My kids, now young adults, grew up in this social media era and they didn’t live on their phones. I had their passwords and monitored all their accounts. My kids never snorted condoms, ate Tide Pods, set themselves on fire, hanged themselves, choked on marshmallows or cinnamon, smothered themselves, took a bottle of Benadryl, or were lured away be perverts. They never participated in any of those idiotic trends. Parents have to be accountable to their kids’ actions. However, I’m not saying there is not a need for improvements with these platforms.
So you all know the truth now. The question is what the hell are you going to do about it? You claim to be the lawmakers. Why should not you be fired for not protecting the people from these killers?

Technology should be accessible to the users based on what they are. A student should get access only to the extent of his/her requirement, unlike the scientists, technocrats, academicians etc. should have complete access because they are capable of discerning.
Social media is lawless and unregulated, yes, but it’s literally not illegal activity until laws that are in place are broken.
There’s no point having laws if we don’t refer to them when defining what is and is not legal.

@@ramu9375 Yes it is one of the unfortunate realities of being involved with unregulated businesses. There’s nothing anyone can do if anything goes wrong.
No one is having these sorts of discussions with Skyscanner, for example, because tech companies who are in travel definitely need to follow regulations if they want to succeed.
There have just never been any regulations for social media tech companies so that’s why we are here at this point. This is partially due to the power of tech but also the carelessness of lawmakers. I don’t think anyone’s innocent.

Sure ask the tech companies to compensate our failures in parenting. Goes both ways guys...my take from this. Social Media Platforms will have to better tweak their algorithms to prevent such acts but WE are responsible for protecting OUR KIDS.
A bunch of old people with little or no understanding of social media, who failed to regulate SM when it was in its infancy. Now they're pointing the finger at social media to blame them for suicides and exploitation.

lol. I’ll be brief - I have a masters degree in Human-Computer Interaction. Do you know what that is? Every single social media company has TEAMS of people that studied and are experts in the way human psychology interacts with computers/apps. Everything from the colors, the algorithms, the sounds, the usability - EVERYTHING you see from the moment you pick up that phone or mouse has endless expertise stacked against you and your children - to keep them using them and keep them addicted. They are masters at it and getting even better. . I couldn’t continue it - it went against my morals.
If you think a good a talk with a 12 year old is what the world needs - you’re high as a giraffes ass. That’s like saying “we just need to teach our kids to have a healthy relationship with fentanyl” it’s scientifically almost if not more addicting.

The use of social media needs parental guidance and if possible prohibition. There are irresponsible parents who blamed on others on what happened to their children. The common knowledge is that commercial world and or profit making industries will do anything to generate profit. Sex is overly exposed to children even before FB. I am not defending FB. But, drugs, sex, early pregnancy, suicide, violence were high even before FB and etc. Families must do their parental and family responsibilities instead giving almost all responsibilities to school.
