THREE TIPS: #1 When you choose the Convert Profile, you might notice there is an h264 and an h265. In particular, on Windows, the VLC font is very small so it's hard to see the difference. Be sure you pick the h264 or you may only get audio... like I did. #2 Don't be a mullet like me and click off the No Disc Menus box. It must be checked or VLC will continue converting until the end of time. I really need to pay closer attention to these tutorials. #3 At the bottom of the VLC screen there is a loop icon (two arrows pointing in opposite directions). I pick my title number also, but I also get it running through all the other titles on the disc very quickly that I haven't asked for which if it's got say 6/7 titles at 40 mins it runs through all them???
@@sairafazil8053 play the bit you want to rip and see what title number it is by looking under one of the sections at the top (can't remember what to click as not Infront of my pc). It will have all the title numbers listed but there will be a dot by the one your currently playing
SOLVED AUDIO - if you get the problem at 3:20 where by playing the file you get the wrong audio as default and don't want to change the audio track in the menu. At 1:15 in the box audio track, if you change the -1 to either 1 or 2 you will then rip it with the original audio as default. Might take a couple of rips to get the right one between 1 and 2 (I've found 2 normally is the right one)

In addition to this, I found for tv shows I didn't need to select the title. And it only had one language so I didn't need to touch any of those. But for some reason the audio would work on other players, but it would be distorted/bass-y. So I selected the wrench icon and selected mkv instead of mp4 and it is perfect. (I also selected the original audio box as well)

Since then, I've had the pleasure of exploring it (mostly through TH-cam videos). What an awesome program! Those students at the French university, who created it, are amazing! This thing can do so much handy stuff, that I can't imagine not having it. tavi.
I'm writing this up to help those out that are having issues with their VLC rips. This is what I use... I use MakeMKV to rip my movies/tv shows. Then I use HandBrake to compress my videos. MakeMKV is very simple to use. 1. Simply load up the program 2. Select the optical drive you are putting the disc in 3. Open the optical drive, insert disc and close the optical drive. 4. Select the optical drive image in MakeMKV. Wait for it to load. 5. Go through the movie/tv show and match up to the one that is on the back of the box. Then rip away. This usually takes 20-35 mins to rip depending on your optical drive. PS. There are a few movies that have multiple files in them. Disney has usually 1-3 files that match the time for the movies and usually that's due to languages in the movie. Like the Disney logo or something like that. Lions Gate usually has a lot of protection files on their disc and I would advise staying away from ripping their movies (retail files not so sure but Netflix and Redbox does). If you see multiple angles being read at the end of the file name it's usually angle 1 that is correct. HandBrake is a great compression program but ironing out what file is correct is very hard. I advise not using it because you can rip the movie faster with MakeMKV see what the file is because sometimes same length videos can also be straight interviews with cast members and directors. HandBrake does have a learning curb to it too get the best quality out the videos you compress I advise you watch tutorials to understand more of what you are doing.

This video is very helpful! VLC is the best way to play DVDs lately as Windows 8 and 10 no longer come with DVD playing software anyways. I was worried I'd have to fiddle around with more third party softwares that try to get you to pay. Praise VLC!

At 2:35 when you say you can only assume it is doing the audio tracks it isn't. It's quickly running through every title on the disk for some reason. I know because I am choosing my title and it is ripping that title but then after it quickly runs through every title on the disk which if you have a dvd with say 6 40min episodes it can take a while to quickly run through the 5 your not ripping

Another scenario is I have our school play which I converted from VHS to DVD. Is there a way of just converting the bits with me in to show people on my phone?

