The brilliant Ken Hutchinson. Thank you so much.

The myth of Nessus proved wonderful inspiration for this modern version. The conversation among the salesmen was perfect: who ever heard of a hero who didn't die young, who lived until plagued in old age with halitosis? Thank you for posting another excellent play. It and the others on your channel are welcome in my house.

Not a computer. It was one those machines that read plastic sheets with information on it. A viewer.

There was something special about Ken Hutchingson. He brought an understated intensity to TV that is usually captured in movies

    The acting superb really enjoyed
These plays the depth of the subjects
    Politacal or otherwise.
It puts to shame the garbage
    They put on now.

An excellent play. I didn't know the myth of Nessus, so the ending was unexpected. I'm way past all those sort of relationships, but human beings don't change so i assume it all still goes on. Relationships become traps - it's no ones fault really just that each individual changes so that the 2 people do not fit together any more when they thought they would fit forever.

The thought that crossed my mind after Eddie had half strangled his wife was: he's not going to earn nearly enough money working in a book shop to support his wife and family in the manner to which they've become accustomed? And she didn't seem the type to make noble sacrifices either.

Good to hear some lower middle class/a bit educated accents in a play set in Scotland, since most of them then were set in very poor working class areas and stories. Nothing wrong with that, i like those type of stories too. but Scotland is not just that, its a social and accent mix...

Quentin Tarentino makes real movies.... not TV shows shot mostly on videotape! And not that much anymore, since Quentin is mostly retired at this point. But if and when he makes another film, the only 1970s references in his films are from American exploitation films....not British TV dramas.

I feel no sympathy for the mistress. She should never had got involved with him. I'm sorry for the wife.
UPDATE: Having now watched the whole thing I believe the husband and wife deserve each other. The mistress made a mistake in getting involved with a married man but he wasn't worth dying for.
    Excellent!

    • @BroonParker

If this were real (which it isn't) it might be worth saying that no one should be worth taking your own life. Doesn't matter about the job or how good he was at it, does it?
I really hope that someone's suicide never touches you.

He's a 'chippy prole' - loads of them in those days; would have been happier on a building site, but the others on the site would've found him too mouthy. Actually, he reminds me of John Lennon, in a different life, even looks a bit like him.

I saw this on the side saying on next & for the date it just showed 12... the rest didnt show up and the quality looked old so I thought, oh this is 12 years old, *clicks* date: 12 Days Ago, I was shocked, but when was this film made?

    • @executivedecision6141
      @executivedecision6141  ปีที่แล้ว +7

This episode is from 1979 or 1980. Sometimes old is good! I was mostly a pre-teen when Play for Today was produced, and they didn't show this series here in the U.S. back then and they still don't.

@@vivienneandersson6019 It depends on the strength of the writing, acting, and if I can understand their accents! 😄 The episodes filmed in Scotland and Ireland are painful to listen to, and I can't get through an hour & 1/2.... so they're among the episodes I skip watching.

I used to get two and half gallons for a pound. A tenner to fill my Austin Champ which had a twenty gallon tank.
Its all relevant though,200 odd a month was considered a reasonable wage in those days.
No way would The M O D (Ministry of Defence as it then was),flog off a hundred grands worth of vehicle for a few hundred quid either. Changed Days Indeed !

A familiar tale yet still the characters held strong & were portrayed with vigor. Parts did seem to drag unnecessarily, but what annoyed me more was, twice I saw the overhead boom microphone. The actors put so much into their roles, the least the cameraman can do is keep the microphone out of view.
