As always guys, I love your feedback and I'm more than happy to answer questions where I can, so drop them in the comments below and I'll reply as soon as possible :) Scaffolding dimensions: Main beams - 1/4" square balsa strips, cut to 3" or 1.5" long depending on how tall I wanted that piece to be (I made most 3") Cross strips - 1/4" strips of 1/16" thick balsa, cut to long enough to cross diagonally (about 3 and 3/4" for the 3" tall piece, and 2 and 3/4" for the half height ones) Railing dimensions: Bottom piece - 3" or 1.5" wide (You can make them all 1.5" wide if you like for more flexibility, its just easier to quickly lay them out with some 3" ones too), 1/2" high to match the side of the floor tiles. All cut from 1/16" thick balsa, in this case I cut down 3" wide balsa multiple times, but you could buy 1/2" wide balsa strips, or glue together 1/4" strips, and so on. Railing top pieces - 1/8" wide, and then 3" or 1.5" long to match the bottom piece Railing posts - 1/8" wide, 1 and 1/4" tall Again 1/16" thick, I bought these as 1/8" strips for ease of use, but it's a LOT cheaper to buy wider strips and cut it down yourself, that is an option. Ladder Dimensions: One storey ladders - 4" tall Two storey ladders - 7" tall Three storey ladders - 10" tall Rungs - 1" wide All cut from 1/8" wide, 1/16" thick balsa strips again Wash mix: If you've made this kind of wash before it's basically the same as the black brown wash I usually use except it's pure black ink, and no brown. If you haven't, it's easy to make. The mix is just a 60/40 mix of water to acrylic matte medium With a few drops of flow improver in as well And then some carbon black ink to add the colour before shaking. For a half full 120ml bottle I used 20 drops, so you can multiply that by how much you're making to get the right amount. Tin safety: Tin is safe enough to use if you're reasonably careful, I cut most of mine from tin can lids with scissors. most of it isn't sharp enough to be a problem, but it's important to be aware than it can be. Make sure you're wearing thick gloves when cutting and handling, I use some woodworking gloves. If you want to make doubly sure the tin isn't sharp, use a metal nail file along the edges to round it off.
Usually, yes, and you can add one with balsa and a magnet to connect to tin under the tile, if you want them :) This was going to be in the video, but I thought it would be of more limited interest so I cut it in favour of getting the video out in a decent amount of time 😅
Literally all this content is GOLD. it's all made with a good level of detail and the crafts you make, I can tell that you are actually using them and not just making something so you have content for a video... That's what most of the other crafting dms do on their channels... It just seems like everything you build is meticulously planned out and executed in a very matter of fact type of way that I really enjoy. Keep up the good work! Stay safe...
I certainly will! And thank you for the compliment! Most of this stuff is ideas I've had for my own games and how I want to make that real at the table - it's just rewarding to see how many people agree with me 😅
I am absolutely enamored with your work. 1 of the few model terrain content makers that is innovative and essentially giving back/improving the community with each video. Some content makers just show what they can do - which is fine if you only want to kill time on youtube but yours do so much more. Wish i was in a position to donate funds - communities need more content creators like you.
Well I really appreciate the support you can give man, even if it's just likes, comments and maybe buying your stuff through the channel amazon links or whatever. I appreciate all the support anyone gives the channel :) And thats kinda the goal with my videos, I do them to show how to build a usable collection, in my own style and vision but with alternatives for other preferences 😄
Absolute genius! Well done! You've done a great job future proofing the whole system to all this expansion. I'd love to see one of your gaming sessions using all these set peices.
Such a wicked idea, I don't use magnets (I've got little kids at home right now and the horror stories of children swallowing magnets has put me off it for now) but these have inspired a similar (though far less modular) build.
I can't express how great you and this channel is! Outstanding subjects, use of magnets are the most extensive i have seen in any channel. I favor your teaching methods, it allows example with expansion. Keep up the great work!
Oh no, I’m just making the general analysis because no matter how you buy balsa wood it carries a premium because of its properties. Yes you do save a little buying in bigger pieces and cutting it down yourself. But then you have to factor in your time doing so and how much you saved. If any, but I do like where your heading with this project. You just opened up a whole world of possibilities.
I have never played any of this and have no intention to. And I absolutely love this channel, this is so neat!! And the way you make these videos is S-Tier.

This looks absolutely perfect for games like Warcry. I appreciate the simplicity, specially regarding magnetization since I'm not very good at it. Might give this a try when I finish my current project. Thanks for the content!