The dvd I record has an intro screen and then a separate screen for the feature. Everything seems to record - but when I play the file ONLY the 16-second intro screen is shown, but not the feature. Is there a fix for this?
VLC works with some of my movie discs. As for others, I have to use WinX DVD Ripper Platinum which SuperPertinax recommends in the description part. This seems a great tool to bypass copy protection schemes.
I've tried VLC numerous times, but I'm never satisfied with the results. There's always quality issues with the output file, eg, lines, lagging, out-of-sync audio/video.
SOLVED - ARE YOU RIPPING THE WRONG SECTION OF THE DVD??? If you are not ripping the right bit of the dvd at 1:15 choose the title number you need in the title box. You can find which title you need by playing the dvd on vlc and clicking playback/title and it will show you which title it is playing. Put that title number in this title box and you will rip the right part of the dvd disc

Thank you for posting this video. My problem is, I tried to play the recorded movie on my MacBook and it seems there's no audio track options like the PC. So, I can hear all narrations and commentaries at the same time while the movie is being played. If you know how to do it in a MacBook could you please make a video as well? Thank you very much for the excellent tutorial. However, my DVD has three separate videos. When the first video was converted and saved a message popped up before the second file saying if I decide to save the second video it will overwrite the first. How can I get around this? Thanks again.

@SuperPertinax. I just found out yesterday that VLC can do this. I'm gonna have to learn by installing the dvd into the writer/reader and see where it puts the files at, then since the SSD I'm using is a new install, there's only the OS on it, so the rest of the drive is empty. Hopefully now when choosing/finding the destination folder, it will be easy.. The dvd's are home made, family videos. Still they have both Video & audio TS files, just like a real DVD Movie would have. Got my fingers crossed on this since it's one of the last things I need to do before calling my friend to let him know his Tower & Laptop are ready to be picked up. His laptop came with the 2.5'' SSD slot empty, so I put a 1TB SSD in the slot for his storage. The Tower, I put a 1TB SSD into it with the OS, so he still has a 750gb partition on it for storage, leaving the 180gb for the OS & to run his iTunes on. Plus he has the extra space for his work files & whatever else he'll want it for. (I guessed what he'd need going by partitions I made on my laptop.... I remember when I converted some other videos last year, the audio wouldn't copy correctly so I had to use a different format but forgot how the process went.... Thanks for uploading your video. @@SuperPertinax Hey, Super, I started to convert the dvd's last night. Thought it was going cool until I decided to check the 1st of 6 dvd's named family. I clicked on it & it showed up with 638mb-mp4. Then once I selected it, the video froze at around 5 minute mark, but the audio continued. So I clicked on the ''Disc 1'' Folder & found that there's like 7-8 VTS folders. So each of the disc's are actually copies of older Reel to Reel Home Movies that my friend converted into dvd's. I just don't know how he ended up doing it because he doesn't have a clue on how to convert movies.... I suppose it's one of the reasons he dropped everything off for me to do lol.... This is probably something that's easy to do but it's been so long since I used anything like DVD Fab to work with Movies, for the time being, I'm just making copies of each DVD & put them in folders Disc 1, Disc 2, 3, 4 & so on. Just so I can give this guy his Tower & Laptop, along with at least 2 sets of these Home Movies, along with the original DVD's..... I'll keep a copy of all 8 DVD Folders & work on converting them over to mp4 format on my own time. If I remember correctly, with Fab, you can convert multiple Video TS Folders into just one, just like regular Movies are made. Whether they're compressed Video TS, or mp4, I doubt it really matters.... Leaving them in the current format, the entire collection will still be under 30gb & since he already has 520gb of movies so far, what's another 30gb... lol....
I have a DVD containing what was originally concert footage captured to VHS tape from the 1980's. The aspect ratio is 4:3 (old school television tube dimensions). The DVD displays correctly in 4:3 format when played in VLC (with the black bars on each side), but when I convert the DVD to mp4, the resulting video is stretched to todays aspect ration - whatever that is, and it looks weird. Any idea how I can get the converter to retain the 4:3 ratio?

