us fly fishermen get such bad flack for being "elitist." Have they met Brian Flechsig? He's the everyday mans, every day man. With an extraordinary capacity for fly fishing.
Hi Brian, big thanks for all you do to help people learn how to fly fish! I’m new to fly fishing and was having some trouble getting fish on the hook. I’m happy to report I just watched this video over lunch and after while out fishing was able to land three brown trout in Scotland!! My first ever. Many thanks!!
I know you don’t read the comments Brian but your tuition is absolute gold, I have learned so much about the important fundamentals and I’ve only just taken up fishing, thank you
Just upped my fly fishing game exponentially! Been fly fishing for 6 months and been setting the hook wrong for 6 months! No more thanks to this Awesome video. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I had my worst day fishing yesterday. It wasn’t just that I got skunked on a productive stretch, it was that I missed 15 or so good hits due to shabby sets. This video answered all my questions. Gonna be a game changer 🤙🏻
Mad props to mad river for delivering grammatical corrections in social media. Too many of our outlets are permissive of low brow content to satisfy their viewership and avoid any backlash. Don't let our sportsmen prefer grabbing catfish and avoiding punctuation to engaging with nature and human interaction.
Finally got this rhythm of getting set up for a proper hook set. C(M)FP Cast Mend (as needed) Finger - get that line under the rod finger!! Point - point the rod at the fly More to the point of the vid, my hook sets are no longer ripping lips off and losing any fish. They and I are most grateful for the new technique!
The very first piece of advice is already beneficial. Today on all five of the strikes I had the line in my left hand and not underneath my right index finger. Thanks for producing this !!!
Looks like I'll never get that hat and fly box. Whenever I have a question, I come on YT only to find out y'all already have a video on that very topic! But that information is worth well more than the swag. Much appreciated!
So glad I saw this. Now I know I've been doing it wrong . Missed a bunch of hits on a dry this weekend. I knew it was my inexperience and maybe now I can change that....,Thanks Brian
These videos are outstanding… thank you guys. Watched the entire beginner series, bought my first setup and hooked into a fish my first outing. Now I’m here learning how to keep them on.. you guys are great! Thank you!
I have yet to cast a fly but watching these videos I'll be full of information when I start practicing. Thank you for these valuable instructional videos.
Really appreciate the advice on hook sets. Certain the fish will appreciated it as well. Quite a number of lip-less trout here abouts since I've either missed the strike completely or ripped the lips off my fish. Thanks, folks.
your videos are most helpful and I have taken fly fishing up due to them, thank you. to chime in on this video, a rod maker recommends that you do not raise or bend the rod more than 45 degrees when fishing, they state that this is the most cause of broken rods and is the users fault, but they replace them anyway.
This video couldnt have come out at a more perfect time! Missed a few bass yesterday while out due to poor hook sets and this helps out a ton. Thank you and keep up the great work!
@@Madriveroutfitters Went back out again today and couldnt stop bringing in the crappie and panfish! Made sure to use the techniques and that helped a ton!
I just received my first fly reel from your online store, the new Reddington run its simple clean and sealed drag system. Now educated on the angle of witch to hook all the cutthroat that strike.
I really appreciate all the time and great info you guys have given me. I watch all your videos and have really learned a lot from them. You might have to do a second series on punctuation to help out with future questions lol. Keep up with the great videos Brian !
Thanks for watching and we are happy to help. Fly fishing channel though, no grammar lessons here. Brian doesn't really have room to talk to be honest.
Setting the hook is so important! For kicks and giggles I got into Micro fishing. Often we can see those little guys hit the hooks. You would be amazed at how fast they can spit the hook out. I use very micro flies and or a single grain of rice.
If I had a dollar for every fish I missed because of a bad hook set I’d be retired by now! But I recommend someone on the MRO team setting up a social media account. It makes it a lot easier to share shop info or advertise your website!
We've been on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for many years. 71,126 friends on Facebook for example. See the "Connect" tab on our website for the links. Brian just doesn't go there, that's all.
Great video Brian!!!! How about still water fishing???? Should the hook set still be below 2 and 10???? Thanks.( Wanted to make sure I didn't miss any punctuation...)
🤔salmon fisher men in the UK tend to either leave a bit of slack or fish of the reel probably the only fish we do this for all others yep under the finger 😊
@@Madriveroutfitters . My question is how do I know if I have a bite if I’m fishing on a boat. I watched your video and you said hold the line and when I feel a bite pull to the side to set the hook. I’m new to fishing but I love it.
Great info was actually just thinking about this, on another note was wondering if could do tying video on swimming jimmy, you guys talk about this fly alot, and also can you fish it with floating line if cant afford sink tips, and when fishing it how do you work the fly, aka stripping it in, also if are still missing the fish when fly fishing and have your finger already on line like you said, then what could i be doing wrong, am i not setting the hook quick enough, aka putting rod tip to side, or do you tug line as put rod tip to side to set hook, also i usually do not fish in stream with current , usually its pond and no stream,i am pretty decent at fly tying everyone says looks better than the flys they buy, but suck at fly fishing cannot seem to catch anything but tiny pan fish, which are the easiest to catch anyways
He does have a few on how he fishes it. Check a smallmouth video from a few months ago. Please send any further questions or requests over to the shop via e-mail. As suggested. Or call.
As much as i keep telling me these tips ( strip set! Rod to the side) i keep loosing fish because my instinct is too pull the rod up hard when i see/feel a strike, is what i been doing for years im new to fly fishing.. .. lost 3 fish today. Went skunked! could not hook one!! i know i will get it but is so hard to fight that reaction is my problem
My question is if the fish is downstream from you on a river, how do you set it downstream? Now I lift if the fish is downstream but that does not seem to work well. Any advice?
You say don't set the hook by lifting up. But when you watch bass pros with conventional tackle they seem to pop their rods straight up? Of course with all those treble hooks they can impale fish anyway they set.
Great vid! I was just teaching my son this weekend to fight the fish with the rod tip up. I guess we'll sit down tonight and i'll show him this video while I eat my crow. Oops!
