After a little over a year being a part of this wonderful community, here, FB and TT, learning from you has been a gift that i will forever treasure. The wonderful stories you tell, the books we read, history is now making sense to me. You are able help us ❤understand a part of history that is complicated and instead of getting stuck in all that mud of history, it gets clearer each time i listen to you. 0:01
Thank you so very much. We are English and have a very long ancient history. we get up set when people get it wrong. Your team has got it right. You have transported me back to the first King of England time.well done to this day, British sovereigns have worn crowns.
@Evelyn Edwards you and Chris inspire me to find vacations house in Edinburgh or Motherwell, Scotland so I can walk around to castle and church in person
@@EvelynEdwardsI was about to enthusiastically agree with the commenter and then I saw this reply. Athelstan was pretty great and so are you. I’d been thinking that this voice was the best, most beautiful, and most expressive AI I’d ever heard. 😊
Wow! Love this video, you make me want to research more history. Who knows maybe one day they'll find where he's buried. Remember when they found King Richard buried in that parking lot?
Excellent synopsis! Athelstan should be better known as truly the first king of England. Too many people think that credit belongs to William the Conqueror.
There are two theories as to why he never married. He was incredibly pious and celibacy was celebrated then. Also it could have been a condition of Wessex accepting him as king- that when he died and the line would not continue through him.
Yes. Aetrhelstan was the first King of the English and as you say held sovereignty over the whole of GB for a time. Educated, intelligent and caring, his court became quite possibly the most influential in Europe so much so that some European rulers sent their sons to be educated at Aethelstan's court. I have for years now thought I will definitely invite King Aethelstan to my fantastic dinner party for selected former monarchs of England. A great man about whom we know little other than that he achieved much.
I don't think England will ever have such an amazing and positively progressive king ever again. I don't think the role of the king is set up for this to be the case.
No. If you pause and read the sign Aethelstan Gifted the land of Kings Heath to the people of Malmesbury after his death and that is the year it became officially theirs.
Think you misunderstand me - re - The First King of England. "Bath Abbey. An Anglo-Saxon monastery was first constructed, which was where King Edgar, the first king of all England, was crowned in 973 AD." (I'm not a historian - merely an interested total amateur! Lived in Bath for a few years in the 1980s. I seem to remember there being a plaque about King Edgar in the Orange Grove.)
@@marcusross8751 Edgar the Peaceful, who was crowned at Bath Abbey was absolutely not the first king of a United England. He WAS absolutely crowned at Bath Abbey and the first king to be crowned there. Aethelstan was the first king of a UNITED England. Head to google- literally type in “who was the first king of a United England” and Aethelstan will come up.
@@marcusross8751 there is also no orange grove at Bath Abbey. There is both a plaque and a stained glass window depicting Edgar the Peaceful being crowned king there. Plaque is outside, window inside in the back right hand corner.
Whatever!! But the text on the plaque (honest, just checked on-line) reads:- "Edgar FIRST KING OF ALL ENGLAND [my capitals] was crowned by Dunstan Archbishop of Canterbury in the Saxon Abbey on this site on Whitsunday A.D. 973"
😉😉 this is the real story! I’m so glad Vikings and the Last Kingdom made you want to learn more! That is what I love about TV dramas! They make you want to know more!

Awwww Scotland is a super amazing place. You would love it there. 💚
Im Scottish and would advise to stick to Edinburgh (not Motherwell) for your holiday home!
This was very interesting. Aethelstan sounds like a progressive ruler. And I love the voice of the moderator! Thank you. cheers
The moderator? Do you mean meeeeee?! 😉💚 thank you so much. Aethelstan was a fascinating man, and as far as Kings go- a pretty great one.

@@Debbie338 ohhhh bless you. Thank you Debbie! 💚🙏🏻
Not sure, as a Scot, I’d call Athelstan “progressive”.

They’ve combed over this area pretty thoroughly. Sometimes monks would move bones and hid them when they knew Henry’s men were coming. So 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ 💚
Should have left him there, imo.
It was so exciting to actually visit Malmesbury Abbey a few days ago.
Ahhh yay! So glad you were able to go!!!

Ohhh dear! Do they?! I come across most people thinking it was Alfred. 💚
@Evelyn. True although he was King only of Wessex. AngloSaxon history should get more attention!
I don't see why, considering he defeated Harold the saxon King.
This is gold one Evelyn :)
Thank you so much friend!!
Beautiful and we'll spoken narration so ethereal ❤

Probably that progressive he turned WOKE😂
Great video, most of englands history starts after 1066, thank you
Ohhh but there is so so much before then! So many interesting people and stories! So glad you enjoyed!! 💚
My 33rd great granduncle.....
The stone slab marked 941 is the date when the bones were moved to Malmesbury ?? Sorry i didnt get that.....
No. If you pause and read the sign Aethelstan

Thanks Evelyn. There Are still Edgars and Alfreds, but no Aethelstans
Alfred was pretty spectacular…so that doesn’t sound like to bad of a deal. 😉😉💚 thank you friend!
Well, Bath Abbey reckons it is Edgar!
I live on Bath. I’ve never heard that in my life. The tomb in Malmesbury is empty. And Edgar is definitely not here either. 😉
