Tony was a child genius, graduating from MIT age 16yo with degrees in mechanical engineering, engineering, chemistry, and I believe biophysics. hes taken his dads legacy and grew it to astronomical levels. he builds everything he uses, often from scraps or the ground-up.
I saw someone mention Stan Lee, also worth mentioning Jon Favreau, who was the director of this movie and who played Happy, Tony's Bodyguard. He's also the Director of Elf, and a major producer behind the Mandalorian which many people credit with saving Disney's star wars. He's a big creative influence that put a lot of heart into founding the MCU The other one people might mention is Kevin Feige - it's hard to quantify how important he was to all of Marvel being at minimum decent. He's the Eisenhower of Marvel, Producer, Diplomat, political player and beyond that loves the comics and is smart enough to maintain continuity.
I've always loved Marvel, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, cool that you're watching through it for the first time. You're in for a wild ride. The way I've always looked at the MCU is like a long-running episodic TV series where each movie is basically like an episode, mostly unrelated but usually has some returning characters or plot points or cool cameos, but like a TV show, when the season finale comes, everything you saw from each other episode, from each other movie, comes back and delivers some of the best moments in cinematic history. It's mind-blowing some of the attention to detail, there's things in these first few movies that I would never have thought about again but come back in one way or another, it's so cool. Edit: oh btw Tony's friend in this movie, Rhodey, the military guy who was waiting for him at the airplane, gets recast in Iron Man 2 as Don Cheadle, but in this movie was played by Terrance Howard. Just so you know, that'll be the same character even though it's two different actors.
