a little Wes Anderson flare in there, in my opinion. Love it.
I like your music selections! You need a wireless mic when you're talking to camera though, TH-cam viewers can put up with a lot, but bad audio is the cardinal sin you can never commit. ❤️
Hey man, Love your channel and work. Gotta say I have a contractor sawstop and I love it. Get the 36in t-glide fence as it comes with the nice, super accurate fence. Takes up a bit more space but is well worth it. I should note it works best on a 20 amp breaker. Best of luck.
Awesome work/content as usual!!!! 🤯🙏🏽❤️ You’ll be at 10k before you know it!!!! I would say a SawStop Contractor Version 30” inch fence, either a Grizzly Bandsaw or a Jet Bandsaw! I could list more tools, but I would say focus on what you need the most first and then go from there!
Tools? Saw Stop, I own a delta and I like mine, but just one slip up and the Saw Stop just paid for itself, losing a finger is probably quite painful and expensive... They're also well built and I've never heard anybody say they regretted buying one. As far as dust collection, I really don't know about that one... I guess it all depends on what you need and what's on sale.
Rockler is having a big sale right now… 👀 agreed though about losing fingers. I just can’t afford one atm… A sawstop that is… But I also can’t afford to lose a finger lol
The hammer felt like a splinter when in between my nail of my pointer finger. I'm sure some of you know that feeling. Now the bench is a master pice no questions about it. I'm sure you will never regret the work and money you spend. Good job.
That's an amazing bench. You should be proud of that, dude. I don't know what's more impressive - that you committed to and executed this so well, or actually refinished a hardwood floor by yourself to finance it. Floor jobs are just brutal. Love the end scene - would 100% do the same damn s**t myself. Love the pop-up dogs - I assume those are 'affordable' push-to-open thingys. You asked: Get a SawStop, and get the 'big' one for the future. I have a Powermatic 62B, which I love and use, but hindsight being 20/20, I'd go with SawStop. Source: my mangled left pinky urgently urges you to consider this. Seriously - it's not 'if,' it's actually 'when.' Question: are the two split-top components held to the base by gravity alone? Seems like they are.
Thank you man I really appreciate it. Yes, they are just the push to open thingys haha. I will take your mangled pinky’s word, I think I’ll end up going with a sawstop. Currently the top isn’t glued in but they are connected using a 1.5”x1.5” block, basically just a giant dry domino
@@LateNightWoodworking Thanks! Don't glue that top. You'll someday have a bigger shop and breaking that beast down will make it easier to move. In the meantime, it's not going anywhere.
If you're near PA, I know someone who has a sawstop industrial saw and oneida dust collector. He was thinking of selling and hadn't put it on the marketplace yet.
Take your time! Don't rush. 10k will come. 20k will come. 100k will come. TH-cam is all about the long, consistent game. Keep up with your fantastic style of content and cinematography! Do it at a pace where you feel you still are having fun. Otherwise you'll just burn out. Take it from a 41 yo man, still recovering from a burnout.
I love it! Haha I died at the very end with the hammer! But in the end it will get used but that doesn't mean it can look god damn pretty! you can be proud on yourself, enjoy it^^
Man, I was gonna subscribe because I dig your style and big props for being local. But your spiel about wanting 10k got the sub. Love your videos man, can’t wait to see what else you do.
Superb video! You’ll hit your subscriber mark no issues I’m sure. The drill bit (leg vice) choked up because that wee spiral thread at the tip pulls the bit into the wood. Happens to me all the time. Slower speed or grind it off 😉 Thank you for sharing your amazing work 👌❤️
I sure hope you’re right! I ended up returning that bit. I probably need a more powerful drill too, but eventually I want to get the wood owl ones, just haven’t looked into it enough
Great bench and video as usual!! Always entertaining and great work!! As far as saws go, I sell SawStops. They are great saws but if I was buying one, I would look at Harvey. Doesn’t have the brake in it, but quality and pricing is definitely there. They also have one of the best and most consistent fences on the market!! Izzy Swan just did a great review on his today…

This earned a thumb/sub. All-round great video, sound, artistry, humor...I'm already looking forward to watching another one.
I know all about the late night thing. I've worked nights for 10+ years. It seems like I'm always the most motivated late at night. Bench looks great!
I'm glad somebody else gets it!!!
First Time seeing you're videos i love watching people go from.
A very small woodworking channel to a big and I feel eventually you'll Get there.
Thank you! I do really like my small shop but eventually it would be fun to have a bigger shop!
That was really fun to watch. Beautiful bench!
