Great performance by Gerard Kelly and his Doric/ Buchan accent was good too. A great loss he died so young

Excellent, these are certainly real gems with a moral in every one. A sad story that embraces the times.

Good god, Why do humans enjoy crushing that spark of life and individuality in folk, handicapped or not, the teachers or whatever they were came across as soul crushing miserable narcissists/psychopaths, and as for the girls parents, soul crushers.

All generated out of fear of what might happen. Playing things restrictively safe to the point where they prevent any development from happening, whether it be beneficial or not.

A beautiful story of people who used to be treated like nothing and I loved Sally's teacher and she was all for them staying together but after they went wondering off when the fett was going on and Sally's mum pulled her out and poor Donal at the end staring out of the window and not eating his lunch and I felt so sorry for him xxx

I saw that on TV about late seventies Donald and Sally have to be sixteen plus consenting adults and they are treated like they are six.

i think that father abusisng his daughter and the mother is angry to the daughter ive seen these signs in other films and dramas the daughter shrugs of her father then later because she is scared i think theres more going on in this film i no what school was like back then i was at a special school it was more leartning problems some of us didnt go home from school some went to a home and you here same old stories children disruption most children were ok but most parents and bad behaved teachers made it unbearable to cope

27:16 the kid gets upset after one slap and Donal just telling him he can’t grow cabbages. I don’t know if he has a disability or something though but I mean he really gets upset after that . It’s like the kid’s faking it

fantastic TV gem featuring both Sylvestra le Touzel (Catherine Cookson's The Gambling Man) and the late Gerard Kelly (Taggart, Brookside)

She was also in the excellent sf mini series The Univited (1997) and later in a political thriller Secret State. Great and underrated actress.

Donal lacks a father figure, sally has a father who is absent even as a husband. As in any family the real problem lies in the parents greatly void of love. I like Donal's mom. Good film.

I really feel like the teachers are really quite passed it and they’re literally controlling Donal and sally in a way too. They should just get use to modern society and pull their heads out of the sand.

You are looking at this film with 21 century eyes. Its how things were back when people where still working out the best way to handle these youngsters. Before that they were all locked up in mental asylums.

The fact that Donal is in a place for handicap people under that heading for him really I don’t think he’s properly handicap because I don’t see a problem with him really just having to deal with the frustration of not being able to see sally or that it’s to do sort of with a sexual frustration element to it but handicapped I don’t see the way that he is handicapped maybe though that he could be autistic or something but define,ty nowadays you wouldn’t say handicapped.