I have the free version of VLC on my laptop and i copied John Wayne’s film Rio Bravo but for some reason although it copied it copied without no volume.So I tried ripping Rio Bravo a few more times and those other times it didn’t copy anything. I bought WonderFox DVD Ripper yesterday and to me it’s worth it as it’s straightforward and there’s no hassle. Don’t have to worry about having to add this or add that it does it itself and my ripping of 4 to 5 dvd movies was a success.
How do you get "all" the chapters on the DVD? For example, I am copying a workout DVD and there are 5 segments to choose from. 1) Play all - 2) Introduction - 3) 20 min workout - 4) 30 min workout - 5) Mini workout & Tips. Maybe you can help me with and issue I'm having I'm trying to copy a DVD golf instructional video on my computer with VLC. I've went through the process of convert/save, etc. It starts copying to a file on my desktop but stops at about 2.6 gigs. (The total download is 3.5 gigs) I've been through this process twice with the same result. I have to be doing something wrong. you get winx dvd ripper. you have to pay for it but it works and uses hardware acceleration to transfer. typically a 2 hour movie takes 15-20 minutes on my i5 4000 series dell optiplex. i use vlc as a player only

It's too bad. The destination folder does not fill in, therefore you can't rip the movie. Is there something I'm missing? It goes as planned until you try to choose the folder to point to and nothing happens. It seems you may have a different version of VLC and or not Windows 10 ?

Hi Jason, I’ve tried this a couple of times now, but it’s not recording the audio! I’m saving the rip to the desktop and then transferring it to a 16 GB micro card so I can then play video on MacBook which it does without audio, and my IPad doesn’t see it at all! Any ideas please! SuperPertinax hiya, yes I’m ripping it to windows 10 and saving it to my desktop, ( so it’s easy to find) and when it’s done it’s bit, I then send it to my ‘E’ drive where I have the sad card, it then goes through the sequence, the video is fine but no music or speech! Is present!
What if I want to have the menu from the DVD included? I uncheck the box? However, so far, I can only get the first title ripped from the DVD. VLC is not ripping the other 4 chapters. I'm getting frustrated!

Hey man, I did this so I can put the movie into a blank DVD but im scared the audio won’t show on the dvd since the audio only works on VLC itself when I play it with Movies&TV the audio doesn’t work, do you think the audio will show up on the blank DVD’s ?
VLC is a fantastic player especially for its zoom and slow motion; most other players only have one or the other feature. BUT when will it ever be able to play 1080p BD movies?
Never mind. It turns out it only "worked" because I hadn't unticked the no menus box. Since then it has created videos which are an endless loop of the menu screen, the length of which only differs based on how long I allow it to covert before stopping it.
Hi I converted my first DVD to file no problem! The second time tryng another movie disc when I go to convert, set to mp4, then I get it ready and hit start, the whole box disappears where you hit start? Any Idea? Thanks

Please help, I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to rip different chapters on the disc menu. I have a couple of home video's on my DVD disc that I recorded in chapters 1 and 2 on the disc menu. I've successfully ripped the first chapter but I cannot get VLC to rip the second chapter on the disc menu. It always goes back to ripping the first one again. Any idea's?
I'm trying to rip a DVD and it only captures the first 10 seconds which is the warning not to pirate. Not sure if I can get around that - I do own the DVD and just want it on my computer!
When it was finished, I went to go replay it and it’s choppy and not as flawless as it was in the dvd. The voices are off too. I’ve tried multiple dvds, restarted the computer, tried another computer, uninstalled, reinstalled, and even messed with the settings a bit and it’s still not getting the correct FPS I need. Is there something I’m missing?
@@ladyamaris1179 I know I'm six months late but if you don't know this VLC sometimes have playback issues with their software. I advise you too either play it for a quick minute and rewind the whole video this will sometimes sort the playback issue or use MPC-HC. If you still have issues re-rip with a program called MakeMKV.

yes, look at my handbrake video, you probably wont need the older version, just install the latest handbrake and you should be able to convert to mp4.

