"The Rollers should be remembered for their glory days". Great quote, very true as they worked very hard. They had no-one to trust. R. I. P. Les, a talent never to be repeated.

I had severe anxiety in elementary school. I got teased a lot so I'd cry every morning. My Mom knew how much I loved The Bay City Rollers so she would put our Rock and Roll Love Letters album on to calm me down. We would dance together until the bus would come. I thanked her for that before she passed and I also thanked her for teaching me how to be a great Mother to my own children. I wish there was a way I could thank them too though, I might have been a fifth grade drop out without their music lol.

Their music saved my life too...happiest days of my teenage years, my heart would soar when I heard one of their songs on the radio.
I hope they know just how much their music meant to us.

Abba were never fashionable or cool but there songs stand alongside Beatles and rolling stones imo excellent rock n roll, timeless, VERY talented musicians and songwriters . Waterloo can be played as a rocking tune or bluesed up. Bcr were a bit wishy washy tbh. But that's the market they were aimed at.

My guess is,they wouldn't have have been as big because they would have over saturated themselves and burned out very fast. When things take time and grow slowly, they tend to take hold stronger.I'm a first generation Rollers fan.I really like the Duncan period as well.Elevator is a GREAT powerpop album.

At one point, I had 10,239 pictures on the walls of my room, at the same time. I know, because one time during a sleep over with my best friend, and fellow Rollermaniac, we took a red pen and numbered each picture. They ranged in size from huge double sized posters to the tiniest pictures cut from 16 or Tiger Beat. The Bay City Rollers WERE my youth.... and my dream is to one day, meet at least one of them to simply say, thank you.

Marcia Burns get yourself on Spotify it’s even better & better sounding make endless playlist & mixes of everything from back in the 70’s 80’s etc or find all my stuff I’ve compiled all the chart years ( done all the hard work for anyone ) you can usually get a month or 3 FREE Premium to start with after you can carry on paying ( that’s the idea to Entice you in or use their freebie device with limitations, 30 ads every 4 tracks & on the free phone app 6 skips of tracks per hour
Here’s a example of what you could listen too 🤓🎶👍🏻

Not a Rollers fan but a lifelong Motor racing fan. Will never forget the Radio 1 fun day at Mallory park, the Rollers came by helicopter landing on a small island in the middle of a lake on the infield.
Racing had to be stopped as fans ran across the track in the middle of the race and many had to be rescued after jumping in and trying to swim across to the island,
It was complete mayhem, never laughed so much in my life😂😂😂

      Musically You Can !!
Start watching the video , then wait a few seconds for the video to play & the listing to jump back to that present video playing & thus the next video inline on view below & so on if you wanna skip through , so no endless scrolling back to your present video position from the first few video’s if your too impatient .. 🤓
I’ve painstakingly searched out the very best video I can find .. that resembles it best sonically, the priority is that firstly & hopefully footage of the very time too .. if not available il ad a generic sound only video placer till someone uploads a descent video version or better combination vid comes along , I can replace it with. Ignore any dating on the videos if it says differently lots of factors why that’s the case. Usually the American artists & bands released their songs earlier, before they got released in the U.K.
… You’ve a complete Top 50 / 75 Chart decade of the 70’s with the very best sound & vision video tracks combo all in every single week after week chart entry order 🤓 plus I add just a few relevant of that very time a tv or film theme also , although a fair few entered the charts themselves anyway, has music was just that good back then … So you’ve got a complete 70’s year on year music library at your fingertips .. if you keep these links below …. … Enjoy AHB 🤓🎶👌🏻

Glad you enjoyed it Bob … these might bring back lots more great memories!!
Definitely better days .. can’t get any worse than things seem to be these days !
But one thing we definitely had back then was endless great music to take our minds off any strife we mighta had unlike the kids of today !!
If your like me I can go back to those moments in my life because of all the music I was listening to continually
The U.K. & US were very similar charts, probably about 60% in similarity ! or there abouts , but all the cream ( popular stuff ) rose in both the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.. so you should enjoy & remember most of these !!!
Although it’s amazing how many ppl do forget .. I have everything personally in my own music collection & library , I’m still collecting/discovering constantly too reading many books & mags on it all these days .. it became a sorta obsession from a kid but from the advent of the digital age I could exponentially get anything I desired. So lots of this now is me copying across my playlist & mixes for others to enjoy if they come across it.
Everything in each yr is in chart entry order too so a late 60’s full 70’s & early 80’s music historical timeline of everything.. & all done eventually 1981 I’m about 2/3 the way through atm