Thank you so much! I got a lot of inspiration from your workbench build!! Hope your ankle healed well!
you my guy are gonna be the next big thing in woodworking youtube. Great cinematics. I really like the new jointer that type of bades are way better cause you dont have to change the whole blade like the other ones. keep it up
Wow thank you I hope so, that would be pretty fun
3:35 - just fyi don’t lift the jointer by the “table surface” - you end it out of true/add warp. There’s normally lifting points or if it’s a thicknesses too - put some 4x2 through and lift with those.
Noted!
Great work otherwise - I enjoyed your video alot
As good as the craftsmanship is, your score and cinematography are what kept me glued for the entire 40 minutes.
Your video is as much a masterpiece as the table.
Wow thank you!! 😊 I’m glad you watched the whole thing! Appreciate the kind words
Nicely done! I'm sure you'll be eyeing it when you walk in your shop for a while, like: "Yeaaaaaaa I built that!" Keep it up!
Hahahahha I already have been doing that 😂😂
If I didn't watch the video of you making the bench I would have thought it was store bought, it's that good!
Thank you! I wish you luck with your future channel!!
@LateNightWoodworking thank you, I wish you luck as well. Keep building 💯😁
Thanks
Thanks for the tip! And glad you enjoyed the video!
Hahaha that’s okay for some reason it’s funny when I get hurt. But thank you I really do appreciate the nice comment! Glad to have you subbed!!! :)
Excellent build, Top quality, attention to detail and great editing! This video deserves MANY more subscribers and I am sure they will come so it is exciting to be here so early!
Thank you so much! I hope you are very early in the long run! :)
@@LateNightWoodworking Keep up the great work and I am certain it will prove to be the case! I could hardly believe it when you said you hoped to get to 10k subs!
One of the best to do it! Love seeing it all come together
❤️
You absolutely crushed it! Fantastic job! The hammer hurt my heart - maybe wooden mallet next time? Lolol
Trust me… I felt sick to my stomach doing that. Yeah maybe a wooden mallet lol 😅
Great project, it earned you a membership on Patreon. Keep going!
Thank you so much!!!! Can’t wait to add your name to the sled!
Thank you! I do actually already have a table saw, but it’s just so old. I like the idea of having a bandsaw though.
10k is a lofty goal, but I know that you can do it as long as you keep doing your best 😁
I recommend a SawStop table saw, I know they're pricey... but that safety feature...
Cheers!
thank you sir!! I really do appreciate the kind words.
Nailed it bro. Well done.
Thank you kind sir! :)
Well thought out and executed. It was a pleasure to watch.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
That Seattle skyline detail is really nice.
thank you doug!
I enjoyed watching for over 20 mins and no ask for subscribe, but mentioned the Patreon if people want to go the extra mile. The video speaks for itself and the audio was great! Made a subscriber out of me without having to ask!
I appreciate that!!! I’m glad to have you around! :)
you did a good job o your video and i enjoyed it keep up the good work
Table is amazing man good work and I’m now subscribed!
Awesome! Thank you! appreciate it!! :)
Incredible build brother!
Appreciate that!!! 😊
You got yourself at least 1 new subscriber! :) Although it cost quite a bit, it will last a lifetime and more. You made a beautiful thing that you can be proud of every time you walk into the shop.
Thank you! Happy to have you here! I’m glad you like it and I totally agree!
Great buid, really love de inaguration hit, it means a lot
It was so freeing
Thank you!!
Super sick build!! You killed this one.
Thank you!!! ☺️
I saw you had some trouble with the tenon dry fit up, one trick I use is to round/chamfer the tenon edges with sandpaper or chisel to help with easier fitting and assembly. Its looks great worth the sub.
I actually did end up doing that! But I think at that point they were just too tight
You should look at the Oneida Supercell dust collector. It would be great for your space
Maybe Oneida will look into Late Night Woodworking and think “the is the perfect shop for the supercell dust collector” 😂
Wow thank you so much! I hope you’re right! 🤞🏻
He says “small shop” it’s still pretty big lol 😂
@ I know, right! Hahaha.
Great work! Greetings from Germany (Cologne). You have a new subscriber 👍
Awesome!! Welcome, and greetings from America!
This is amazing, I love the filming and editing of this, you deserve way more subs. You are so underrated. Which scares me cuz I want to start making wood working you tube videos and I don’t even know how to edit at all yet lol
You don’t need to make videos like I do, they will probably get more views if you don’t lol
@ ya I’ll find my own style of editing
Fantastic Job! You have my subscription!
Thanks!!! Happy to have you!