I've tried VLC numerous times, but I'm never satisfied with the results. There's always quality issues with the output file, eg, lines, lagging, out-of-sync audio/video.
SOLVED - ARE YOU RIPPING THE WRONG SECTION OF THE DVD???
If you are not ripping the right bit of the dvd at 1:15 choose the title number you need in the title box.
You can find which title you need by playing the dvd on vlc and clicking playback/title and it will show you which title it is playing. Put that title number in this title box and you will rip the right part of the dvd disc
What if the DVD film is in another language but has a choice of languages? should i then leave the menus bit un selected? thanks!

First of all thanks for the great video. I didn't know that VLC player was able to do that. And I have a question. If I use this method will it also download all the different subtitles in the DVD so that I can watch it with subtitles.

Thank you for posting this video. My problem is, I tried to play the recorded movie on my MacBook and it seems there's no audio track options like the PC. So, I can hear all narrations and commentaries at the same time while the movie is being played. If you know how to do it in a MacBook could you please make a video as well? Or better yet, Is there a way to record the movie using VLC without the narration, commentaries or other languages? Thanks.

does it give you the option to change the file name?
you may find it easier to use Hanbrake or DVDshrink to rip the dvd instead (bot are free) depends on what the dvd is

@SuperPertinax. I just found out yesterday that VLC can do this. I'm gonna have to learn by installing the dvd into the writer/reader and see where it puts the files at, then since the SSD I'm using is a new install, there's only the OS on it, so the rest of the drive is empty. Hopefully now when choosing/finding the destination folder, it will be easy.. The dvd's are home made, family videos. Still they have both Video & audio TS files, just like a real DVD Movie would have. Got my fingers crossed on this since it's one of the last things I need to do before calling my friend to let him know his Tower & Laptop are ready to be picked up. His laptop came with the 2.5'' SSD slot empty, so I put a 1TB SSD in the slot for his storage. The Tower, I put a 1TB SSD into it with the OS, so he still has a 750gb partition on it for storage, leaving the 180gb for the OS & to run his iTunes on. Plus he has the extra space for his work files & whatever else he'll want it for. (I guessed what he'd need going by partitions I made on my laptop....
I remember when I converted some other videos last year, the audio wouldn't copy correctly so I had to use a different format but forgot how the process went.... Thanks for uploading your video. MD....

@@SuperPertinax Hey, Super, I started to convert the dvd's last night. Thought it was going cool until I decided to check the 1st of 6 dvd's named family.
I clicked on it & it showed up with 638mb-mp4. Then once I selected it, the video froze at around 5 minute mark, but the audio continued. So I clicked on the ''Disc 1'' Folder & found that there's like 7-8 VTS folders. So each of the disc's are actually copies of older Reel to Reel Home Movies that my friend converted into dvd's. I just don't know how he ended up doing it because he doesn't have a clue on how to convert movies.... I suppose it's one of the reasons he dropped everything off for me to do lol....
This is probably something that's easy to do but it's been so long since I used anything like DVD Fab to work with Movies, for the time being, I'm just making copies of each DVD & put them in folders Disc 1, Disc 2, 3, 4 & so on. Just so I can give this guy his Tower & Laptop, along with at least 2 sets of these Home Movies, along with the original DVD's..... I'll keep a copy of all 8 DVD Folders & work on converting them over to mp4 format on my own time.
If I remember correctly, with Fab, you can convert multiple Video TS Folders into just one, just like regular Movies are made. Whether they're compressed Video TS, or mp4, I doubt it really matters....
Leaving them in the current format, the entire collection will still be under 30gb & since he already has 520gb of movies so far, what's another 30gb... lol....
I have a DVD containing what was originally concert footage captured to VHS tape from the 1980's. The aspect ratio is 4:3 (old school television tube dimensions). The DVD displays correctly in 4:3 format when played in VLC (with the black bars on each side), but when I convert the DVD to mp4, the resulting video is stretched to todays aspect ration - whatever that is, and it looks weird. Any idea how I can get the converter to retain the 4:3 ratio?
try changing the aspect ratio in vlc before you start converting