Me, l was a Glitterband fan, but boy did l admire The BayCityRollers. Great young men we should all be proud of. We are loosing them all so fast now, these wonderful, talented youngsters from the Seventies. For those of us left behind we should defend them all. Be the voices that some of them no longer have. Many of the seventies bands were ripped off. Keep their memories alive people, no matter how. RIP Alan Ian and Les. In fact l extend that to members of not only The BayCity Rollers but also members of The GlitterBand, Sweet and all other seventies bands that have lost members. Thanks one and all for the best memories ever. 😪

I keep there memories alive by just listening to all their stuff daily , with my personal music collection or a video online like right here on YT
But I’ve also curated a few of my personal mixes & playlists to Spotify, about 250 so far , for anyone to listen to, even have the virtual every ever chart hit library of EVERYTHING at their fingertips to go to & find a moment in time & play the music that defined that moment , those choons that pinpoint specific times in our happy or even sad! historical memory , what we were doing at those times places we went & heard them, the friends we had ..... ALL HERE IF ANYONE USES .. SPOTIFY! 👇🏻
I’ve quite a big following now off them of folk on there with technology now most of us have , I enjoy the fact that with my music obsession , I’ve hopefully helped others find all those long lost forgotten choons ppl don’t HEAR anymore! But are instantly & readily available to all now , all the hard work done 🤓🎶👍🏻 all you have to do is listen , find a year a month etc & your back !!! 😍👌🏻👇🏻

I will always defend my 1970's bands to the ends of the Earth! I get so much flack from friends about my obsession with 70's artists, many of whom are given a bad rap, but I've never cared. I know they're wrong. Also, pop music requires talent and drive just like any other genre. I think people forget how grueling the entertainment industry is on the mind, body and soul. It's easy to be dismissive if you've never been a part of it or privy to the behind the scenes.

    • @Shikta-poobah67

It really puts things into perspective once you reach a certain age where you start watching members of all the bands you grew up listening to die on a frequent basis. I’m pushing 60, was just a little kid when I first got into the Rollers, and already there are 3 Rollers gone. I’ve been a huge Ramones fan for almost as long, and that entire band has passed, at least all the original members. Then I think about all the original 50’s rockers, who are now *ALL* gone since Jerry Lee passed away last year. It won’t be much longer before all the 60’s rockers have left us, and soon after, the 70’s.
      Time is a cruel bitch.

What was it about the BCR's above all the other 70's heartthrobs that particularly made girls go so hysterical in some cases? I remember seeing it in tv as a child and being disturbed by it the scenes of fainting and screaming. Was it their looks, songs, or a combination of both? Even Cassidy and The Osmonds didn't quite have this level of hysteria.

@@markfernandes9715 I think it was that the Rollers captured the essence of youth better and more accurately than the other big 70’s teen icons did. There was just something more genuine about them. Their music (for the most part) captured that feeling of what it was like to be young and alive better than most. That’s my take on it anyway. I mean, I was never a screamer or a fainter, plus I’m a guy… but I do remember getting that ‘rush’ from their music, as opposed to the Osmonds, who in my opinion only had one good song (Crazy Horses).

Saturday Night was their big breakthrough on this side of the pond, some time at either the very end of ‘75 or the very beginning of ‘76, but I had already been turned on to their records at least a year earlier (I’m American) through my aunt, who somehow already knew about them. I was only 7 years old at the time, and I completely loved it. In fact it was the Rollers and the original Alice Cooper Band that started my lifelong musical obsession. They were both ground zero for me.
Anyway, I just remember how before the Howard Cosell thing, nobody here in the states knew who they were or even wanted to know, and then all of a sudden Rollermania swept the nation like a tartan tsunami. The main thing I remember about 1976, aside from all the obvious bicentennial stuff, was 3 things: The Hustle, Frampton Comes Alive, and Rollermania.

