  • This Adventure is a Colorado Classic Ridge Hike & Scramble on the Enormous and Technical Ellingwood Ridge Route leading to the Summit of La Plata Peak, 14,360' in the Sawatch Mountains. Class 3 climbing skills are required at a minimum with good route finding skills also being imperative.
The hike begins at a pullout on the South side of Independence Pass Rd. on the Leadville side of the pass, east of the pass propper. Route finding for the lower section is difficult with dense forest on steep terrain with several confusing social trails created by lost climbers wandering in the dark hours before dawn though there are a few helpful cairns! An early start is imperative due to the length and commitment of the route to the 14er Summit.
The ridge itself presents many options from higher traverses near the ridge proper with generally more technical sections to lower traverses on the east side of the ridge with generally fewer rock climbing challenges. Route finding and rock climbing skills greatly improve the level of safety, exertion and time needed to complete the route. This is not a route for novice mountaineers. The route is roughly 10 miles and 6,000 feet of vertical gain on off trail terrain. Exact distances vary depending on the particular route taken. Best to plan for some back tracking to due to plenty of opportunities to cliff out on the many towers studding the ridge!

Thanks Aamon, always a pleasure to hear from you. This ridge is just a monster, really like a couple 13ers leading to the 14er. So glad you're checking out some earlier videos, if you have not already, the San Juan Mountain Adventures, like Vermillion peak, Ulysses Grant are some of my favorites. A really amazing place. Cheers!

I was up there a couple weeks ago, via standard route. We stared at that ridge thinking how crazy it looks. Awesome content as always!

It was cool, definitely the long way. In a "dawson" book I have it is mentioned to climb out of that central basin and onto the ridge about mid way to a low point up a gully of your choosing. I considered doing that but decided iI should do it all for the video. . . The gullies did look loose as I inspected them from the ridge above but, may well be a nice option if you can pick a decent line up one of them??? The Upper ridge was definitely the highlight for me and the lower approach section below tree line was , as mentioned, was a jungle PITA!

This is a fantastic video. Beautiful shots, well paced, and well edited. Tons of great information. I'd never even heard of Ellingwood Ridge, and now it feels like something that has to be done. Great inspiration!

@@KarlDeckerPresents I didn't think you were so much in climbing 14ers, but you tackled quite a few this summer. I have been researching lately and found bunch of 14er alpine routes that I didn't know existed would love to tackle some of those with you.

Nice climb Karl. No drone in this one if I’m correct? Even so, beautifully shot & edited.

It was epic but yea, no drone in the Wilderness area. . . Big bummer for me, ripping a slalom course through those towers would have be super rad! Hope all is well with you and your brother!