I have the free version of VLC on my laptop and i copied John Wayne’s film Rio Bravo but for some reason although it copied it copied without no volume.So I tried ripping Rio Bravo a few more times and those other times it didn’t copy anything. I bought WonderFox DVD Ripper yesterday and to me it’s worth it as it’s straightforward and there’s no hassle. Don’t have to worry about having to add this or add that it does it itself and my ripping of 4 to 5 dvd movies was a success.
All I get is the Universal logo, no Derek and Clive. It states 1:28:00 when ripping.
How do you get "all" the chapters on the DVD? For example, I am copying a workout DVD and there are 5 segments to choose from.
1) Play all - 2) Introduction - 3) 20 min workout - 4) 30 min workout - 5) Mini workout & Tips.
I have tried several things but it keeps copying the 20 min workout only.

Personally i would try using a little program called DVD Shrink, it will retain all your chapters etc

I'm trying to copy a DVD golf instructional video on my computer with VLC. I've went through the process of convert/save, etc. It starts copying to a file on my desktop but stops at about 2.6 gigs. (The total download is 3.5 gigs)
I've been through this process twice with the same result. I have to be doing something wrong.
It is in a VOB format and I'm converting it to MP4

you get winx dvd ripper. you have to pay for it but it works and uses hardware acceleration to transfer. typically a 2 hour movie takes 15-20 minutes on my i5 4000 series dell optiplex. i use vlc as a player only

It's too bad. The destination folder does not fill in, therefore you can't rip the movie. Is there something I'm missing? It goes as planned until you try to choose the folder to point to and nothing happens.
It seems you may have a different version of VLC and or not Windows 10 ?

you can use track sync from the tools menu to add or decrease delay

Hi Jason, I’ve tried this a couple of times now, but it’s not recording the audio! I’m saving the rip to the desktop and then transferring it to a 16 GB micro card so I can then play video on MacBook which it does without audio, and my IPad doesn’t see it at all! Any ideas please!

SuperPertinax hiya, yes I’m ripping it to windows 10 and saving it to my desktop, ( so it’s easy to find) and when it’s done it’s bit, I then send it to my ‘E’ drive where I have the sad card, it then goes through the sequence, the video is fine but no music or speech! Is present!
SuperPertinax as to that question, I don’t think it does have audio before transfer, “ That I will have to check out” as cannot be sure!

i am not sure as this tutorial is only for ripping to computer, you should try "dvd shrink"

VLC is a fantastic player especially for its zoom and slow motion; most other players only have one or the other feature. BUT when will it ever be able to play 1080p BD movies?

Never mind. It turns out it only "worked" because I hadn't unticked the no menus box. Since then it has created videos which are an endless loop of the menu screen, the length of which only differs based on how long I allow it to covert before stopping it.
i dont think this works for mac OS VLC player. Please correct me if i am wrong?

If it is converted in a mp4 format or similar format that windows/mac understands it should run fine without vlc

Please help, I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to rip different chapters on the disc menu. I have a couple of home video's on my DVD disc that I recorded in chapters 1 and 2 on the disc menu. I've successfully ripped the first chapter but I cannot get VLC to rip the second chapter on the disc menu. It always goes back to ripping the first one again. Any idea's?

I'm trying to rip a DVD and it only captures the first 10 seconds which is the warning not to pirate. Not sure if I can get around that - I do own the DVD and just want it on my computer!

When it was finished, I went to go replay it and it’s choppy and not as flawless as it was in the dvd. The voices are off too. I’ve tried multiple dvds, restarted the computer, tried another computer, uninstalled, reinstalled, and even messed with the settings a bit and it’s still not getting the correct FPS I need. Is there something I’m missing?

@@ladyamaris1179 I know I'm six months late but if you don't know this VLC sometimes have playback issues with their software. I advise you too either play it for a quick minute and rewind the whole video this will sometimes sort the playback issue or use MPC-HC. If you still have issues re-rip with a program called MakeMKV.