@@alrightdave6135 They didn’t write what songs? Only the first album contains a majority of songs from outside writers, as was the record contract agreement with Bell when they were signed. After their initial success in 1974, adjustments were made to their contract and Eric and Woody started contributing the lion’s share of songwriting. By the time of the 3rd album (Wouldn’t You Like It), nearly all of the songs were written by band members.
This big myth that they only used outside songwriters still persists for some reason, even though several decades have passed and it’s extremely easy to research the facts.

    • @OLDGOLDDREAMER

The Seventies were the best ever decade for music Aaron, we had endless fads & fashions to go with it too, practically every teenage & pre teen girl around the mid 70’s when Bay City Roller mania was in full swing wore their clothes garnished in strips of their fave Roller member tartan or fully made tartan clothes , I remember my mum constantly had her sewing machine out doing all this after buying the tartan clothes in Leeds world famous market , were M&S began. ( transforming my sisters clothes)
Start of the 70’s we had the hippie rolling over from the 60’s , long maxi skirts turned to mini skirts , also Heavy Metal began a year later in 71! , skinheads was a prevalent fad & they listened to Northern Soul & Reggae Music predominantly , Slade were a skinhead band till along came Glam Rock , T.Rex transformed from a folk type band morphing Bubblegum music & Rock to give us Flamboyant Glam foot stomping music with Glitter, Man makeup, Hats & extravagant clothes Platform shoes ,star jumpers , Prog Rock came along Darkside of the Moon , Genesis ELP, a mid seventies lull with good old pop choons of multitude of various genres , but with a underlying more Danceable beat taking hold in the popular music charts ( 4 on the floor beat ) a mixture of TSOP, Soul, Funk , The DJ became the focal point & all this was being played in newly opening Discotheques , mid seventies we were suffering political turmoil with endless strikes ( U.K. ) oil & endless other things worldwide after the Bay City Rollers had , had their moment in-time there was a short lull in fashion & fads although a vibrant Pub Rock scene was carrying on in London & the surrounding areas , whilst we all baked in the hottest summer ever in 1976 here in the U.K. but in London the next trend was about to hit the masses of the U.K. it had been a underground movement since 74 in New York ( New York Dolls , Television Ramones ) !
Punk Rock was a backlash against the stagnant state of music & fashion, along with the crumbling socialist economy of the States & U.K. not to mention endless strikes & the rising unemployment we seemed to have to endure here in the U.K. By the very end of 76’ the very
at the end November Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols came out on a single & charted , beaten thou by another punk band The Damned with New Rose weeks earlier , but that was the spark that ignited the Punk movement that didn’t last that long but shook music up , it eventually turned into a genre called New Wave , although at the time it was still thought of as punk.
At the End of 77 start of 1978 in the midst of the punk explosion a film came out , very edgy for the time ! with sea dialogues for swearing & expletives the likes I’d never heard before but , I was still only 14 😄 , they didn’t bother that much in those days about your age , we were going in pubs drinking too 🤭 by 15 we were regulars 😂 ( honest ) so a 18 rated film at our local flee pit was nothing.
Anyway we’re was I !!! Oh yes this film that suddenly changed the world ?!?!?
Saturday Night Fever it was , we’d goes see films in those days & come out transformed almost instantly.. same thing happened after seeing Bruce Lee , Enter The Dragon we’d be all Kung foo kicking about each other 🥴 It did start me off going to Jujitsu lessons for 4 or 5 years thou ( one of the best things I ever did ) helped me with Football & keeping a reign on my teenage life.
So everyone after seeing Saturday Night Fever & hearing the music ( soundtrack) Disco suddenly exploded upon the world masses ... literally, Discotheque open up everywhere, Disco tracks took over & dominated the charts even world renowned established artist & bands such as Paul McCartney , Rolling Stones , Rod Stewart were jumping on the bandwagon. A song in the spring off 77’ would blow everyone away though with a totally different sound & beat to anything ever heard before
A Giorgio Moroder’s produced single for Donna Summer ( The Queen of Disco ) - I Feel Love would change music for the next 20 odd years !!
Then 6 months later John Travolta with the help of Olivia Newton John took over the world again, in a musical & in the music charts with the film Grease & its soundtrack
Punk was a distance memory, a more refined Punk aka New Wave was now churning out belters for the masses .Outa this was a sub genre that growing increasingly popular after a few sporadic hits throughout the decade , Synth’s keyboards were becoming cheaper to use & buy , by up & coming Artists & Bands . Another game changer happen in mid 79’ by a guy who accidentally came across a synth whilst recording the traditional way ( Gary Numan ) , he stole the thunder off ( OMD , Ultravox , Human League to name but a few ) by having a No1 totally electronic sounding hit , that kicked started the Synthpop era, Tubeway Army - Are friends Electric .... all those aforementioned bands & many more would take over the charts in the next decade of the 80’s & beyond after Numan’s Electronic masterpiece.
Another fashion that begun in 79’ that had morphed outa the Punk explosion & was now gathering pace in London Soho district was
The New Romantics ( Blitz Kidz ) who’s flamboyant over the top dandy style anchored back to the Glam Rock era as well incorporating many other of the 70’s fashion , not to mentions even the 40’s & 50’s !!
Their hero been a man that had spent the whole of the 70’s been like a music chameleon embracing each fad very early & enjoying massive success , this also applied to another similar type trend setter group Roxy Music another staple of the New Romantics fave music preference
Lastly in late 79’ two other events changing happenings happened. The release of the Who Inspired rock opera film Quadraphenia came out kickstarting The Mods & Rockers revival with Ska from Two Tone being the main music in that fad & fashion
Also in America a rock DJ got sick of disco so joking promoted a Disco sucks ( Demolition) gathering at Chicago’s Comminsky Park night White Sox game , admission was a disco record that was then to be blown up with thousands of others too but the normal 20,000 crowd expected turned out to be 50,000 plus thousand frenzied fans. It got outa hand after the records were blown up damaging the pitch & many fans watching with flying vinyl .. The day Disco died!! Not really it just got even better from then on in, The cream rose to the top of disco acts , morphing into a classier lush sound of .. dance , funk , , jazz funk , jazz fusion Italia disco, soul jazz , unfortunately probably the best & classiest Disco band was Chic who didn’t survive the disco demise, so instead Nile & Bernard turned their talent to being producers, transforming the sound of major or future major stars .
Lastly a Chic hit was the catalyst of a genre of music that changed the world!! eventually !! Although in my opinion after the two major hits of this genre it’s been downhill ever since !!
Rappers Delight by the Sugarhill Gang then Kurtis Blows The Breaks were the very start & pinnacle of hip hop , rap IMO
check out all my Spotify playlists if you use !! all the above get a playlist dedicated to the genre 🤓🎶👍🏻

