My favorite enemies are the Autobombs. The fact that you can ride them COULD be used as a gimmick in a later Mario game, but Nintendo hasn't brought them back yet.
It could be replicated in Mario Maker so there’s that.
It is supposed to be a dream.
Some of these enemies are necessary to survive. Like the whale , the albatoss & the ball inside birdo’s stomach.

Shy guy snifit phanto ninji pokey bomb omb and other SMB2 enemies are bowser minions
But they were originally part of Wart's army
Shy guy only appears on Mario party etc
Ninji did appears one level Mario world and in one Mario world episode on super Mario world cartoon
