In order to be sold & shown in Russia a lot of Western media including movies and videogames have to be translated. In Romanian, "Despicable Me" translates as "I'm a small jerk"
In Polish it is literally How to Steal the moon. Best thing is that the sequel was called How to Steal the Moon 2.

It is not the worst naming for the movie based on the game. Usually they fully translate them. Like Assassin’s Creed. There was about 4 or 5 games, all of them was known as "Assassin’s Creed" without translation, and then movie came out and now it is Кредо Убийцы, translated title! Same for Max Payne, Alone in the Dark, Street Fighter, Bloodrayne. Why do they do this? They want to appeal for people, who don't know about this games and don't know english language? Maybe.
In Mexico “The Hangover” was translated to “¿Qué pasó ayer?” which literally means “What happened yesterday?”
In brazil, although "a ressaca" would be the literal translation, it has been comercialized as "se beber não case" ("if you drink, don't marry") which is imo a much better title for the movie. MX title is also quite good

in Hungarian the movie "Alien" is literally translated to "The eighth passenger is death" and I will never understand the thought process behind it

I haven't watched the movies but if I guess I would think the 8th passenger is the alien .
In Ex-Yu countries, Alien was called "The eight passenger." I always thought it was a good title/translation.
It was based on the tagline of the movie, which was: "It's Alien, the 8th passenger. " It is not a great translation, but not really abysmal either.
It ain't a horrible title overall but it was just simply unnecessary to translate and the rest of the movies were all named similarly but they make no sense after the first one.
Alien - "The eighth passenger is death"
Aliens - "Name of the planet: death"
Alien³ - "The final solution: death"
Alien: Resurrection - "Alien 4: Death resurrects"

"The Hangover" is "Very Bad Trip" in France, and no, they didn't even translate it into French, they just decided to call it by a different English title.
In Germany sometimes an English movie gets a different English title, because they think that the words of the original English title are too complex for the German audience, but English it must be.
Haha It is exactly the idea we have of France anglophilia. (They love English but want it simple enough so that they dont need to learn English.)
In Quebec French, it was literaly translated as "Lendemain de veille", which seems right this time.
Imagine a tourist walking into a French movie theater and recognizing the cover of hangover, but then seeing the title "very bad trip"

Same shit with Russian but they translated the second movie like "the hangover from vegas to Bangkok" and then they just dropped the third movie as "Hangover 3rd part". Three different names for the one franchise. Love localisation ahah

In arabic "Despicable Me" translates as "I'm the bastard"
In Serbian breaking bad is translated to "cista hemija" which means "pure chemistry"
That's pretty great. You don't get the comment from Jesse about Walter turning to crime, but it would totally fit how he goes on about making the purest stuff, and becomes ironic as that's less important since he's going nuts for cash and power. And it would be sooo painfully funny in the scenes about his old friends and old job, when he gives up the purity for his pride.

In Poland they didn't even attempt to translate "die hard" into Polish, they named the movie "szklana pułapka" which basically means "glass trap" lmao. It was kinda stupid when other die hard movies weren't in the same setting.

Minyon/Minyonok means Mignon/Mignons. You know, the small cake.
They literally just looked at the original title, found a hungarian word that sort-of sounded like the original title, and used that, so it makes absolutely no sense.
So yeah... We call them "Mignons", because retarded translators...
(Also, Despicable Me is literally just called "Gru". Someone really had to think hard about that...)

Die Hard is translated in THE EXACT SAME WAY IN LITHUANIAN, and I'd say that it sounds stupider than the russian one. It LITERALLY just says "Hard Nutlet"

I don't think that "krepkiy oreshek" is a stupid translation, because "die hard" is quite close to "krepkiy oreshek" in it's meaning. "Hard Nut" is an old phraseologism in Russian meaning "tough nut to crack", that is, a person with an adamant character. "Die hard" in English means not to give up easily, to die only after desperate struggle for your life. So it's not that bad actually.
But "krepkiy smert" makes more sense and is the right translation.

The worst one by far is for “What we do in the shadows” - “Реальные упыри”, which literally translates to “Real ghouls”, and it sounds abysmal in Russian. I first thought it was some shitty parody like vampires suck or meet the Spartans, so I didn’t go to see it in cinema, but it turned out to be one of the most hilarious comedies I’ve seen

In Serbian, Easy Rider used to be translated as "Goli u sedlu", meaning "Naked in the saddle". Sounds like a porno.
Talking about "Capitain America: The First Avenger"
They not only deleted "Capitain America" from the name, but they also translated all the Capitain America movies as "First Avenger"
So for example, "Capitain America: The Winter Soldier" become "Первый Мститель: Другая Война", which means "First Avenger: The Another War"
Then the third movie, "Capitain America: Civil War" was translated as "Первый Мститель: Противостояние", which means "First Avenger: Confrontation" or something like this, and that's just doesn't make any fucking sense

The Die Hard one is actually often mentioned as one of the best Russian title translations. 'Tough nut' (Крепкий орешек) is a common expression in Russian, which describes a stoic person who's hard to beat, so I don't really see the problem here.

Yeah, that's a good one. But the problem is with the next movies which are called "Die Harder", "Die Hard with a Vengeance", "Live Free or Die Hard", "A Good Day to Die Hard". In Russia, they're all just "Крепкий орешек 2", "Крепкий орешек 3", etc. They should've been more creative, I think.

In France, "Die Hard" is "Piège de Cristal", which means "Crystal trap", so that looks the same and it makes sense. But then, with the sequels, they all have different names and it was very confusing. The titles were modified later to "Die Hard 1 : Piège de cristal" and so on... That's a bit stupid. Also considering that we did not got the "Die Hard" play on words they did in every original title...