The Bay City Rollers and KC and The Sunshine Band were the first musical groups that I really loved as a kid .. As time went on, I listened to KISS, AC/DC, Cheap Trick, then The Ramones, Blondie, etc ... Sometime in the early 2000s, after not having thought about The Rollers in 20+ years, I was going through my LPs and I put on Summerlove Sensation .. As the song played, I sat frozen, overwhelmed not simply with nostalgia, but at how incredibly perfect this song was, and how it was still better than anything ever .... I think part of the magic was how we as fans could relate to the "wow, this is actually happening" feeling, sort of like winning the lottery .. The BCRs, like KISS, was a grassroots phenomena that was as much about the fans and the fans connection to the music and each other, as it was about the music .... And the music has stood the test of time ..

My first two favorite bands in life were the BCR’s and the original Alice Cooper Band. Strange pairing perhaps, but I was equally obsessed with both bands at exactly the same time in my childhood. Kind of like yourself, I later on got into stuff like Cheap Trick, Ramones, and AC/DC, and subsequently punk and hardcore… but it all began for me with the Bay City Rollers and Alice Cooper. I also had a rather lengthy period of my life where I had stopped listening to the Rollers, but back around Y2K when Napster was a thing, I downloaded a ton of those old BCR tunes and remembered just how great they were. By that point I had long since gotten rid of all my old (BCR) records from my youth, but I quickly set about buying them all again, and I’ve been listening ever since. Mostly it’s classic pop music that still retains it’s original appeal. Some of it sounds really dated and ridiculous, but the stuff that’s good is REALLY good.

