Click the settings button next to the profile (conversion type), click the "Audio codec" tab change the "Sample Rate" to 480000Hz; save and convert. For those who don't have time to watch the entire 11 minute video.
For some odd reason, no matter what I do, no matter if I change the sample rate to the correct number, I can't for the life of me get this video of mine to retain its audio after being converted from .mkv format to .mp4.
Let first start by saying, "thank you kindly" and last but not least, " Dude you are a life saver". After four (4) hours of pulling my hair out you helped me to solve this conundrum.
I have the opposite problem. Audio is working perfectly fine but no video at all. Codec information shows only 1 stream - The audio stream, but no video stream. Please help
Only having an audio stream with no video stream can mean one of two things: 1) the file ONLY contains audio and never contained video, or 2) the video stream is not recognizable by VLC Media Player. If the video stream is not recognizable by VLC, you could try converting said video using this method and hopefully this will convert your video stream to something VLC recognizes: th-cam.com/video/VSqHjHUIbz0/w-d-xo.html
Heh, thanks for the kind words, but I'm not sure if you're sincere or using sarcasm, as I have never been called concise on this platform...ever...but either/or : )
Oh definitely not sarcasm! I could not have asked for a better video. You took it slow and explained every step very well at just my speed. Thanks again!
Lane Isbell First, ensure VLC plays the audio stream aloud when you play your original .mkv file (if it cannot decode the audio stream, it cannot re-encode the audio stream). Once you confirm this, try compressing using a different audio format within your MP4 file (some compressors do not like converting from other compressor types).
RodneyDickson Which one would you recommend? I've tried about six times to convert a file from .mkv to .mp4 using this method and tweaking little settings (like formats or sample rates or codecs) but each time the video has come out with no sound. I'm about ready to give up, but do you have any other advice? Thanks!
RodneyDickson Cool videos. But, I am trying to compress .mov files recorded live on a Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio. It records on an SSD uncompressed. It puts it in a .mov. When I play the uncompressed video in QuickTime it plays with video AND audio. When I open it with VLC it won't play with sound. I tried compressing anyway with the sample rate changed to 48000 as reported by VLC. Still no good. Help?
Hi Rodney, long time ago i recorded a video with my Cannon A590. Then i use some free and easy to use video converter (i forgot which one) to compress a video. I deleted original video and after some time after i ran a video i heard i do not have an audio. I tried a few methods from then. I want to try once more to fix that. I tried this what you suggest but when i click start VLC has closed. I tried with other combination of video and audio formats and starts to converting. audio info: Format : MPEG Audio Format version : Version 1 Format profile : Layer 3 Mode : Joint stereo Mode extension : MS Stereo Codec ID : 55 Codec ID/Hint : MP3 Duration : 21mn 55s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 128 Kbps Channel(s) : 2 channels Sampling rate : 44.1 KHz Compression mode : Lossy Stream size : 20.1 MiB (5%) Alignment : Aligned on interleaves Interleave, duration : 26 ms (0.52 video frame) Writing library : LAME3.97 and this is a video info: ID : 0 Format : MPEG-4 Visual Format profile : Simple@L3 Format settings, BVOP : Yes Format settings, QPel : No Format settings, GMC : No warppoints Format settings, Matrix : Default (H.263) Codec ID : XVID Codec ID/Hint : XviD Duration : 21mn 55s Bit rate : 2 506 Kbps Width : 640 pixels Height : 480 pixels Display aspect ratio : 4:3 Frame rate : 20.000 fps Color space : YUV Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0 Bit depth : 8 bits Scan type : Progressive Compression mode : Lossy Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.408 Stream size : 393 MiB (95%)
Sadly, if the only version of the video that you kept was the re-encoded one that does not have an audio track, then there is no way to recover the audio track from the re-encoded version of the video file you have. If while playing the video in VLC, you hold CTRL and press J, and it is indicated that you do in fact have an audio stream, then I guess you can try another encoder (for example th-cam.com/video/VSqHjHUIbz0/w-d-xo.html ), however, if only a video stream is indicated in VLC, then I'm sorry to announce that the audio track was lost when the original video was deleted : \
Sadly the audio track might be a silent track with no actual audio recorded to it. If any of your media player softwares actually play actual audio in this video let me know, but otherwise it sounds like the audio is lost forever : \
I tried to play with: Pot, KM, VLM, Winamp, GOM, MPHC,... How this happened? I remembered when i repacked i did not carefully watched video because i used the same application several times before that happened and with all videos were all ok.
