  • Sim racing has evolved massively over the course of the last 10 years in every aspect, from the hardware to the software and of course the community that surrounds it. To many people, sim racing is still nothing more than playing computer games, but you've only got to look at the sheer scale of the industry, and shows like to ADAC Simracing Expo in Germany to see it's a huge industry that's growing rapidly and particularly in the last few years, it's becoming more and more accepted by the masses as a legitimate alternative to real-world racing both for participants and spectators!
So in today's video, I wanted to take you through 5 reasons why sim racing is an awesome hobby to get in to for any automotive enthusiast or racer, and in many cases an awesome alternative to real-life racing for those who may not be able to get out on the track as often as they'd like. We'll finish up by summarising why I think 2020 is a particularly fantastic time to get involved!

Personally, it gives me something to focus on as I learn a practical skill I can apply in real life...vs going for kill streaks in COD. Also, to your point about racing any car on any track - after I spent quite a bit of time learning the Nords in the BMW via GT Sport, I pulled out the VR, selected a convertible car...think it might have been the KTM Oxbow, and slowly drove the course, just looking at things and soaking in the beauty of such a difficult course. (I forgot there was a castle off in the distance while driving down the straight of Döttinger Höhe as I was always so focused on the track lol). It was so beautiful it was like a religious experience to be able to take a car I'll never own around a track I'll never race. At that point I decided to further my sim library and build a PC/rig.

I got into sim racing a few months ago mostly because of a good deal on the G29 and I've fallen in love with it! It's something that's somewhat relaxing for me when learning new tracks and how to drive and also fills that competitive drive when I decide to race. Although I'm not that good so I just try not to die when racing

I think my favourite thing about sim racing is that it gives me a chance to enjoy driving without dealing with tedious things like bad drivers on the road and looking after your car.
I also love that it gives me the chance to drive cars I would otherwise never be able to drive.

Boosted Media Hi will I’ve been involved in sim racing since 2014 when I got my first wheel, i soon got enough money to buy a t300 and have had it since 2016, now I am only 13, but I have enough money to buy a new fanatec wheel, as I play on ps4 I will most likely be buying a ps5 for f1 2021 and I am waiting for confirmation of ps4 wheels compatibility with ps5, obviously mum is upset with the money that I want to spend on a new wheel plus the ps5, i am asking if you recommend buying a new wheel even if the ps4 wheels are compatible with ps5? This will be a good indication wether I should buy another one or not.

Very well said Will. For me VR and league racing/iracing flipped a switch from "I'm playing a game" to "This is real racing". Facing off against 20 like minded individuals that want to race hard but clean in a VR setup is an immense experience and gives me the same adreniline and emotional rush as a real track day/club race. I can still vividly remember my first league win and iracing win. To this day remembering those races gets the heartrate pumping.

    6. When you have a fantastic race... what a buzz ! Ive had atrocious results for last 10 races or so... with being taken out way too many times after months of really clean racing... and once on purpose out of frustration by 1 guy after the race finished he made sure I lost a bunch of SR because he could not get past me....... stepped away for a couple of weeks from it due to that... then see Road Atlanta with the Skippy - right back to it... first 2 races good position right up to last lap ... 2nd from last corner and an inexperienced guy takes me out in exactly the same way in 2 races on last lap... arghhhh!!!!! Then last night 1 more race 2nd split again - sure enough plenty of way way over aggressive drivers in split 2 - gave them plenty of room and within a couple of laps they were off... then Andreas Moor (thanks Andreas!) reminded me just how good it can get - great fight for about 5 laps - he pipped me in the end but I did not mind - great great close racing! Could not sleep for another hour as was smiling so much :)

Not really a sim but I have had two absolute mental races in F1 2019, defending for the last 12 laps from Bottas in career mode at Germany fully physically exhausted me. And I battled for pretty much an entire race with a friend who was incredibly similar in pace. It is amazing

I have one peice of advice for anyone looking into starting in sim racing. Find some kind of cockpit when you get your wheel, if you get your wheel home and just strap it to your coffee table, you'll very quickly find yourself wishing you had a cockpit, even if it's just a DIY cockpit. I have one made from pvc pipe.

i agree to 100% what you say that sim racing is absolutly great, but, i have made many many laps on the nordschleife in every game/sim, when i made my first rounds on the nordschleife last year in real life i was completly speechless 😍😍🤩 it was so unbelievable hard to drive on it, the up and downs, the g forces even in a road car, soo much turns where you can see nothing what comes behind the corner, .... no sim or video can bring that feeling how it is in real life, always when i drive too the nürburgring and i‘m seeing the first things from it, or i drive under the bridge too the grand prix course, my heart is pumping like hell and i begin too sweat 😂😂 so a legendary place, it is amazing. what it is too drive the first time on the nürburgring, you can see on jimmy broadbend reaction video last year 😅😅

Fun fact : I am competing in a drift competition tomorrow (SQDC drift) which is a big deal to all of us in Quebec, Canada (50 guys that gained acces to this competition after we passed our drift licencing event). It still a new series, but the player base is increasing drasticly. In fact, there is 2 profesionnal drivers from formula drift that joined us this season (2nd season). I'm now a sim racer because; my lungs are shot so just the air at the track would literally kill me, my bank account won't allow for a set of tyres or fuel for even one weekend of racing, I can't travel much anymore because of my health and there are no tracks where I live, maintaining even a basic mx5 track build would kill me physically and finacially, and finally I can enjoy everything motorsport has to offer without any of those drawbacks I've previosly mentioned. So I've bought me a full Fanatec Clubsport rig and some cheap (under$400) 50 inch screens and did't spend ten percent of the $80k that that it would take for a season of IRL racing, and I won't die! Big win IMHO.

The Rseat does have good reviews, however as Will says below it depends on your equipment. It is a great rig if you are using the "cheaper" belt driven wheels and pedals. But if you are instrested in going the direct drive route you are better off getting an 80/20 rig such as the GT1 Evo from SimLabs, which i think is quite similar in price to the Rseat.

I've spent more money for sim than my real car!!! 😂😂😂
Anyone who knows or owns the Thrustmaster Ferrari GTO vintage add-on wheel? Is there any way I can use it with my Fanatec dd base? Is there any hall pattern behind the Ferrari logo? I love that wheel, might even get it just to have it on my shelf!!!

Boosted Media you have my sincere apology for my previous post. I have no excuse.
As for the comments on my mental state, you are indeed correct, I suffer from PTSD, this not an
excuse for my previous post, just a statement of fact.
Again I apologise for my previous post.

What is this, "trying" sim racing? Given the investment required, you don't just "try" it, you "commit" to it!

Nope! If you have a game console you can spend $300 on ebay and try out the hobby then if you don't like it sell the stuff on ebay again, simple. I purchased a logitech g29 setup with stand and shifter for only $277 this past week and I'm sure if I wanted to sell it it'd be bought from me at the same price or higher. But it is true that if you start this hobby you will want to stay with it and thus spend mo money on lots of cool gadgets and software.