I got heavily into the Bay City Rollers after working in a thrift shop and seeing one of their albums 40 years after its release. Someone bought it before I could get off my shift. Being a huge fan of all things 1970's, I ended up finding my own copy. I had always been more into punk rock and metal, but I visited the UK and saw Les play, saw Woody play, saw Alan's play, and met Derek. Watching the fans get excited like teenagers after what must have been 40 years of following them was incredible. There's something special about bands like the Bay City Rollers and their fan base. Maybe if you're a more cynical person you might write pop artists off, but I find Rollermania infectious and incredible. They were musicians and it was Alan's band at the end of the day. I love my pop and top 40 albums right alongside my obscure and dark ones, and I don't care what anyone says. Long live the Rollers and long live Alan, Ian and Les.

Not sure what little miss caps-lock’s problem is just above me up there, but hopefully she gets all that pent up tension and frustration out of her system some day and learns that there’s a ‘w’ in the word “two”. Anyway, I’m like you. I just like what I like. Good tunes is good tunes. Doesn’t matter if it’s “rock”, “pop”, “art”, or fluff. Doesn’t matter if it’s one chord or a hundred. If it sounds good to my ears and moves me enough to feel something special, then I’m down. People who look through my record collection always seem a bit puzzled and ask me things like “How can you like both (so and so) *AND* (so and so) at the same time?”. I tell them it’s easy, just stop caring what others think about it. Most people limit themselves too much with what they’re “supposed to” listen to or not listen to. I literally feel sorry for them. It must be exhausting making all these rules for oneself to adhere to. You often hear people say that the Rollers were terrible songwriters, or that their songs were nothing more than lightweight fluff, and typically it’s not even an actual opinion founded in fact. It’s just a knee-jerk reaction to seeing a bunch of screaming teenage girls lose their shit over a band, like that somehow negates the potential of anything good in the music itself.

    • @robynnsong

A lot of the BCR “fan club” people don’t like me so I wouldn’t be surprised if this is another one of their “fans”, lol. I didn’t even notice that comment until your reply. But yeah, I agree with you. I like lots of “bad” music. Way too many people tried to knock me for my taste in music or musical ability throughout my life. With art & music it’s about what inspires you as a creative, not what fan club members or critics think.

@@robynnsong In my book, not seeing eye to eye with the critics is a good thing. Not seeing eye to eye with fan club members? Even better. I’ve had a few run-ins with some of these fan club hive-minders myself through the years, so believe me, I understand just how belligerent they can get. It’s almost like a gang mentality with those people. Musical simpletons, incapable of having an original thought or an opinion of their own, imposing their narrow views on anyone who disagrees with them. They all seem to be sharing the same low-wattage brain. Infantile, ridiculous, simple-minded.
So, keep on keeping on, and just enjoy being a thorn in their side. Cheers from a fellow “bad” music lover. 😁

Greatest music days we’ve ever had , who’d of thought all that great music produced WEEKLY by hundreds of bands & artist would ever end !! To what we have today , when maybe you get a dozen descent songs a year if that , unlike our weekly doses of 30-40 great tracks back then 🤩🤩👍🏻

Woody was yellow, Leslie's was blue, and Eric's was red, (like the traditional Macgregor tartan), Derek's was green, and Alan's was a navy blue. There are still thousands of amazing artists around, but not mainstream now, thanks to sites like TH-cam. The mainstream stuff is controlled by assholes in suits, the curators are now the creators. The assholes have been worming their way in for a long time, like a parasitic virus, now they have completely taken over the ridiculous top 40. A very good documentary of a boy band who were very big for 3 or 4 years and unknowingly at the time taken advantage of. In all this we had interviews with Les,woody,Alan and Derek but nothing from Eric which i found rather strange. I still have great memories of this band as they brought so much joy to a lot of people at the time.

