  • Excerpts from "Mickelson and Wyrtzen: Organ and Piano Duets"
    (C) 1976 Singcord Records
    TRACKS:
    1. The Lord is My Light
    2. What Grace is This
    3. God So Loved the World
    4. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (three versions)
    5. No Greater Love
Paul Mickelson and Don Wyrtzen team up to give some of the best piano/organ duets I've ever heard. Paul, with his extensive orchestrating experience, leads in most of the songs while Don, who is a very poetic musician, fills in the gaps left by Paul quite nicely.
None of these recordings I post belong to me. I simply digitize record albums and post them on YT to preserve them as it's highly doubtful they'll ever be re-released.

Listening to these renditions of Christian hymns bring tears to my eyes...'cause one day my eyes shall behold Jesus face to face and will meet old friends who kept their faith and are now in heaven... what a day that will be. While here on earth, these hymns will remind me of my great hope. These are Scriptures in music. Thank you for making these available in TH-cam. You are doing a great service to many Christian believers and disciples of Jesus Christ of Nazareth! Beautiful!!!

My personal favorite, "What Grace Is This" starts at 03:48. This arrangement is so heartfelt and filled with emotion and love.

Wonderful music, sorely missed I would hear selections like this on KMBI, a great combination of musicians, piano, theatre organ and John W. Petersen's music, heaven on earth. Thank you for posting this.

These musicians really define these hymns with such power and majesty! It is really refreshing and uplifting to hear these arrangements every time! They play with such feeling that comes from within for which it is very evident to me. They truly make His Praise Glorious!!! Mark C.

The song that starts at about 4:00 is John W Peterson's lovely What Grace is This. Here are the words
    What Grace Is This
    Chorus
    What grace is this
    That brought my Savior down
    That made Him leave
    His glorious throne and crown
The One who made the earth the sky and sea
Who put the stars in ev'ry galaxy
What condescension O how can it be
What shame He suffered O what agony
And then the death He died
    For sinners crucified
    What grace is this
    What grace is this
    Verse 1
    Out from heaven's palaces
    Splendor filled and bright
Came the King and He came to bring
To the world new life and light
    Verse 2
O the boundless grace of God
    Seen in Christ the Lord
Greater than all the sin of man
    And it's freely now outpoured
    Verse 3
Like an ocean deep and wide
    Like the trackless sky
Is God's grace to a fallen race
    'Tis an infinite supply
    Verse 4
By His grace we're daily kept
    As we walk life's way
Some day we will our Savior see
    What a wondrous happy day

I totally forgot about this song. Our choir director use to sing it back in the 80's, o how I loved it, it was such a blessing and so moving. Thanks for the words.

Much appreciated, thanks! I have their book and the arrangements are challenging enough. I have had a great time with my Technics ensemble digital piano and, with sequencer, have played both parts, separately, and listened to the final result. Here, we have it, as it SHOULD be played.

That arrangement of No Greater Love is just astounding beyond words. Back in those days Sacred music and hymns were 2nd only to the preached word of God and the Gospel. Talking about setting the table.........wow!

I wish you would post the last five selections. I have the accompanying books that I acquired back in the early 80's and it's been fun to follow along as they play their own arrangements.

Kelly refers to - Mickelson Wyrtzen Organ Piano Duets by Singspiration Music Paperback. Wow Kelly, so cool they published this! It's certainly timeless. It puts me in the mind of David Rose arrangements, which I've grown fond of for some reason. I'm a well trained guitar player and play organ amateurish at best, but I developed a habit of rescuing the greatest old Conn, Wurlitzer, Hammond, Gulbransen, Thomas, Lowrey, Baldwin, Yamamha, Kuwai organs,...but never a Kimball organ, but would you believe Kimball made more models of organs than anyone else ( according to Jan Giradot's Electronic Organ List). I think it's my organ playing and Highway to Heaven reruns that got me into David Rose since he did the music for that series. Michelson is probably an even more skilled arranger than Rose. Oh' how I wish I'd payed attention more in music theory class in high school. lol

Does the jacket on the album say what organ this was recorded on? I’m very curious!!! What a great album! I’ve listened to it over and over already!

This was recorded at the Whitney Studio in Glendale CA. The studio’s main musical attraction was its 4 manual, 34 rank Robert Morton theatre organ. It was mostly a Morton with choice ranks from other builders. So more of a hybrid instrument. A VERY popular installation among professional organists in the theatre organ and gospel genres and the top recorded instrument over several labels including Capitol, Columbia, Disney, Word and Sacred records. Until recently with the building of Nathan Barr’s Wurlitzer equipped Bandrika Studio in LA, Whitney Studios was the last recording studio to have a big theatre organ in it. The facility was later known as MCA/Whitney and was used for the production of many pop/rock records in the 70s and 80s. You can even hear the big Morton on Billy Joel’s Captain Jack single!
