Really useful video, thanks coach, broke down a lot of things I'd been looking for! I was just wondering how you'd adjust your shield punt when the ball is backed up within your own 5, would you condense the 7 yards from front line to shield as well as the 7 from shield to punter? Or would you prioritise one of the 2?
Should would certainly move up a little and the punter as well if we are truly backed up. The distance between the shield and punter is a huge part of the scheme being successful
Coach Mac you are awesome, coach Mac or anyone clarify if the punt block personnel is not on your shoulder but head up in the base punt shield formation what is the best technique used for engagement. Are we still using a drop step on a head up player for our Guards, tackles etc. Also the LM and RM are they influencing outside or inside.
We dropped and ran vs all looks in base shield punt. Always had a change up scheme to handle any issues created by that technique like a rugby punt deal. Keep it as simple as possible considering punt team doesn't get as many reps as offense or defense
Coach, do you always block the 3 widest defenders? Even if the line up with 6 players to one side - with an additional player at the B or C-gap? Or what happens if the put two the defender in the B AND the C Gap and just one A-Gap player? Thanks
With Shield stuff we always work to the widest, and we also rugby punt and change the launch spot of the punt. So if we are getting 4 on the shield from inside we could rugby and block the inside guys down and use the shield to escort the punter on the rugby.
2 in each A gap, 4 on the shield. But your guards and tackles have to understand how to redirect their men for 2 steps as well. If your operating time is 1.9 or better you will have very few problems.
Great work, explanation was very clear and easily understandable.

Coach: At what point do you knock block the widest guy? How far outside of the TE would you not count him?
Depends on our operating time snap to foot

Coach are they blocking for 2 seconds or 2 steps?
We redirect for 2 steps
Coach, what in your opinion gives Shield punt the most difficulty? Pressure up the gut?