That’s one hell of a bench I am jealous of your skills, remember slow is smooth and smooth is fast!!
Well thank you!! You are so right
Really beautiful bench man you should be proud. You’ll love it. For the new tools I would def say Oneida for dust collector and have to go with Sawstop for the saw. I have the Contractor saw with cast iron extension wings and I love it. You can see it in action on any of my videos. Subbed!
I’ll have to check it out!! I have to admit, those are probably the two options that I’m considering the most!
Great bench! I totally get the hammer track. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching it!!
What tools?
It’s a never ending road of art lol thank you!
Beautiful work. Well done
Thank you so much 😀
One word. Masterpiece.
Wow…. Appreciate it! :)
@@LateNightWoodworking oh and I forgot about the music 😅👌as always.
Die Workbench sieht echt richtig Klasse aus. Du kannst Pedulla Studio Konkurrenz machen. KLASSE!!!
Wow!! Thank you that is quite the complement!! 😊
$1,000 for that jointer? With a helical cutter head? What a steal!
I thought so too!
@@LateNightWoodworking what a shame to watch you lift the poor thing by its tables. the alignment and coplanar-ness of those tables is the whole point of the machine
@jdawkins111 at least they didn't drop it. Judging by the joinery in his bench build, I'd wager it's adjusted and coplanar.
@@alancook1380 I tried my best! I think it is still okay!
@@jdawkins111 I spent a lot of time retuning it and while it's not perfect, I think it's pretty good, hopefully i didnt mess anything up!
You didn’t just try, you did build the ultimate workbench.. So beautiful, I can’t believe you took a hammer to it. Ouch.
😬
Look at Harvey on the 10" table saw. They have good dust collection system also but not cheap.
A lot of people mentioning Harvey!
Love it.
Thanks for the sub and the nice words!! I wish you luck on your 10k journey as well!!!
amazing bench,nice video
now lets beat it ;)
Thank you!!
Pro level.
❤️
I like your music selections! You need a wireless mic when you're talking to camera though, TH-cam viewers can put up with a lot, but bad audio is the cardinal sin you can never commit. ❤️
It’s not bad!
Thank you!! I will definitely look into that saw!
Thank you so much! I’m hearing a lot of sawstop from commenters!!!
Good morning 🌅, and it is worth it because it will be with you for your lifetime, unless you need a bigger one,
So true!
Good job.
I definitely know the feeling 😂😂 but thank you for the kind words! Means a lot
The first scratch on a new car is the hardest. Same with this nice looking bench.
Seriously - it's not 'if,' it's actually 'when.'
Question: are the two split-top components held to the base by gravity alone?
Appreciate the thought but I’m in Seattle lol
💯% Wort it great job on building the Workbench
Thank you!! 😊
You’re right! Sometimes it’s hard not to get caught up in the numbers. But I’ll be patient.
Well damn, beautiful video and amazing project result! Really enjoyed this, subbed!
Haha thank you!!! Happy to have you around! :)
really nice Video and a Pleasure to look. Greetings from Germany
Thank you!!! 😊 Greetings from Seattle!
Wonderful workbench and I hope it will fit your needs a long time.
The hammer does the first dent, but believe me, it won't be the last 😉
Hahaha I know it won’t be lol and yeah I hope it does as well! :) thanks!
Love to hear why you went with this design.
Honestly I couldn’t tell you 😂😂
I didn’t spend 3 months building it, but that hammer hit hurt ME. It’s a beautiful bench.
Hahaha thank you! We share that pain
Great work! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you sir!
It was all worth it. Because I subscribed.
it really was... thank you! :)
I love it! Haha I died at the very end with the hammer! But in the end it will get used but that doesn't mean it can look god damn pretty! you can be proud on yourself, enjoy it^^
Thank you! 🙏🏻
Man, I was gonna subscribe because I dig your style and big props for being local. But your spiel about wanting 10k got the sub. Love your videos man, can’t wait to see what else you do.
Thank you sir!!! Glad to have you around! :) so the 10k spiel worked 😏
Beautiful
❤️
Nice job!
Thank you!! 😊
Superb video! You’ll hit your subscriber mark no issues I’m sure.
The drill bit (leg vice) choked up because that wee spiral thread at the tip pulls the bit into the wood. Happens to me all the time. Slower speed or grind it off 😉
Thank you for sharing your amazing work 👌❤️
I sure hope you’re right!
I’ll have to go check that out! Thank you :)
Bravo 👏 fucken excellent work. LOVE ❤ THIS A REAL WOODWORKER!!
Haha thank you!!!! 😊 means a lot
