One writer likened the 8 - 0 Maryland start to Skeets Nehemiah spotting Jackie Gleason a few hurdles head start.

This was the second game in Dayton that day. The first game was the famous St Joseph upset of DePaul

      “You WERE . . . Dee Paul.”
Mark Aguirre’s no mas defense as that St. John’s player dribbled down the court . . . passed to the big white kid in the corner and SWISH . . .
DePaul fans in Dayton Arena in complete shock.

Lefty Driesell was quoted after this game saying "We got our fannies beat, If Indiana would have been playing the 76ers today, they would have beaten the 76ers". Pure dominance by IU.

Huge statement game. IU had closed strongly to win the Big 10, but how would they fare against a quality ACC opponent? Quite well, as it turned out 😊After this game- especially with the upset losses by DePaul and Kentucky, who otherwise would gone to the regional at Bloomington- IU was on a title march.

I don't recall that IU team being such good shooters. Isaiah and Wittman could always fill it up, but the 3's, 4's & 5's had nice touch from 15' in. Lefty had no chance in this game.

Kitchel was one of the best-shooting forwards Knight ever had. Tolbert and Turner took mostly high-percentage shots this game 😊

On paper, the teams were fairly even. Bob Knight vs. Lefty Driesell is a serious mismatch.

IU lost nine games that year. Most loses for an NCAA Champion until NC State beat Houston with 10 loses. IU averaged 23 points over their opponents which I think is still a NCAA record.
