  • I interview people in New York City by guessing how much do people pay in rent to live in New York City! I ask questions like "what do you do for a living?", "what do you love about NYC?", and "why did you move to New York?" Responses were interesting... :0

    I feel like commenters thinking that certain people are "bragging" about how much they pay in rent in the video. Don't truly understand what it's like to live and rent in NY. The people smiling when they say a high number aren't smiling because they're happy, we smile because we know the amount is batshit insane for what we're getting 🤣. We KNOW the rent is too damn high, but we also know that if we want to live in NY we also have no other choice unfortunately. No one "brags" about rental prices in New York (unless you're RICH). You only brag if you get great amenities with the price. We all just chuckle through the absurdity.

      Hey it is tougher than ever with inflation AND RISING RENTS and interest rates rising, but, the best thing you can do is live below your means and save, investing a few hundred a month into diversified index funds (ETFs work) to gain long-term compound interest. The goal is to get a down payment to buy a property that enables you to hold onto your equity and grow wealth. Credit score focus is critical.

    Being born and raised in NYC I've discovered that it's way overpriced for what you get (no surprise there, I know), but I didn't realize it until I got older. The city definitely appeals to the younger crowd with the exception of old timers that want to stay, more power to them. Now that I'm in my mid 30's I grew weary of the city and paying rent. But to see this video and put it into perspective, my house mortgage is in the range of some of these peoples rent, and I'm getting 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a basement, attic, backyard and garage... lets not forget about the property I own. Plus I don't have to deal with any noise or crime. To each its own, I get it. But some people need to get out and move to the suburbs at some point. You get a lot more!

      @deenice9169 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      agree 100%
      Born and raised in NYC as well. Saw myself there my whole life til I went to TX.
      After being here I realized the city is not worth it. It’s fun, diverse, walkable, full of thrill. But even a decent job like NYPD ($43,000 a year) can’t afford an apartment in the city. Not worth it

    • @ykx777
      @ykx777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      @kqatsi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      "You get a lot more!" It depends what you mean by "more." If you're talking about the size and amenities in your home, you're absolutely right. But, in many other ways, the suburbs also offer a lot less than NYC-museums, concerts, galleries, restaurants, diversity of experience, diversity of people, public transit, etc. Those things aren't accessible to all people, because you need money to eat out and go to concerts and so forth, but it's here. Many people would trade a smaller, more expensive home for everything else this city offers. I was raised in the Midwest, moved to NYC in my 20s, and am now in my 30s (with two kids), and I don't plan on leaving NYC.

    • @deenice9169
      @deenice9169 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@ykx777 that’s exactly my point tho. In many places like TX for example, 43k a year starting is REALLY good and you can be well off with that. Whereas in NYC, it’s basically not enough to even afford rent since a good 1 bedroom can cost up to $1800 a month. The problem isn’t that they pay too little in NYC, the problem is that it’s just over priced and not worth the price.
      Like where I am, you can find apartments or even nice trailers for rent at about $400-$900. So here, it’s easier for a young person to become independent (get a car, first apartment, etc) whereas in NYC, it’s just not affordable at all.

    We recently moved out of NYC due to a work transfer. While there, we lived in Queens, the city, and Brooklyn. Our rent was pretty consistent throughout - about $4,200 (which included utilities). And our most expensive piece of furniture is our bed which is adjustable and even vibrates. I think that cost about $2,300. Our sofa was just a little cheaper. Everything else is cheap but you get what you pay for with beds and sofas. (I am hoping to transfer back to either NYC or Boston in a few years and then we will just purchase an apartment instead of renting.)

    Living in Hong Kong myself and I was surprised how low the rents are in NYC. If you walk around an affluent area in HK asking the same thing you would not find anyone saying less than 2k usd and you bump into a number of people saying 5-8k for a 1000 sq ft flat

      also live in in hk my brotha rent brutal over here... head over to repulse bay beach and it quickly gets to 20-30K+ USD a month for 3,000 sq ft or 4 bedroom flat. I even have a family friend with rent at 50,000 USD a month 😳

      The majority of those people saying 2k are probably roommates with 3-4 people.
