They video is so much better. Meatloaf really shows off his voice in it. His album Bat out of Hell has one hit after another. You won't regret checking it out. Meatloaf is very theatrical. And he kills it every time

I've always taken the phrase "glowing like the metal on the edge of a knife" in this song to represent the feeling of fascination and allure of something they knew was dangerous.

I love watching people who have never seen Meatloaf react to this song. In the early portions, it is clear that they have no idea what they are in for. And seeing their realization of just what they are experiencing brings back so many memories of what it was like to watch this on stage 35 years ago.

Musicians were betters in the 60s 70s and 80s in my opinion. No autotune, and played their own instruments. They did it every night on stage with great passion. I think a big difference between then and now it wasn’t as money driven. They seemed to do it for the love of music The great thing about their live performances was every night they were different. Something always seemed to happen that they hadn’t done before. God bless, rest in peace Meatloaf.

Take a look at the lyrics. At the end of their little vocal battle he says he couldn’t take it any longer and started swearing to God and on his mama’s grave that he would love her until the end of time. Then they both go straight into Now I’m praying for the end of time, so I can end my time with you.
Meatloaf was a serious musical theater lover and his songs, shows and videos very clearly exhibit that fact.

Dave here. This is a shocker. I like the video better that shows the baseball clip. The key is Jim Steinman's genius. (he's the piano player. Can you guess he writes musicals? lol). Has many more but my fave is 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Amazing lyrics and the usual outstanding, theatrical Meatloaf performance. This is a great rabbit hole. Enjoy.

There are other videos of this song when he's younger & less 'medicated!
Normally he's closer to pitch-perfect, which he is not here IMHO...
I'm glad that you're enjoying this, but this ROCK OPERA rendition is not the best rendition/performance...Hope you can find the original.
Meatloaf is such an amazing performer, I agree. ("Bat out of Hell!") Carla, frankly, was amazing & knew how to manage

My then High School girlfriend and I were in my car listening to this IRL. Everything was the same except we didn't get married so didn't have to deal with that. We're still FB friends.
His real name was Marvin Lee Aday.😇 He got his nickname (which was legally changed) by his dad when he played football in High School.
He had many movie appearances over the years. Including but not limited to "Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Fight Club".
Btw they were BOTH regretting their commitment to each other.
This song was written by the late Jim Steinman 😇He also played keyboard on this song.
I wish I could have seen them in concert but sadly it never happened. 🙄
I still have the "Bat out of hell" LP
PS: EVERYTHING was better in the 70s and 80s.😎

Every time I hear this song, it brings back a memory of being home alone. When this song came on, I of course turned the volume to maximum. When it got to the middle part, I didn't hear my parents come home. My father stormed into my room with many inappropriate words. He said if be ever heard me listening to that "filthy song" again, I wouldn't be able to sit down for a month. After that, I used headphones. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Meatloaf and Queen are rock opera giants.

I just love watching a new generation fall down the rabbit hole that is a meatloaf concert. You need to check out so many more songs. My personal fave is 2 out 3 aint' bad {a rock ballad} and his duet with Cher in the 80s is an unknown gem.
Meatloaf literally left it all on the stage - most shows saw him on oxygen at the end backstage.
His voice is insane and I miss him so greatly but he gave me some of the best memories. Being 50 now this song was a staple in the car on cruise nights and then later was a keroke staple. This and rumors (fleetwood mac) were the first 2 album i ever purchase because my father (who to this day collects vinyl) said i was ruining his records by playing them too much (so he went and got me my own copies, lol)
I've just found your channel and am looking forward to watching your back catelogue.

Holy sh*t- I've never seen this early version of their performance-it is pure genius, talented musicianship, and very comical-thoroughly entertaining!
I first heard this album via my Aunt Vickie (RIP) as a very young teenager in the late 80s-then, in the 90s, he came out with the song "I'd Do Anything for Love."
He also played the character Robert "Bob" Paulsen in the cult classic movie Fight Club, starring Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto, and, of course, Meatloaf. The movie also features music by The Pixies.
I've always thought he was such an incredibly talented man!

Okay, the woman in the video is Karla Devito (Robbie Benson's wife) and she is actually lip syncing on the video very well by the way, the true singer is Ellen Foley who went to acting and appeared on Night court for the first season as the blonde defense attorney. This is rock theater is what this video is. Multiple acts telling a story arc. Were musicians better in the 70's? For the most part yes.

Wasn't the video I've seen before & love. In my opinion, the other video to this song is so much better & hilarious. 😂

It's not too difficult to determine what "Paradise" is a euphemism for that he can somewhat see at the tender age of 17 due to the glow of the dashboard lights while he and his girlfriend were parking out by a lake one night. "Parking" is what we did back in the day before the advent of "hooking" up via some electronic device like they do today. The baseball analogy is about guys getting either to 1st, 2nd, 3rd base(s) or a home run (all the way) during these parking encounters. This is all based upon personal experience; I'm now an old man..LOL

This is what true performers did on stage without the crutches of technology. They’d act out the songs. Such intensity. And yes, musicians had to rely on talent and not technology. So they were better.
