My fave Smiths song. The title also instantly caught my attention back then as well as the photo of the single's cover.I didn't know if i had to laugh or get 'haunted' by its 'dark and macabre' title (as you said) for a start.
LOVE this song. i once used it as in a philosophy of language lesson, about the gaps between meaning and usage. the gap here is between the "serious" situation of the coma and the "reporting" of what could established the situation where she is in a coma. it is very witty and funny, yet very easly to be taken as "supporting violence"....
Reminds me if my student days. All the cool kids loved him. I appreciated him and the kitch nature of his work. I loved the sleeve art of their records with British icons of yesteryear.
Oh this is just Morrisseys black sense of humour. I remember my friends and I laughing when we first heard it. It was always very telling who saw this was funny and who didn't. IT'S SERIOUS! On the serious side it plays with idea of those throwaway comments people make without thinking - I could kill her! Suddenly the person is faced with the realisation they might actually die. That in itself is a darkly comic situation. It was definitely a deliberate baiting of the media, on the idea they were miserable and only wrote about miserable subjects, humourless and morbid. If you don't get the humour then it looks that way. Wrapped up in a sweet, pretty little tune that's easy to hum. Perfect.
Yes, Morrissey has the blackest of black humors. The best,, sarcastic baiting of media stories, as you said. Then, there is the sentiment, mixed in. The complications of Morrissey and the song are what makes it so brilliant and dark.
Let’s face it, a top twenty single called Girlfriend In A Coma is intrinsically funny. A kind of musical tribute to Young, Gifted and Black but laden with arch cynicism. I think, not sure though.

Just the kind of happy Manchester sound that I enjoy.
Let me whisper my last goodbyes ... I know, it's SERIOUS!
Haha, your user-name has changed! DJ Sebzematik in the house.
@@mattsnider2667 In France you could buy blenders called "Seb Robot Mixeur". I always thought this would be a nice name had I ever been a DJ. 😄
bingo you got it this time. The singer is a sociopath, that's one of the many clever and interesting aspects to this song

The way he says :do you really think she'll pull through?
Is very telling. The tone of it. He basically says ofc shes not gonna pull through 😅
Exactly. He put her there and needs to finish her off before she wakes up and tells everyone. Such a scamp, Morrissey
That's my reading too.
Finally someone said it 😂
😂
The song is about a gay man in love with a bisexual man who's girlfriend is seriously ill in hospital.
