The History of Hot Air Skyway Fastest Lap World Records

- This video goes through the known world record history of Crash Team Racing - Hot Air Skyway Lap.
The data prior to 2009 was gathered manually by Justin Zimmermann.
2009-2019 data is from CTR4ever database, but with corrections made by me, when necessary.
2019-2022 data was collected by me manually.
Videos (especially the old ones) are often lost or never even existed.
CTR used a trust based system as it was difficult to upload videos on the internet, especially for minors.
Luckily, Hot Air Skyway Lap has lots of preserved history, and the story can be told despite the missing material.
There is some debate about if BTF used savestates, but I will not take sides here.
As far as history goes, it is an important record and video regardless, for its impact.

Great concept! This kind of content is so interesting, loved it
For me, HAS Lap is the biggest challenge for a CTR player. And one of the most enjoyable piece of gaming in my entire gaming career.
Your video is a masterpiece, I hope more of that will come in the future, from you or somebody else.
And congrats again for your achievement, but who knows what will happen next...
Thanks for the kind comments, means especially lot coming from you. And also, yeah as a lap just finishing one is hard, even GOD is hard. That's why I made the video about this lap. 2005-2008 when I was watching CTR videos on TH-cam for the first time, HAS mega shortcut was something mystical to me.
You absolutely killed it on this video. Thank you for bringing me back to my childhood.
beautiful video, finally even CTR has some history/hype videos :)
Its really amazing how much history this game holds, and sharing that history is really important to understand and appreciate all the hard work the community did to reach what it is today, great video nik, fun story telling :3
Some updates! (Spoilers)
Since the making of this video, Crash68 and Captain Armstice both achieved the long elusive sub 32 lap without BTF or USF start.
Additionally, we now know that an unknown Japanese player had achieved a course time of 2:08 as early as year 2000, meaning the lap record likely was also faster than the first known western records.
4.7.2022, Maraenji got the world record back with a 22:71
November 2023, Pepi beat the world record with a 22:66
Honestly it's such a joy to play in this track, also CTR community needs more videos with this quality.
I'd love to see more stuff like this in the future. Keep the good work mate.
Amazing work Niik, I always wanted to see stuff like this for CTR
Thank you for doing this. I really found it hard to keep up with all of the obscure channels that detailed all the info. Nicely put together!
Great video, always loved CTR growing up. Never as a kid did i imagine a lap time that fast for that map. Loved the history lesson.
This is an excellent documentary. Well done sir !
this lap is special and deserves a video like this, good job Nik :)
Thanks for the video and of course - again - congratulations on the WR
This is beautiful. Well done man ❤
Amazing Nik, I didn't know the whole story of the lap and i had goosebumps during the whole video... Keep up the good work!
Fantastic watch, looking forward to more videos like this in future!
Great job man! This is a track that I always procrastinated to improve, I have huge respect for HAS players.
Also congratulations for the WR!
Crazy good run and vid bro
It's like if Wirtual played CTR haha awesome video :) If you did a timeline of all the different times throughout the video that'd be cool.
Love these videos! Listen to them at work 😂
Oh god yes, a Wirtual-like CTR video, my life is complete now!
Thank you so much
Incredible video Nik! So professional, it reminds me of Wirtual's Trackmania WR videos
Same!
Wow this is like a summoning salt/bismuth video por CTR, amazing work!
Excellent video 👌
Even for an NF player this was really exciting to watch, great work!
Great documentary !
Enjoyable from start to finish, chef's kiss
great video and good job for who have the record on this track,
I am a big fan of this track, u got a new sub
Really liked the editing and music choice in this video. Would love to see more like these, for example 3-lap TA would be fun to see!
Edit: just checked your channel and there it already is! haha
Very good job bro
Was randomly recommended to me glad I watched it. Had no idea how competitive CTR time-trails were/are. Also liked the RnC3 music you used 😉
Hey! Thanks! The TH-cam algorithm recently seems to have realized who the target audience for this one are. Glad you liked it!
Holy shit what a video! Good job!
Great video on the CTR world! Reminds me of the videos of Wirtual on Trackmania indeed (another game I liked to watch and play!). Your video must have taken a huge amount of work, congrats! By the way, I don’t recall having taken USF on the right path of the track back then, it looks quite impossible to pull 🤔
I like wirtual too! I also play trackmania sometimes. The video took maybe 40-60 hours but I learned a lot and now it would take less.