Do you think are all chance are lost to recover sound? Please tell me if you are 100% sure, i wont to lost time to search around i to asks on forums. If i can't recover i will accept it but i want to know i tried all what is possible.
I followed your instructions and was able to successfully convert a video that will play with audio on VLC (on my laptop). However, when I moved that file to my external, and tried to watch it on the PS3 & Xbox360, neither had audio. Do you know how to fix this issue?
Hi Rodney. I tried this (converted from mkv to mp4) and the audio plays in vlc now, but not in windows media player. I want to upload the video to youtube. Any suggestions for me?
+tammychan0830 Yep, you simply do not have the proper audio codec to play said audio stream in Windows Media Player. If you upload your video to TH-cam, the audio should be present as intended, so don't worry about Windows Media Player : )
Hey, I tried your trick. It didn't work for me. Is it possible that it doesn't work with Windows 10? I'm having trouble converting an .mod file to .mp4 file with the audio attached. Any other suggestions?
I have now tried literally almost everything and STILL no audio. I have reset the preferences, ive changed the Hz, ive tried to keep the original audio, even have tried different format other than converting it to MP4 and nothing is working. I hate MKV files as is now I despise them. Im ready to give up on this, its pointless now.
@s harrell Ensure VLC plays the audio stream aloud when you play your original video (if it cannot decode the audio stream, it cannot re-encode the audio stream).
I've been fiddling around for about 2 hours until I've decided to look up a solution! I matched the Sample Rate option and it worked well! Thanks so much, cheers!
Hi can anyone tell why all the torrent download are now in MKV format now and what is the best conversion format to watch the converted file on TV and with a media box.... Thanks very much.
The 'scene' favours the codecs that offer the best compression to quality ratio. Presently, MKV represents this (of course, subject to change). I would argue that the best codec to select when converting said files would be the one that is supported by your media box as far as playback goes. H264 is a widely accepted standard that offers an excellent compression to quality ratio. H265 is a bit better, but is less widely supported. For a widely accepted codec that still offers a good compression to quality ratio, Xvid is a great choice. So, to sum it all up, if you have time to kill, try these codecs in order, and as soon as you find one that works, stick with that: H265, H264, Xvid. If you do not have time to waste, Xvid would be your safest choice as far as support and compatibility goes (even my NBox from a couple of years back plays Xvid)
I had the no audio issue, and it appears to have fixed it. 44100; changed to 48000. However, subtitles apparently don't work as "soft subtitles" aren't supported by the MP4 format, and the file conversion apparently picked the wrong audio track, so the movie's playing in another language, even though I know English is available, and I can't find an option to change that in VLC. Argh. Guess I need a more powerful program like Handbrake or something.
Well, it's at least a lot closer than when I started. :) And thankfully, it doesn't apply with every file....just those with more than one audio track.
i have the opposite problem, every video i convert (from mkv4 to mp4) the audio transfers no problem, but the video is black whenever i play it. Any ideas of how to fix that?
Im trying this now. converting time take soo much longer. not complaining so long as it works. i hope this works on the xbox. i dont know it if it will. I already converted from .mkv to .mp4, alas, no audio on the xbox360. dont know if what you just showed complies with the xbox though.. im just..tryin shit lol
Click the settings button next to the profile (conversion type), click the "Audio codec" tab change the "Sample Rate" to 480000Hz; save and convert.
For those who don't have time to watch the entire 11 minute video.
+Grog Thanks for the digest version
+Grog this didn't help. i can either get the sound to work, and the video stutters, or the video is fine, with no audio, or it simply doesn't play
For some odd reason, no matter what I do, no matter if I change the sample rate to the correct number, I can't for the life of me get this video of mine to retain its audio after being converted from .mkv format to .mp4.
Long video for simply "the original audio sample rate may not match with what you're trying to convert to"
Thanks anyway, it helped me out ^_^
+Falxhor This is true.
This tutorial is still able to be followed at 1.5x or 2x speed if you're impatient like me. Thanks for the help.
+hihomiedude This is true. Glad to help out.
All i needed to watch is this video and not have wasted all day finding out what to do. thanks

no help.. did everything as you said but no audio
