    brilliant...solemnity must be maintained. It is Calvary made ananmesis at Mass. This must be respected in the music that is played at Mass

    The comment was a broad generalization about the United States of America (which has millions and millions of people) and did not add to the debate which is very narrow: what does the Church desire Re: music at Mass.

    I also agree with you, Pedro Chaves!
    "W: In 1967, the Catholic Church officially stated that those instruments which are, BY COMMON OPINION AND USE, suitable for secular music only, are to be altogether prohibited from every liturgical celebration and from popular devotions."
    Now that is sooo gray.

    Psalm 150 from the New American Bible States:
    Give praise with blasts upon the horn, praise him with harp and lyre.
    Give praise with tambourines and dance, praise him with flutes and strings.
    Give praise with crashing cymbals, praise him with sounding cymbals.
    Let everything that has breath give praise to the LORD! Hallelujah!
    Amen!!!

    The teachings of the Church about music at Mass are not in conflict with this. However, the instruments you cite were not the same 4,000 years ago as in the year 2013.

      That.... overstates things somewhat. A tambourine was essentially the same, as were flutes, and even stringed instruments operated on the same acoustic principles - the descendants of lyres and harps of today are far more musical and melodious than their ancestors were.

    I work with college students on a daily basis and find that many of them are completely turned off to the Mass when the organ is turned on. I'm not saying that I don't enjoy hearing the organ, but I believe that there needs to be a variety. God does not favor just the organ or Gregorian Chant. We should praise God with our voices, guitars, pianos and tambourines!

      Pedro Chavez Every Mass that I ever attended that was the Traditional Latin Mass and the had Gregorian chant was always extremely well attended. Not only that, parishes that had these Masses always produced huge numbers of conversions, vocations, and long lines at Confession.

    You can quote popes all you want, but one of the biggest complaints I hear from my Catholic, and formally-Catholic friends is that the music at Mass is boring, hard to sing, and old-fashioned. Contemporary styles of music, like rock, can be inspiring, worshipful, and meditative. As soon as my parish switched to contemporary music, the attendance trippled! With all due respect, I think the leaders of the Church are totally out of touch. Gregorian chant and organ music...get real.

      hughbe40 Attendance at your parish tripled---for how long? Loud guitars and electric drums do not lead to deep or ongoing devotion from the people.

    At St. Martin dePorres in Yorba Linda there is an insane amount of music on the piano and guitar. In fact, there is more music than Liturgy. I want to hear the priest not muscians.

    I am a Music Director for a Catholic Church and I think that this video is an example of how closed minded certain Catholics can be. Any music played appropriately can be Liturgical. Please note that I said played appropriately!

    • @georgepenton6023
      @georgepenton6023 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pedro Chavez You're living in a dream world. Since the Church abandoned the Latin Mass and Gregorian chant Mass attendance has declined by about 67%. Parishes who have these things are vibrant and flourishing; those that do not are mediocre, boring, declining, and dormant.

  • @guitarsaiyan
    @guitarsaiyan 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bahaha! soo, no instrument nor voices should be allowed in church?! who is anyone to say what instruments are only suitable for secular music. there's violins and choirs in secular music too.
    these digs on secular music are only attacking a back beat drum set and an electric guitar.

  • @josemariademanila677

    The video highlights one very important fact about the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, i.e. just as Jesus Christ felt uneasy about the cup he was about to drink, just as the execution at Golgotha was not really entertaining, ergo the Holy Mass is NOT an Entertainment. It is in fact the re-Offering, not a Repetition of the Eternal Merits of the one and the same Holy and Bloody Sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross in an Unbloody manner.
    Ergo, the Sacred Liturgy and all its components, including the Sacred Music should focus ONLY on the One Single Sacrifice that Jesus gave for us all. Not at all for Entertainment!
    Moreover, it is best that Musica Sacra be distinct both in form and substance from secular music so that it actually reminds us that when we are in the Mass, we are not of this world.
