Love how Robbie describe Rick's vocal and acknowledge his charm. Rick is definitely my favorite singer from The Band, and Rick and Robbie my 2 favorites from the Band, probably my favorite rock and roll stars, along with Jim Morrison.
The music that was written in that house was just a bunch of guys be honest, playing with their hearts and souls without any egos! Taking their skills, and applying it as it should be...devotion,and honesty!
Great interview but a horrible ending... I really would've liked to hear the rest of what he was taking about... Those were great records! Got a part two to this?
Yes, of course, Robbie, when big pink came out it WAS from some different planet, from some higher spiritual plane....superb melodies, well played chorus and harmony and actual musicians , not some techno track and trendy stuff
I only got halfway through. It's all very pleasant, but I was hoping he would talk about the music. It's all generalities. I wish the interviewer had asked him some more specific questions.
From his home in Woodstock, New York, the amiable Canadian also expressed his desire to make an album with Keith Richards, explained why he took a long hiatus from recording, and offered some less-than-flattering observations on old Bandmate Robbie Robertson. MATTHEW LEWIS: Rick, on the new album, I really like your version of Twilight. Why did you pick that particular old Robbie Robertson song to record? RICK DANKO: I hate to say this, but it's as much of a Rick Danko song as it is a Robbie Robertson song. I just forgot to seek (credit). Robbie was very tight with sharing those responsibilities. That's why he's where he is, and that's why we are where we are, to make a long story short... He'll say he did it all, if you give him the opportunity, MATTHEW: Are there a lot of old Band songs that you feel you should have been credited on? RICK: I feel that way about the whole band. Especially the music. A lot of them stories, Levon (Helm, Band singer and drummer) told a lot of great stories that we worked in the lyrics for songs. But that's behind us. I feel much the way Mike Love (of the Beach Boys) feels. (Love sued bandmate Brian Wilson for denying him songwriting credits.) Maybe I'll have to end up hiring his lawyer (laughs). MATTHEW: What's your relationship with Robbie these days? RICK: I don't really speak to him or see him that much. He's hanging out in that Armani crowd, I guess, wearing them Armani suits. Well, at least if you read Robertson's book, apparently Danko, Helm, and Manual had some pretty serious drug problems that basically killed The Band -- and eventually contributed to their deaths. Someone had to run the show, until it became too much. Robertson wrote a lot about how much he valued collaboration with the entire group, that he didn't want to be the leader, and that he felt somewhat betrayed by the other guys' getting strung out on heroin. I can sense the bitterness in Danko's comment. Maybe some of it is justified -- we don't really know, do we? I love Danko's voice and musicianship, and am saddened by his inability to kick the habit and live a long, healthy and prosperous life. I guess we shouldn't be too surprised. All of those guys left home and went on the road in their teens. Maybe not the best way to grow up.
Robbie address that in his book, he was a teen ager playing with Ronnie Hawkins, and when they played for a young crowd, perhaps some kind of graduation ball, he realized he was missing out on something. In his biography of The Band, Barney Hoskyns contemplate that perhaps Robbie's later wild days (when for a period he lived with Martin Scorsese, and they did a lot of cocaine) was a delayed rebellion. Robbie's mother divorced Robbie stepfather when Robbie was 13 I think, he had been physically abusive to both Robbie and his mother. Money was always a bit of a problem so Robbie worked after school, and joined the Hawks when he was 16, so not much of a teenage experience. Levon was a few older than Robbie, and became almost of like an older brother, but they were doing more adult stuff than teen age stuff back then.@@silphium5510
they where anti-hippi, nonsense real player's playing, composition ' all things that attracts people who love music, I've been in the drive way at that pink house, after Levon ' funeral I coul d see were it could happen, wonderful place
That is pretty much it, read Barney Hoskyns biograhpy of The Band, he is plenty critical of Robbie, but Robbie wrote the songs, and they ALL made a lot of money.@@kevinjoseph517

Robbie is in his early sixties there, of course he not as good looking like he was when younger, but his smile still lights up the whole room.

Home Cooking could have been on the Best Of The Band.... a gem...

You have been listening to Levon's take on things too much.
You obviously did not listen to the interview, Robbie has plenty of praise for both Garth and Levon.
Interviewer sounds like Judd Apatow