I cant get enough of these videos. Ive watched other channels until i found yours. Everything is so simple and functional its amazing. Its like playing with legos.

for balsa planks, I often take a square peice and wedge split it for a very rough surface on one side and a very flat one on the other, for a pretty side, and an easilly placed side. Very excited as well to send my players to blight town.
The wood tiles on top have matching walls in the stable video, you can absolutely do this :) I'll be posting an upgrade video showing the balsa versions on patreon at some point soon when I get a spare second 😅
This is pure wizardry and I LIKE IT. Each week you post I think, he can't top this! Then you do... So I'm just going to stop doubting you. ALL HAIL THE ARCHIVE!

I can think of many situations involving gnolls and a mine that this will work perfectly. I think i’d also make some 2x3 scaffolding too for those high up narrow platforms to get at hard to reach ore
Fantastic video as always! I can't play with my players in person as we're all spread out but I look forward to a day when I'm able to come back to these videos and build all of them. Very inspirational and entertaining :]
This guy is absolutely genius. Did he mention how expensive balsa wood is. But still brilliant instead of the metal pieces drill holes and super glue steel barrings like the magnets.
I love the idea of the magnets on the ladder, too bad I enjoy playing war games so my opponent wouldn’t be able to use them. Tragic. Great video, love your stuff
Excellent. Might mount my cross pieces a little differently in that each piece will be on opposite sides of the balsawood posts. That way I will not need to add the little bits to lift the cross piece for keeping things straight. The idea came from trellis's that old up railway lines in my area.
I have already started hitting the like button even before watching the video. You have been so consistent in the high quality of your work that I just know it's going to be great again.
Fantastic content! Just finished building enough of these pieces to put on a table for my Mordheim club! Mine's a little wobbly particularly if I use the wide-top layout... Might put together some bases with magnets and weights built in.
Cool! Wobbles are usually due to things either not being the same length (or the cut being angled, which makes it slightly longer than it seems) or if you make it without the little piece between the two crossbars, like I say in the video :) If you find yours is wobbling for some other reason let me know! I'm genuinely curious to iron out problems with my systems :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial it's a funny one - I'm pretty sure it's my workmanship being off by a mm on one leg, however part of it might be that diagonally opposite corners of each tower are able to move 1-2mm towards each other and apart, slightly changing the balance.
These are great! My only critique is you could have added a few "nail holes", mod-podge "bolt heads", or thread "rope" to hold things together. Those would be nice little added details.
Totally agree. Honestly this time I aimed to keep the project simple to make it seem less intimidating and easy for anyone to make for their table... That said, I'm almost certainly going to add those details when I add more to this system in a future video 😅
I like how you keep trying to improve your designs and make things even more efficient. I like the balsa wood idea better. I've used xps foam and it's great but really hard to find where I live and I don't have a cutter which makes it take much longer.
@@RPArchiveOfficial Yeah I don't think it would work well for stone if you could get it in cubes since it does have wood grain. Which is a bummer as far as stone goes. perfect for anything wood.
@@RPArchiveOfficial Oh yes I agree. Was just thinking something like that would be nice. I was having a conversation in my head so that's why it didn't make much sense. :D
Got one, but a - it's a pain to fit the bit unless I'm doing tons at once and b - not everyone has one and I wanted to be clear you could do it without an extra tool :)
Ok this system is cool as shit. This is the first video I've seen so now I'm going down the rabbit hole of your content to see the others. I'm not a DM but I love building minis and this looks like tons of fun!
Definitely that's why I love coming to your channel it's really easy finding inspiration when you need it the most, and your videos always sparks an idea to my on going D&D camping I'm having trouble figuring out what to do whit my player :D
So when are you gonna start selling your full-sized modular homes? Because sometimes people want a wrap-around porch and sometimes they don't. Awesome work as usual.
Haha, you don't have to build it as fast as I do, I'm pushed by channel deadlines 😅 If it makes you feel better, I don't have enough of half the stuff I've made to use in the way I want, if I was making this for myself I'd have made half the stuff, but twice as much of each or something :)
Balsa is expensive, might as well go to forest and pick sticks and use them. I live in 3 floor flat in town, but we have forest strip of forest next to building.. Yes, forest in middle of town.
Absolutely! Every magnetic set saves time, money and storage space making other versions and near identical bits for other builds later.... A good investment in my book 😅
610 like with mine and 0 dislike ! Its a perfect ! Perfect like the build , perfect like your video , perfect like your work , perfect like your accent ahah
It might be nice to have some little roofs to these, like a watchtower might have, so the people under it are slightly protected from the elements. Has anyone made anything like that?
