- This is the first video in a series to complete an awesome 318 engine for Dread Head Hayden. Me and @johnwilburn are building an stout 318 for Hayden's Dart Swinger, and testing it out in the coming weeks.

I really didn’t believe your 318 could be grimier, but sure enough..... this is going to come together nicely. We are going to build Hayden a mill to be proud of!
I’ve rotated heads twice in the pan. May try to wire wheel them today to get cracks checked
@@JonnyMopar That was an 80s thing that did change, but the reputation stuck. Quaker State had clear bottles for a while trying to help with that, but I don’t know anyone who uses Quaker State.

amazing, last night at about 5 pm, i finally got my 89 318 tbi engine from a neighbor. Got it home, blew it off with air hose and pulled the heads off. looks good so far, will pull valves in a hour or so this morning. Hope for no visible cracks. I hope you get to porting soon, as I will be doing a minor port job also. Im thinking to put this engine in my 77 W200, 4bbl, cam and headers. truck has 4:10 gears. the extra compression will help. I want to use a 268H cam, I read last night these roller engines can be converted to hyd. flat tappet, I have one barely broke in, from a 75 318. I am trying to keep this engine low dollar.

the 85 318 block I have in my truck was set up from the factory to run either hydraulic lifters or roller lifters . it was as almost as filthy . used lots of engine degreaser to disassemble it . heads went to machine shop . once I got those back I gave them a gasket on the ports and clean the bowls up. the engine I eventually disassembled and few years later off to the machine shop to be preped for a short block build . you have to up the compression a little since material is being removed from the chamber check the CC' s to make sure their even on each chamber after grinding. can't wait to get the 360 built for my dart .

I’m running a ‘87 318 with 44,000 original miles out of a w150 4x4 in my 87 Dakota . It’s got the 302# swirl port heads . Been in the truck since 2013 and still strong . Best 285.00 I ever spent
Thats a great deal. Those motors will run forever if you keep them serviced and change out the timing chain at some point. LOL
@@JustMoparJoe for sure . I think this summer I’m gonna pull it out and drop my 94’magnum 360 in .Probably gonna use the a518 trans that’s behind it . But I may hate not having my 5 speed anymore .
I think I probably have over 200,000 on that 318 now. Still just purrs . I’m just running a ‘66 carter 2 barrel from a poly 318 with the original ‘87 v6 carb spacer . Msd 6A box . ax15 trans.8 1/4 LSD rear axle with 3.55 gears .
My 89 360 was the same way. i drove it to the shop before i tore it down and it was filthy. when i bought my RC i even cleaned it up when i did a tune up on it.
It’s crazy how bad they get. This engine ran like a top! Better than most modern ones lol

@@JustMoparJoe I went back to work I got bored with retirement. Yes all my doctors are yelling at me. But my new run takes me through Oklahoma and Missouri but not Arkansas. One of these days I'll drive by. But yes I am excited about the big block build.

This will be a great build! 318 a very common and lots of people are always looking on how to get power out of them. I've got a Roller 318 in my 87 RC, do you know of any rowdy cams that are good for a Roller 318 build?
Check out Hughes engines. Also a LA roller cam will work. I like Lunati. It’s all dependent on compression, heads, and what intake and carb your running!

@@JustMoparJoe Currently Is a 1987 2Bbl stock Roller 318 that is creeping up on it 100k service. It runs great but I figured if Im going to do a timing chain I might looks into what else I can do. Basically i just want a loppey cam thats fun to drive around. Doesn't have to be practical haha
@@DuddiesAdventure Hughes whiplash cam. I think the roller version is listed under the magnum section of their website but you can use it in a l.a. block with their extension.

Dave, Duddie asked about a good roller cam choice for his ramcharger. You can help him out! It’s a few comments up.
The more I watch the more I wish I knew a tenth of what you do. As long as you did not start up open header at night wish you lived next door. But then again my coon dog may cause some issues resulting in you starting that race motor upon the middle of the night lol. Have a great day

@@JustMoparJoe as a dad of An 8 and 10 year old don’t baby them too much or they will be so sensitive that your life gets hard. Be loud get them use to it. Celebrate what you think is cool from the start and hell they might even think it is cool too. You barrow my dog if you want to break them in lol