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Eric has never been very big on doing interviews, and is even less of a fan of discussing his time with the Rollers, so it’s not that surprising to me that he doesn’t appear in this. Personally I would have liked to have seen them go into the Duncan era (‘79-‘81), and maybe talk to Duncan Faure himself. That particular era too often gets overlooked, and they were actually making some pretty decent music at the time.
Now, I have to say it. The whole “boy band” thing has never really sat well with me. I mean yes, I get that the Rollers were basically the template for the boy band market, but they actually did play their own instruments. Whether they were accomplished musicians or not has no bearing on the fact that if one is in a “boy band”, then their performance is generally limited to singing and dancing… and even then the dancing is all choreographed. The Rollers never fit the bill there. It’s worth pointing out since the term “boy band” carries a *LOT* of baggage.

    • @edwardpink2759
      @edwardpink2759 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@Shikta-poobah67 Yes i see your point of view as the Rollers did play their own instruments and probably should have been known as a group. But they were very young at the time of their success and that is why the Boy Band label started with them and went on a lot later with acts such as Boyzone and One Direction even though those last two acts didn't play any instruments . In fact how can they call any act a Band if they don't play instruments!

    • @Shikta-poobah67
      @Shikta-poobah67 ปีที่แล้ว

@@edwardpink2759 Yeah I’ve never really understood that terminology myself. It really should be “boy groups” rather than “boy bands”, but I don’t make the rules. All I know is that over the years there have been thousands… maybe even hundreds of thousands of bands made up of members who were still in their teens, or in a few instances even preteens, that were never once referred to as “boy bands”. When the L.A. punk/power pop band Redd Kross (or Red Cross as they were originally known) released their first record, their bass player was only 11, and the oldest band member was 17. They were officially signed to a record label and already touring the local circuit. There are tons of other examples, especially with punk and garage bands.
I don’t know. The bizarre usage of the “boy band” labeling, especially in recent times has been rather confusing. I see people these days often try to label the Beatles as a boy band, which is utterly ridiculous and wrong. Maybe a case could be made for the Monkees, but I don’t even think it applies with them. The very first group I can think of that *TRULY* fit the category was Menudo, in the early 80’s.

ALL my playlists should be right up your street ! if not check out my new copies of those playlists I’m now starting to do on YT … a few unfinished ones but the years are fully done more to come of those … here’s a finished playlist of the end almost of The BCR prime time here in Blighty as Punk Rock & Disco began at the yrs end .. this playlist is unique to the U.K. as we had the longest & at that time ‘hottest’ continual summer on record , everywhere .. it’s still never been bettered even to this day .. You still recognise 90% of the choons as the US & U.K. shared most good music that was coming out continually in those days 😃

      TH-cam PLAYLISTS
All the playlists below you can view on the YT App Obviously … the links I’ve put below will open up pre … TH-cam App , so if you txt or message this message or links to facebooks messengers or in a txt to yourself you can then view them .. which is BETTER …as you can freely move through them all without all the annoying adverts you’ll get on the YT app .. doing it this way it says the odd time some videos are deleted, missing or private in the playlist list of compiled videos ! but they are not missing , I don’t know why it does that ….. these are Top 50 chart yrs playlist & are all in true weekly order of entries .. wasn’t sure whether to do Top 30 playlists instead, has outside the Top 30 Charts throughout the 70’s there’s lots of music ppl won’t remember or even have heard !! … anyway I’ve added them as we all bought favourite stuff that didn’t make it onto TOTP’s or into the Top 30 chart run down ( 70’s ) .. plus there’s plenty of gems in em ppl will have bought & loved .. they all count !
Use these ⬅️➡️ under the videos to move through them ( much easier ) 🤓🎶🎶☀️☀️👌🏻👇🏻 I’ve painstakingly searched out the best video I can find .. that resembles it sonically, the priority is that firstly & hopefully footage of the very time too .. if not available il ad a generic sound only video placer till someone adds a descent version comes along.
I’m about half way through adding the tracks into the yr 1978 so when completed you’ve a complete Top 50 / 75 decade of the 70’s set of the best sound & vision video tracks & in every single weeks chart entry order, a complete 70’s library at your fingertips …. … Enjoy 🤓🎶👌🏻
