I was just researching this as I'm looking to replace brakes on my truck. My understanding is, it used to be that with older brake pad technology, the bonding agents that hold the pad together could create a gas under intense heat. This gas would end up between the rotor and the pad, thus creating "brake fade". In short, I learned this is not as much as of an issue anymore since brake technology has improved. Several years ago, I put drilled and slotted rotors on my truck believing it was a performance upgrade (budget kit off Amazon), but probably just going to put flat AC Delco rotors back on with good pads as part of my front end rebuild for my Silverado. I agree with you. Max surface area. I'm not racing, but occasionally tow.

Thanks for watching! I need to post an update video. These Amazon special brakes he put on the Camaro are super noisy. I much prefer OEM equipment and parts.

Drilled rotors usually crack between the holes over time because they cool so quickly. Race cars use them but they get changed often.

drilled/slotted rotors what they do is prevent catastrophic brake failure by allowing your brakes vents to wisk away heat, you stop the same full rotors vs drilled/slotted rotors, you will however chew through brakes like nothing as all those holes and slots create depressions in the brake pad material
That said however you mentioned how you wanted "Full rotors for maximum braking power" when almost any braking system can easily fully lock up a wheel on any vehicle with a fraction of it's output force, most non boosted hydraulic brakes output well above 1000PSI let alone boost assisted braking and you can easily lock up brakes at around 500-700PSI, if you had enough weight in the back of the truck that even above 1000PSI the wheels are turning you would likely have the wheels disintegrating, let alone the wheels being ripped off their mounts
A better question for driving a work truck and what rotors you buy is "How much hill driving with a load will I be doing?" if it's rare keep the full rotors, if it's every day you're hauling stuff up and down hills you want the slotted/drilled rotors, keeping in mind you'll have to replace the brake pads more often yes with slotted/drilled rotors, but brake pads are cheaper to replace than entire trucks heading down a hill in an uncontrolled state

Thanks for commenting! Very good points and facts. Towing is a bit different than running one at the track for sure. I forgot to point out that at the track the drilled and slotted rotors can perform better when there are rapid and repeated heat cycles. Thanks for watching!

I have them on my Escalade for towing works great for brake fade and on my camaro that I drag race and changed them out every 5 years no issues you don't have to replace them unless you dig into them and rule of thumb you don't want to turn regular rotors your making them thin they will start to warp So you said a whle bunch of nothing

Ok let me set the record straight the only time you want drilled rotors no slots is on a car like mine BMW F90 M5 Comp.. 800HP 6 piston brakes. My rotors are the size of some wheels lol.
But the difference is the drilled rows are spaced very far apart and they don't drill to close to edge. Mine are 3/4" from edge 1/2 in between each hole and spaced 21/2 in apart that also flare.
The problem with the ones you son bought is they are prone to cracking because the holes are drilled to close to edge and each other. They don't improve performance at all!! In fact you loose performance!
F1 and most all race cars use solid rotors because you want to stop now! The way they get away with the heat factor is because Damm near half the wheel is brakes and they have air ducts just as I have ran straight in from the front of the car to my wheels cooling them. F1 the whole wheel is exposed so the brakes are getting air on both side to cool brakes. I actually think they still use a duct as well. Can't remember now but. Just like you said i want as much metal to grip.
People get ceramic pads because very low brake dust. On this setup it will also lose Performance.
The only way you gain performance with ceramic pads is to have ceramic rotors.
I about had a heart attack when I found out new ceramic pads and rotors was going to cost me almost 9,000.00 for my car. But I also track my car so anyway. But just becareful and make sure he beds the brake pads PROPER!

Drilled and slotted rotors actually perform slightly worse, on your first break. They just cool faster that's really it. If you abuse your brakes to the point where they start to give a burning smell all the time maybe upgrade

I heard that drilled and slotted rotors help dissipate the heat as well as get the film that builds up between the rotor and the pad out quicker and the brakes usually run cooler

Conventional vented rotors are ideal for daily driving. More clamping power can be obtained by dishing out for performance rotors, ceramic pads, and multi-cup calipers.
As a retired mechanic, it became too costly, and time consuming to machine rotors. You had to find the min thickness, discard thickness, check the surface for pitting, etc.
You have to know where to find the info...stamped on the rotors...know how to use and read a vernier caliper, you need industry standard books that have info for all makes and models.
How much are you taking off on your rough and fine cuts? You have to measure after you cut, to see where you are with the measurement vs Minimum thickness.
What about bluing? A rotor can be toast, if it is brand new, and the caliper stuck on, causing it to get excessively hot, thus blued.
We always indexed the stud with the valve, using tire marker -for balancing. Put that thing on the machine, and it might be warped, no cutting to be done, then you had order new stuff.
In today's day, rotors are so cheap and widely available, that it's not even worth to machine them.

The holes are to relieve gases to the inside of the rotor and out the vents, and have nothing to do with dissapting heat. The slots keep the pads from becoming glazed.
