I had a negative experience with American. I bought a first class ticket with miles. My flight was delayed (due to "maintenance") and I was rebooked on another flight but in economy, not first class. The American agent at the airport said I should contact customer relations and get a credit for the difference in miles. I emailed customer service and received a generic "sincerest apology" reply but no adjustment. I will not forget this.

Their “customer service” is a joke. I received not one but two form letters that had nothing to do with a complaint I had. I gave up. Life is too short to deal with this horrible airline. Now I only fly them when I have no alternative.

I had a similar situation, was in 1st class by some strange reason meals were not served, not even an apology from the crew AND meal choices were taken at departure so what happened here? I contacted customer services (I had a mileage ticket) to request the difference back btw coach and first and what I got in return was “we will do better next time” 😮 seriously? no shit! 🤦🏽‍♀️ after weeks and weeks of emails back and forth I got in return the amazing amount of 3,500 miles 😢which by the way you can not even book a one hour flight with such low amount of miles. AA is the worse! IMO the lack of customer services shows every where, shame, shame, SHAME!

When i used to work for American back in the 00s the service was not perfect, yes there were a few indifferent employees amongst the good ones but I do remember the onboard service being better than what I saw in this trip report and this clearly shows that management at that company has gotten worse and not better as they promised when the merger happened.

Why should they provide superior service if they hold such a large share? I have flown to ORD, BWI, JFK, or MIA so that I can fly British Airways and get so much better service and food. The contentious labor dispute between Flight Attendants and AA could be the cause of service erosion and indifference to customers. Honestly, they’ve become a flying credit card company. I’ve also had great service from all 3. I have most of my miles with American, and have been treated very well by the staff. I think it’s unfair to judge any airline by a couple staff members, really bad weather, or the food they give you. As a former flight attendant I can explain why disgruntled airline employees won't resign. Soon after 9/11 almost all major carriers filed for bankruptcy, resulting in retirement benefits being cut back or lost all together. And, we took an average of 30% in pay cuts. Flight attendants can't afford to retire. So they're trying to stick it out until they turn 65 but sadly they're taking the anger out on people.

    • @minerran
      @minerran 24 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

Yep I understand. Retiring early is not an option because medical insurance is not affordable on your own and one must be 65 to sign up for medicare. That alone was a showstopper for me when I was laid off at 63 and thought about retiring early. No dice! The FAs should try to have a better attitude because being angry all the time is not healthy especially for older workers. There is enough stress already without us adding to it ourselves.

The main advantage of US airlines (or United at least, being the only one I have experience with) is their apps and constant updates & communication about flight status. After a flight cancellation nightmare that resulted in two almost-missed connections and lost luggage with SQ of all airlines, I've flipped my priorities around to being OK with so-so soft product and even hard product so long as the ground experience is top notch. United absolutely babies you with text and app updates every 30 minutes about where your plane is, when boarding starts, gates changes, etc etc, which is the best when you're exhausted and discombobulated from 20+ hours of long haul travel

Additionally, even though we were flying during daytime they told everyone to close their windows, shut off the lights and basically seemed to expect we’d all sleep the 11 hours returning to LA. This means there are even more senior AA f/a's who can bid for and fly to Rome. Lesson is, unless u like f/a's who have been flying more that 35 years and hate their job, then don't fly transatlantic on AA to Europe. It was horrific and just a union based product. I’m captive to AA in the PHL market for European flights. AA can be mediocre on food, but it is usually a lot better than your JFK to LHR service. As you noted, wine selection is very good. If they actually roll out espresso, I’ll be sold. I’d say westbound food on AA out of Europe is better because catering standards are higher there for a given price point. Philly has great food, but at PHL itself, the demand for quality isn’t there from AA. My recommendation unrelated to AA is never to eat over the overnight flight; it only delays the adjustment process. I find FAs to be generally of high quality out of PHL in business class. Check-in in PHL for business class can seem harried, and the Admiral lounge is out of date. In LHR and ZUR, two recent airports I flew out of on AA, it is exactly the opposite. And no, I couldn’t imagine a PHL based crew serving crew ahead of clients.

The flight attendants were incredibly rude and you only got a cup of soda, with no snacks, The flight attendants served ECONOMY first!!!(that was wicked rude!) Contrast this with my Delta flight from ORF back to SYR, with a layover at LGA. Again, I flew domestic first class. The flight attendants were super nice. They let you have as much as you wanted to drink; they also had pre departure beverages, which American most decidedly did NOT. Delta also gave us the premium snacks, and we could have as many as we wanted. I flew an E175 from ORF to LGA, then an RJ900 from LGA to SYR. Even though I had to connect(there are no nonstop flights from ORF-SYR) it was a way better flight on Delta than American. I wish I didn't have to fly AA at all but they are the only ones that have nonstop service to National. It really sucks!

I once flew American between Tokyo and LA, and remember two things: the captain telling us that the cabin crew were there 'prim-ar-il-y for your safety' and the cabin crew actually spent most of their time in the galley, playing cards. This review doesn't surprise me.

BIg D - you’re so right. The day soft product became most important to me, my days of being a stubborn AApologist ended. Really disappointing. Best to you and Big O.

The cabin crews working for AA are the worst people I have ever met on planes, and I have experienced Air India.

I flew American on their 777-200 CDG-JFK and I guess it was my first time in international business, but everyone was nice 😅 (edit) I didn’t know there was still the old Concept D business seats because I flew the new Diamond seats

My experience as a US frequent flier is that absolutely NO US airline gives a crap about customer experience. Period.

Their priority is increasing quarterly earnings not the 'cattle' flying on the plane

The highest profit margin seats on an aircraft are the business and first class seats, encouraging people to fly those with good service helps sell more premium seats. The business class cabin makes more money than the entire economy cabin despite way fewer passengers.

it is all US airlines now: the cabin crews are entitled and l have been yelled at (YES!) for perceived wrong-doings on all these carriers (like asking for a GLASS of water before take-off on Delta, the steward wordlessly pointing to a small daisan bottle instead; (ice?) champagne available in a glass….) seats just ok, food bla. And among the most expensive business class tickets! Boarding always sh..ite and chaotic. On-time IS most important, most would agree with American here. Thanks for another travel jewel!

I flew AA for the first time on the way back from Chicago to Manchester.
Easily the worst long haul service I've ever had. FAs were disinterested and unfriendly, food was passable at best (I'd flown Aer Lingus out and they were great in all areas), and generally just a bit crap all round. But hey, they got me home in one piece so that's what counts I guess.

American has always had the worst flight attendants. I remember when they took over TWA which had the best flight attendants - and they put all the legendary first class TWA flight attendants in coach service. American attendants couldn’t care less about passengers.