Ah! Easy thing to miss, I may have stopped mentioning but probably shouldn't - it's just cut from a tin can lid :) have a few bowls of soup and you're golden! There's more info on using tin in the pinned comment too, hope that helps!
@@RPArchiveOfficial Ah ok thanks! ^^ I use it too but it is tedious to cut and flatten, I was hoping to find some on amazon in sheet format but for now I haven't found any.
@@RPArchiveOfficial I am using it with the miniatures to magnetize the parts, in this way I have to use the magnets only in the body. But now I'm also trying to create necromunda terrain inspired by your videos ^^
I didn’t have 50 around, tried 100, and much prefer the wire brush. Really lets you get deep texture, whereas the sandpaper wears away at the whole thing and creates dust
Would the model need to have the magnet placed at the edge to let it climb the ladders, and would this be messed up in any way if it is just added onto a base that already has a magnet at its center?
It would, this is one of the reasons I'm promoting the use of hollow bases with tin can strips glued beneath - magnets when and where you need them, and space under the base where you need that instead!
On a 3" railing section, per the video, if you leave space at the two ends at 1/4", 6 rails at 1/8" wide, with 5 gaps at 1/2" as you say that is 3.5+ inches long, not 3 inches. How does that fit the 3x3 platform tiles? Thanks!! Just seeing weird math in my numbers.
The rails are centred at those measurements, so the middle of the rail goes 1/4" from the edge, the next goes centred on 1/2" further from there, and so on :)
That's basically the reason I went with stronger magnets in the balcony floors, they're fine on their own - but you can add columns underneath just by making some with magnets in the top and adding tin under the balcony floors - not sure if I show that In the video 😂
it means it isn't the perfect size to fit INSIDE the two posts on either side, which would make the whole thing thinner than intended :) making it longer gives it just enough length to keep the two sides as far apart as intended. You can kinda see this at 3:13 where the forward posts are slightly overlapped by the foam - its the same at the back.
gonna go against the grain here, those scaffolds would be unrealistic. Without a horizontal tie the diagonals would be pushing outward, fine if its against the ground or has a deck on top, but stacked 2 high they wouldn't work in real life, horizontal forces would blow the joints out. they look great though, love the balsa.
Funny thing is, the original design had a horizontal cross beam on each side... But I removed them because I thought most would see it as too complicated 😂
As always guys, I love your feedback and I'm more than happy to answer questions where I can, so drop them in the comments below and I'll reply as soon as possible :)
Scaffolding dimensions:
Main beams - 1/4" square balsa strips, cut to 3" or 1.5" long depending on how tall I wanted that piece to be (I made most 3")
Cross strips - 1/4" strips of 1/16" thick balsa, cut to long enough to cross diagonally (about 3 and 3/4" for the 3" tall piece, and 2 and 3/4" for the half height ones)
Railing dimensions:
Bottom piece - 3" or 1.5" wide (You can make them all 1.5" wide if you like for more flexibility, its just easier to quickly lay them out with some 3" ones too), 1/2" high to match the side of the floor tiles.

Again 1/16" thick, I bought these as 1/8" strips for ease of use, but it's a LOT cheaper to buy wider strips and cut it down yourself, that is an option.
Ladder Dimensions:
One storey ladders - 4" tall
Two storey ladders - 7" tall
Three storey ladders - 10" tall
Rungs - 1" wide
All cut from 1/8" wide, 1/16" thick balsa strips again

Small nitpick/curiousity, wouldn't the balconies have some kind of angled brace under them? Like a slanted piece of wood or something for stability?
Usually, yes, and you can add one with balsa and a magnet to connect to tin under the tile, if you want them :)
This was going to be in the video, but I thought it would be of more limited interest so I cut it in favour of getting the video out in a decent amount of time 😅
For the main beams, could I use circular dowels, or would that not work?
Should work, as long as you can get the cross planks glued on at right angles using the foam framework :)
@@RPArchiveOfficial thank you. I was worried I mucked up the whole thing getting the wrong shape of wood

It's one of those things that you don't realise how much you're missing until you see it 😅
Definitely that's why I love coming to your channel it's really easy finding inspiration when you need it the most, and your videos always sparks an idea to my on going D&D camping I'm having trouble figuring out what to do whit my player :D
Glad I can help! It's the main reason I wanted to do this channel really, so it's really nice to hear things like that 😄
Then you are doing an awesome job :D
So when are you gonna start selling your full-sized modular homes? Because sometimes people want a wrap-around porch and sometimes they don't. Awesome work as usual.
