For more SF versions of D&D, or as wargaming terrain for Warhammer 40K or the like, painting the cheese cloth green might suffice to make it look like modern+ canvas tents. Maybe replacing the cocktail stick poles with stiff wire, to simulate metal rods. Because it doesn't matter if you're an advanced civilization, if your forces are on campaign in the middle of an alien wilderness, eventually your troops will need to pitch tents.

ONE thing though - as a frequent user of medieval tests and the like - a tarpaulin like the one on 4 poles, would collapse instantly in the rain, unless it’s actually made with a hole in the middle, which kind of defeats the purpose. Your tent designs are perfection! I've always thought cheese cloth looks too coarse for the 28 mm scale. In the US, Dollar Tree has "craft fabric" in little rolls and the light beige ones are perfect for canvas, and even better if you paint them with black coffee, which I recommend as an ideal wash for tent canvas. This combo makes for great sails too. Thanks for all you do!
Yes, definitely too coarse for me as I use my terrain for both 28mm and 20mm scale. The tents would represent 2-3 man versions in 28mm and 6-8 man in 20mm. I believe military tents pre-1900 would mainly use off-white canvas, and you’d see little texture at this scale.

"kitchen rolls" and "cheesecloth"... what do you think we are, victorian peasants? :P All jokes aside these are super cool, and I love seeing "scratch builds" that well, don't look like they were scratch built! Inspires me to put more attention to detail in my own work and to be creative about material use. I usually only use materials I already have extra of (basically trash), but I may have to pick up some cheesecloth to try these...
Those look so nice. What would you advise for storage? I can imagine they'd get crushed and broken (especially the stakes and rope) if you're not careful.
The tents themselves are pretty durable, just don't pile things on them. If you choose to add the ropes I'd give them their own little shelf/drawer, I'll be making another foam core storage box for all my scatter soon, that's where they're headed :)
You might consider posting this one on the Fallout Wasteland Warfare facebook group. The New Vegas wave was released this year and people might like to make these encampments for their Legion and NCR armies.

Also, I love this idea and will see if I can make my own, but have a few of the small tents have one open side to stick stuff in. I would also be considering making larger tents? like the ones that act as a shelter for horses. or a big tent for people to gather inside. Would you be making a colourful set by any chance? Imagine these bright and colourful banners strung between these tents that can have games, food and drink inside, build in a similar style as the captain's tent (or one with a pyramid topper even). And then the ven bigger tents can be section of tents walls, that can also be used as dividers in the bigger tents or just free-standing barriers for privacy, hiding ballista or even used to pen in animals or prisoners instead of having a fence. A roof for such a big tent might not be needed, though would be understandable to leave out given how big a tent-like that would be on the table. Also, cannot stop imagining the possibilities of having flagposts based on the tent posts combined with the banners! I love your videos, they give lots of good ideas. :)
Thanks! Yeah flags on top would be cool, as would all the other stuff :) Honestly I would have made them that way but I wanted maximum flexibility for using with different factions, so everything had to stay more neutral 😅
I wonder if using a canvas drop cloth from the hardware store (some are thinner than others) would work for tents and banners? I think the texture would be good. I'm not sure of the scale of the weave off hand though. I know the only cheesecloth I've ever found is the cheaper one and would be kinda ugly :( Also, the drop cloth material would def take paint and stain really well. I used to use it for other crafts years ago and it's so cheap for tons of material.
I might have to try this to see if I can do better. ;) 'Cause I'm a jerk like that. I'm curious if I could use a derivative of your technique to build a hammock but get it to hang as through there was weight in it. Also, you make me nervous with your knife skills. Not that you don't have any, but there a trick you can use to cut-off tails of thread/string to prevent the knife from slipping and cutting into your freshly finished project. Maybe I'll start making my own crafting videos. (Probably not) Good stuff, by the way! It makes me want to build things.
General question: when you use your amazing terrain for D&D, what do you do instead of a grid. Do you just use a tape measure? or have you got a different, more clever, solution?

Hey do you think that it is possible to make a knife "stabbed" in the table to hold maps for your furniture system? I think it would be a cool detail but the knife is supposed do be thin so there isn't room for a magnet
Its possible, you just need to keep enough of the paper open to place a bottle or something on to actually hold it down, or make a little ink pot or paperweight specifically for that :)
If you are married to the idea of it specifically being a knife, you could always make it so the knife is glued to the map and the map itself is glued to a magnet. You'd just probably want to make a knive-less version with a hole in the proper location for when the players inevitably take the knife, and while we're at it, a map only version with just the correct hole location, no knife, no magnet at full scale for the occasion where the player who takes the map actually wants to use it.
Oh almost certainly, T shirt fabric would probably work, but the multi layered nature of the cheesecloth helps it stick to the easy framework of the template, while leaving the top layer loose (ish) to help with the more flowing cloth look :)

The main reason I used tacky glue was its less hydrated than pva (school glue would be the worst for this, as its diluted pva). The water in the pva makes the ink lines of the template run a bit, it should be fine if you put the template ink side away from the cloth and use a thinner layer of pva than I used tacky glue (see what I did with the supply cover roof-on-sticks where I dabbed away the excess). Pva doesn't always go wrong, but tacky glue is less prone to it :)

We're making tabletop gaming accessories here, remember. Perfect authenticity is neither desired nor useful. The effect is still going to be "this tiny object represents the thing" no matter if it's the brilliant set pieces like Matt has made here or pieces of triangular folded paper.

If you want an easier version, swap the cheesecloth for dried out baby wipes. They tend to work quite a bit better for a lot of cloth things.
Oh I've tried it, I'm just not a fan of the texture :)

Another great material for cloth stuff like this is those cheap shop rags you can buy, soaked in paint or glue.
I made tapestries and rugs out of these, and pulled a thread out of each edge to make a fringe.

Could possibly use a single layer of cross stitch ada cloth instead of cheese cloth.
I think the first tents can be modified to make one of the sides look like an actual tent opening.

I also use gridless terrain and for measuring distances, I just took a piece of dowelling 10"-12" long and marked it in 1" increments.
What Adam said works, I use tape measures for me and all players, dm is final adjudicator. If wargamers can manage with tape measures so can we! 😁

Cut the tip off, glue it to the paper, possibly on the underside where you cut a slit in the paper for the knife to pass through :)

um i start at looking at wood glues just in a thick format but i think here a "standard" school stick glue will work