@@JoaoOstroski420 In the US they were probably too scared to use "Rapunzel" lest no one would come to watch a princess movie except girls. In Russia, it was marketed as Rapunzel (well, with a subtitle "tangled story").
This is actually the answer to why there are ridiculous made up translations of some titles. The movie companies mostly care about money; as long as the title is short, not completely forgettable and attracts more audiences, they are happy. E.g., "The Mysterious Disappearance of Sen and Chihiro" was not probably what English speaking kids (or their parents) would come to watch.

In Brazilian Portuguese "The Godfather" is translated into "O Poderoso Chefão" or "The Mighty Big Boss" which actually sounds great in portuguese
It is a pretty bad ass name, we sometimes do it better than the original, like "curtindo a vida adoidado" (en literal translation: enjoying the hell out of life) was the translation for "ferris bueller's day off" (ptbr literal translation: dia de folga do ferris bueller)
To foreigners, the -ão ending can make most things sound cool. We need a similar way of representing the big/great/etc in English.
Not really, it doesn't sound great because the title is supposed to be in English. It just sounds like a Brazilian bootleg where you have favela gangs instead of classic mafia.

Well in Lithuania they didn't even bother to translate 'Die Hard' from English to Lithuanian, they just took Russian translation (Hard Nut) and translated it to Lithuanian. I never understood why is that, thanks for enlightening me
Hard nut has a similar meaning to Die Hard when referencing a person. It also means someone that's determined/ hard to break (hence the hard part of the nut)

In Russia we translated "The Shawshank Redemption" as "Escape from Shawshank" which literally is spoiler.
In Russia, "The Fast and the Furious" movies are translated as "The Afterburner" (Форсаж / Forsazh), and though the movies have nothing to do with supersonic aircraft (at least not the first ones), it sounds pretty badass in Russian. The titles are pretty consistent, too. Just look at this NONSENSE Universal comes up with every F&F movie. "Fate of the Furious", man.. how the fuck did we end up here?

@@SHADOW17018 That's a good point but the thing is "Hard/Tough Nut" is already a Russian idiom, it's slang roughly meaning someone who is a hard bitten stoic survivor that puts up a fight, so that in itself is actually all around a perfect translation specifically for Russian, I guess Roman just didn't pick up. However, as far as I know, that idiom does not exist in Mongolian, so they take it literally, in which case it means nothing and is really weird, which is about as shitty a translation I can think of haha.

@@akeshiba it depends. in "another war", "another" means something like "another one" (like if there was a first one, then it would a second one, or third and so on), while "different" means "other kind", like when solid snake said that "war has changed". anyway it's kinda pointless to argue a correct translation of russian title translated from english

@@akeshiba it can. "another" and "different" are synonyms after all, but they have primary meanings. "другой (другая)" translates from russian as "other", "another", "different" and so on, but russians use it as "different", a more accurate translation of "another" to russian and vice versa is "еще одна". but i guess it wouldn't sound as cool or apropriate
In Georgian they translated "Inception" as "The Beginning" as well. They probably copied the name from Russians cause "Die Hard" is also translated as "The Hard Nut".
In Latin America they translated it as "El Origen", which means "The Origin". Kinda the same.

The worst example of russian title translations is "what we do in the shadows" movie. They had translated it as "The Real Ghouls", which sounds like something gopnik-related for a Russian person.
Like real gangsta.
Yeah I remember this one. Реальные упыри . Some sites have it better as Чем мы занимаемся в тени which is much better.
Thay used to do that in Poland as well, my favourite is Dirty Dancing which was translated into "Wirujący Seks" which literally means "spinning sex" 😂😂😂
In Spain, Die Hard was translated as "La Jungla de Cristal", wich means "The crystal jungle". Russian translations seems to be actually pretty average.

There are Finnish translations of movies i had no idea i thought it was like my country where they don't translate anything apart from some kids movies.

In Poland Die Hard is also a famous case. It is translated as Szklana Pułapka, which means 'Glass Trap'. I usually kind of defend this translation and point out that Die Hard is very hard to translate smoothly due to its double meaning and an actual lack of 'proper' words in Polish for both of them. However the bad thing is, 'Glass Trap' makes sense only for the first movie. But then there are sequels which are also 'Glass Traps'.
In Estonia “Die Hard” is translated as “Persevering Soul” or alternatively “Tenacious Soul” (Visa Hing)
In Finland, the Big Bang Theory is wierdly translated as 'Rillit Huurussa', meaning 'Eye Glasses in Steam'
Translated show names do this somewhat often here and it's wierd sometimes

The "horny translation" use to happen in French too because companies from France own the right to 98% of movies in the French part of Europe. (Dunno if they still do,only watch movies in English. Since theatre play them in English in my country and don't watch TV anymore). Many movies had "sex" or "sexy" in the name. Also French title translations in general are pretty cheesy.
In Italian the film "hangover" is called "Una Notte da Leoni" wich literally means "A Lion Night"
It would have been far funnier if Die Hard had been translated to "Die Erect" in Russian I would have fell off my bed laughing....
They translated "Sinister" to "Синистер", which is basically a transliteration from English to Russian. The same was done for "Suspiria" (Суспирия).
And M. Night Shyamalan's "Split". There is a simple direct russian translation for it, which is "расщепление" (rasshepleniye), which means exactly that: multiple minds of the main character. But no, the smartasses decided not to translate at all this time but transliterate, and here you go: "Cплит". It's a croatian Adriatic see resort town, goddammit
