at all... smh. Phyllis was in a class all of her own, intellectual, business savvy, absolutely stunning to look at, magnificent voice.. everything. She was amazing. Today our artists are missing HUGE chunks on individuality and intellect smh.
Just honest and bold. I completely support her position. The music industry has taken everything from us. Be yourself and accept your own. I have a company and I look for Black employees first. Their color will get them in the door. Their abilities is what will keep them there. That may be a bit too real for some of you...But frankly I don't care. I'm trying to have what the rest of the world has....Something of our own.
Bawse Dom I realize this comment was made a while back but it was excellently stated and very relevant still to date. Your mindset is impactful and extremely necessary. Thank you.
I love and adore Phylis Hyman so very much!!!! She has always been one of, if not of four or five of my favorite singers male and female!!! If I were to say just female, then she would be my second favorite singers!!! Now after seeing this video clip, I just love and adore her as one of my favorite singers and people in general!!! Beauty, brains, talented and gifted, charisma, humanitarian, philanthropist!!! Wow She looks stunning in this video!!!! 👑💖💖💖🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶✨🙏🏾✨
She was on point. Blacks need to start companies and hire most if not all of our people just the other races do. I'm a black a male in Miami and some of the establishments I go into are mostly staffed by hatians or spanish people.
wonderful interview and she's right, own your own because that industry will chew you up and spit you out. so many black entertainers and athletes end up broke in this industry. never forgot hearing TLC going down that route of making so much off of records but had no money!! Phyllis was on top of it which may have been one of the reasons why she went out the way she did. too much stress and unhappiness.. loved her so much. still miss her.
this queen was on top of the game when it came to the business side.my father use to say never let someone else count your money.they killed this black queen.
OMG how am I just seeing this. Such a gifted, bold beautiful woman who loved her people. To do what she did at the time she did it in such a jaded industry is remarkable. Thank you Ms. Hyman and continue to sleep in perfect peace.
This whole interview she was speaking straight facts and talking about things that others weren’t really back then. Very impressive. And she was so intelligent. She is definitely missed ❤
God rest this woman soul. I remember the day when she was reported to have died. Such a very strong woman with pride and common sense. Died too soon. Rest in peace, Queen. We miss you dearly. Will always love you and your stance.
Phyllis Hyman, a beautiful melanated woman indeed... I'm glad Beyoncé studied Phyllis Hyman, and has kept black creatives/artists on heavily on her payroll...
😉It's 2019 and I thank you for this footage, I'm a fan of Phyllis Hyman. She's right and we need to be reprogrammed.🤔We still carry the baggage of slavery being the descendants of it.
She was a solid individual regardless of her personal issues cause at the end of the day none of us are perfect cause we all have our own crosses to bear.
Ms.Phyllis Hyman was my girl back then and will always be. Love her music and for keeping it real! I wish she was still here with us. May she rest in peace.
Philly's was ahead of her time! Ima do the same thing when I graduate and start my business. She was pointing out some really important things. Why did it take us so long?
Good for you!!! Do it!!! Makes total sense given that non blacks discriminate blacks so much!! If others complain, remind them the world caused this by discriminating for hundreds of years and still now.
According to a certain journalist, Donny Hathaway had Phyliss’s same attitude, and my dear father, still to this day, has NEVER believed he jumped out of a window to his death. He still says, “Somebody pushed him.” It seems as if all the black artists who insisted on owning their publishing and running their own business ends up dead under peculiar circumstances: Michael, Prince, Sam, Phyliss, etc. Why? 🤷🏽♀️
well spoken. and like most of you said; this is whats lacking from our artists. now, u can pick on Black Artists and managers and CEOs all day but the bottom line is the Green Dollar. u can hire as many minorities as u want to Buuuut, its all about capitol. what can you bring to the table??? when you bring it, can you keep bringing it. some artists and managers are one-sided and thats how most of them fade out just as soon as they come in.
It’s some people who make the Green the only bottom line ... but it doesn’t have to be. Like she said, she wasn’t in a hurry because she was making a fine enough living singing ... meaning she was not all about Green and actually looked at life holistically, which is the better way. Her thinking allowed her to slow down and care about her how to operate her company the way she wanted which was to hire more blacks. This was her way to give back to her community who put her in the successful entertainment world. Makes absolute sense and the the right thing to do!
I have to be great. The DNA of all my strong, Intelligent, forceful ancestors is within me and I have a duty to them and my people . Thank you for leading by example Ms. Hyman, I will follow.
What does Phyllis Hyman, Whitney Houston, and Janis Joplin have in common? They were all female singers who were found dead in hotels (due to overdoses).. ..and they were all connected to Clive Davis ..Go figure
Lashid4u Phyllis overdosed at home in her New York apartment. Unfortunately she did commit suicide. I have her book. She was suffering from Bi-Polar Mood Disorder, a mental disorder that caused her to experience periods of mania (extreme highs) and periods of depression (extreme lows).
@@justmedrea4361 Yes, I know of her, initial, suicide attempt, as w/ Marilyn Monroe ..I, also, know that she suffered from depression, along w/ drug & alcohol addiction (I, myself, made an attempt as a teenager) ..but understand that the wicked powers that be can use these known "issues" if they want to take you out ..Like, if they know that you are an epileptic, they can, easily, murder you, and just say that you had died of suffocation, due to an epileptic seizure ..and there is much reason to believe that Marilyn Monroe was MURDERED, even though she had, once, attempted suicide...
She was incredibly intelligent. I wonder where she’d be if she was still alive. I bet she’d be big in the nightlife/entertainment industry in the ownership role
Ok, but - Hearing this interview, opening my eyes today and I’m asked myself: What did really happen to Phyllis Hyman? So beautiful, brainy, open minded, involving, by tending such a built speech of positive perspective for black people. . . Did she really suicide?
Research the producer Clive Davis. And I feel he was behind Whitney Houston as well. He's a devil. From what I understand he and Phyllis never saw eye to eye.
Hint hint, they DIDN'T. Tina Turner moved to Europe and has isolated herself there. Diana Ross while she doesn't have as many staffs as she did in her heydays, her family office is staffed mainly by you guessed it, white people. Beyoncé's staff is mostly white with the exception of her dancers/band and body guard, even her secretary/nanny is white. I say hire on merit, but don't be out here preaching black, black, black, but then turn a blind eye to providing opportunities to black people.
@@talesbyciel you’re partially wrong and mostly right here. Diana Ross has managed herself since the early 80’s with the exception of a brief period in the 90’s where she was managed by her eldest daughter. Her assistant and secretary both of whom are Black, were employed by her during this time, one of which still works for her. She did have a Jewish attorney and publicist around this time. All Black backing singers as well as band members as well.
Phyllis was a triple threat; Beautiful, brainy and black. She was awesome
YES!!!!!
100% YES !!!
She sure was. Man, do we miss her still, especially today!
She was ahead of her time. Such a beautiful person inside and out

Seemed like a very principled woman. Respect.
She was so business savvy, very rare for an artist.
Man, I could listen to her talk all day.

She was so smart and so aware! It seems like as soon as they become aware, they are taken..........