Hahaha! Brilliant 😂
this is awesome ! but why inches ???? :) (joking i will use the conversion calculator) really your channel is GREAT !
These could also be used on the modular castle blocks for wooden battlements
Yes they could and modular upgrades for that are definitely not coming at some point.
Totally 😅
@@RPArchiveOfficial I love all the content, but man I can't keep up
Haha, you don't have to build it as fast as I do, I'm pushed by channel deadlines 😅
If it makes you feel better, I don't have enough of half the stuff I've made to use in the way I want, if I was making this for myself I'd have made half the stuff, but twice as much of each or something :)
Balsa is expensive, might as well go to forest and pick sticks and use them. I live in 3 floor flat in town, but we have forest strip of forest next to building.. Yes, forest in middle of town.
I did say you can use other wood if you can find the right shape :)
Your stuff is so amazing
Thank you :)
That's a lot of soup cans! 🤣
Literally like maybe 3 or 4 lids in total :)
You make me think. Should I reconsider magnets?
Absolutely! Every magnetic set saves time, money and storage space making other versions and near identical bits for other builds later....
A good investment in my book 😅
Matt, have you checked out the Lasting Tales Kickstarter? Now stands at over 200 minis for $75, if you’re short!
Haha, it's not so much the lack of minis, as the lack of PAINTED minis that I'm happy to show on the channel ;)
Spent most of the last year catching up. Reckon I have done about 500!
This is amazing, l need to adapt it to sci fi, and make some amazing industrial scenarios o.o
I'll be doing Sci fi sets at some point... Eventually 😅
So very awesome.
Thanks :)
610 like with mine and 0 dislike ! Its a perfect ! Perfect like the build , perfect like your video , perfect like your work , perfect like your accent ahah
Hahaha! Thank you! 😁
Very very cool
Thanks :)
It might be nice to have some little roofs to these, like a watchtower might have, so the people under it are slightly protected from the elements. Has anyone made anything like that?
I love you Matt
curious (im sure you've tried both) , why make them wide enough to straddle a tile instead of same tile width to set it on?
The tiles do sit on?
Basically it's a) easier to make and b) easier to connect edges to railings/ladders:)
Hi, your videos are so inspiring! there is only one thing that confusing me 8:35 are the strips made of tin? and where do you buy it? thank you.
For small pieces I find it works great because it needs less flattening :) as for cutting, scissors usually work great for me, what is it you use?
@@RPArchiveOfficial I am using it with the miniatures to magnetize the parts, in this way I have to use the magnets only in the body. But now I'm also trying to create necromunda terrain inspired by your videos ^^
Sounds awesome :)
Amazing. Now do one for necromunda and I'll set up an altar in your honour at home.
Haha, Sci fi stuff is on the list... Just not too soon 😅
@@RPArchiveOfficial no altar for you for the time being, then... 😤
🤣🤣🤣
Haha! I'll get there! 😅
I hope 😁
Rather than wire brush, 50 grit sandpaper works wonders and is easier to use.
I didn’t have 50 around, tried 100, and much prefer the wire brush. Really lets you get deep texture, whereas the sandpaper wears away at the whole thing and creates dust
do you have any particular recommendations for the kind of tan paint used to paint stone as I'm not particularly familiar with the paint naming scheme
I generally use a tan colour from hobbycraft in the UK because its what I started using, its closer to a milky coffee colour than parchment really :)
Magnets: _Exist_
RP Archive: _It's free real estate._
Haha! I know I've done well when I get memed 😅
I keep trying to think of something cool to add on to this but you seem to have covered all the bases and then some.
I've got two I didn't make or mention... But they're coming in future videos 😉
I keep wanting to put posts under the balcony. I can't help but always worry about a balcony loosing it's strength and support.
That's basically the reason I went with stronger magnets in the balcony floors, they're fine on their own - but you can add columns underneath just by making some with magnets in the top and adding tin under the balcony floors - not sure if I show that In the video 😂
Fuck! This is genious!
Haha! Thanks man 😅
Gah another excellent video!
Thank you! 😁
Why is the second template 2" x 2" x 2 1/4"? Why the extra 1/4"?
it means it isn't the perfect size to fit INSIDE the two posts on either side, which would make the whole thing thinner than intended :) making it longer gives it just enough length to keep the two sides as far apart as intended. You can kinda see this at 3:13 where the forward posts are slightly overlapped by the foam - its the same at the back.
@@RPArchiveOfficial thank you!
gonna go against the grain here, those scaffolds would be unrealistic.
Can you elaborate on what the horizontal tie would look like?