I don't know the origin story of this right path claim, maybe justin does not either, but who knows who put those words in your mouth, then.
This is awesome!!!😮❤
Great video! A lot of memories here... You're all insane with those incredible times. GG! (joora)
Hi Joora!
Thanks 🥰
This is a documentary, a film, congratulations, great work
Thank you. You are too nice 🙏
CTR99 has deffo such a cool lore regarding tracks and it's WRs, and I'm sure NF has the same kind of content
Rlly exciting, keep it up!
Oh... wow. Never would I have imagined that such a long track could be lapped so quickly... even after watching videos on it.
Oddly, the ramp -> finish line skip is something I always liked doing... though with the Super Turbo Pads cheat
Yup, somehow this one is among the shorter laps as a result. I am just as amazed what the community has found.
i applaud your attempt at that french, it was better than i expected 😅
I researched a lot 😅 I know it probably still wasn't perfect
i really enjoyed watching this
Thank you!
Great video. Why was CTR4ever not used after 2019, is it no longer reliable?
I noticed you didn't cut the last corner before the mega shortcut, does it not actually save much time?
1. 2019 there was a bug that broke the database storage system, which means that we don't have old times stored after 2019
2. It saves less than it seems, and it makes the last jump so much harder. Current world record by Maraenji does it.
amazing video, nik
Bro with a little better editing and a better mic this video could've blown up! Nice job
Thanks! It was my first serious attempt at making a video so such problems were to be expected.
@@niikasd everybody starts somehwere! :D Keep up the good work
This brings back memories!
Glad to hear.
Any chance you are someone on the ctr4ever leaderboard? 👀
@@niikasd I used to be at the top of the leaderboard (2007-2008)
The WR's have gotten insane since that time.
@@guest-zi6rg I'm glad you came here to drop a reply, whether you are who I think you are, or not, you are a legend.
How is this video not even mentioning Arsene Lupin‘s mythical right path usf drop, a short he claims to have done which hasn’t been reproduced to this day
Wow, that's a cool tidbit. I will pin this comment to bring awareness to this shortcut👀. I tried to contact Arsene and Kang but unfortunately they did not reply.
@@niikasd ah yeah by the way, awesome WR, congratulations!
@@crashteamalphing thanks! It was a lot of work
@@niikasdYou never pinned the comment
@@sebastiann.8088 it was pinned until I made a comment about new developments on the track that I pinned
Love that ❤️
yo your videos are better than mine!
I didn't know crass team racing was worshiped like this
Those with a PAL copy have unlocked Penta Penguin with maxed out stats so unfair lol!
And yet if you watch the video to the end you will find that the world record uses the north American version.
Btw it's not just PAL that has fast penta, but also NTSC-J
@@niikasd That's out the gate! So in other words if that speed runner did it on a PAL copy he'd of done even better? That'd of been the first thing I checked lol !
@@Blockah no, I hate to reiterate the video but I'll make it very clear and short:
Spin out takes too long on PAL for the pad skip to be possible.
USF speed is the same for all classes.
Hot Air Skyway (HAS) lap is (since the discoveries by AJB) entirely driven with USF.
The startline glitch in HAS only works on USF.
As a result of above, PAL is about 7.5 seconds slower than NTSC-U (North American release) here.
Due to lacking the start line glitch, NTSC-J (Japanese) loses 0.10.
PAL record rn is 29.70
NTSC-U is now 22:66
NTSC-J is 22:89 (though nobody plays it since U is faster)
Btw importing a Japanese copy is cheap nowadays and you can use soft mods to get it running on an American PS1 easily.
@@niikasd Ah right, I figured it was simply all universal and didn't take into account things like the pad skip.
Interesting indeed.
Thanks.
Which is the page where I can find the ctr 1999 records?
Ctr4ever.joora.fr
Woah
Nice one man!:) World record still stands @22:71?😊
Yes, nobody has beat Maraenji
@@niikasd ok, thank you. So u still stay as 2nd best ever drive, impressive! Let us know if record gets beaten :)
@@strahinjacvetkovic9304 yes, I try to keep that post updated 😊 glad you enjoyed the video!
10:00 What is this number in upper right corner?
The turbo counter. In the Japanese version it is enabled by default. In the European and American version you must turn it on with a cheatcode.
Where can you view the times at?
Hello! Ctr4ever.joora.fr is the leaderboard website!
You can view history at

Wait, how did the term saffi fire even come about?
Sans aucune flamme feu infini.
Not any flame (but) infinite fire
It's an acronym
@@niikasd ok, but who created that term?
@@iam4026 a French player called Sayenjin, in 2002 (or his friend, according to a different account)
Alright, and the term sacred fire?
@@iam4026 some french player in 2001. Unknown who exactly. Feu Sacre in french.
Wtf, ps1 good.
i thought saffi was just saphire
Saffi fire and sapphire do sound similar, haha 😆
27:44 wtf was that analogy? lol
Wanna try guessing?
