    No one enjoys stripping it down, specially the endless hours of sanding that follows, but if done right. The beauty of grain in these older pieces can't be compared to the crap bought in stores today. Well there is an exception. A group is salvaging logs lost in the great lakes. The cold has preserved the wood, but the grain patterns, quality and beauty can't be compared.
    Nice video, thanks..

    Just a little FYI, don’t go back and forth when applying chemical stripper. Brush it on in one stroke, in one section , and move on to next area.

    This tutorial was very helpful. I've decided to refinish old furniture that's made of REAL wood rather than outfit the house with the cheap crummy pressboard Chinese furniture that's out there these days. I've inherited some great 1940's furniture that will last forever, they just need a little TLC.

      I never have with paste stripper, but we do with liquid stripper all the time. I'm certain that if you really wanted to, there are plenty of times you could reuse the stripper.

    I just finished a dresser, and wished I has seen this before my attempt. I waited at least 15 minutes and what a daunting task. Plus I didn’t do in sections. Ty for sharing!
    Oh, one question though, my original hardware left a shadow. I don’t mind the shadow so much, but the ever so slight outline of black. I’ve sanded, fades but doesn’t quite go away. I’m nervous that if I keep sanding that I won’t have any wood left. Would you have any suggestions?

    Great video. Do you have recommendations on products to use in a NON-VENTILATED area? I'm going to refinish an armoire that's in a 12x12 space with only one small window; the armoire is too large for me to move outdoors. I have many pets in the house, so I'm nervous about injecting harmful vapors into the air. I'm not under any time constraint, so it doesn't need to be fast, just safe. Thank you.

      Try Citristrip , you can buy it at most home improvement stores as well as Amazon, it's safe for indoor use with little to no ventilation

    A lot of furniture has a wax finish. Any tips on removing that? Paint stripper doesn't work. I've tried a wax stripper but that was useless. Also any tips of removing furniture treated with wood dye?

    • @FurnitureRefinishingStudio
      @FurnitureRefinishingStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't come across wax finishes often, but I'd expect a commercial grade finish remover would take it off ? Dye in the wood is a different story, as strippers only remove a portion of it, if any at all.

    • @danohyeah5893
      @danohyeah5893 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FurnitureRefinishingStudio
      In Britain waxed finished furniture is very common, especially on antique items.
      The only thing I haven't tried is industrial strength paint stripper, like what they use on cars. But Im a bit apprehensive about using it as I've read it can be quite dangerous.
      The best way I found to remove wood dye is to use a paint/varnish stripper, then cover it in bleach, leave it for a while, then rinse and scrub it with a stiff brush. You may have to repeat this several times.

    I enjoy stripping, but I always goober up the inside of the drawers. The old stain dribbles down the edges and makes it look bad. Do you ever mask off the drawer interiors, or have a suggestion for me?

    • @misstweetypie1
      @misstweetypie1 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it’s fours years since you asked the question, but just in case others have the same question… as long as it is above freezing, I would assume it will work, but generally, chemical reactions slow down in cold temperatures, so it might take longer to work. This is my guess, based on my knowledge of chemistry. I could be wrong, but since nobody else offered an answer, I thought I would :)

      Sanding is the next step. Either just a light scuff or a more aggressive sanding depending on your situation.

    Question: I have two wooded barstools (made of beachwood with a factory finish) that I want to stain to match my dining table. I watched this very helpful video and purchase the same products you used. Applied just as you did, and followed instructions on the back that said I may need to repeat steps on stubborn finishes. I got zero results. Didn't do a darn thing. I repeated the steps three times. Temperature was right, everything. I'm stumped. And ideas as to why this method might have failed? Thx for the tips!

    • @FurnitureRefinishingStudio
      @FurnitureRefinishingStudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Occasionally, you'll run across a finish that won't strip, or is very difficult. Polyester finishes come to mind as almost impossible, and conversion varnish or some urethane's comes to mind as very difficult. In those cases, there just isn't a lot you can do.

    WHY lacquer thinner after stripping?

    • @FurnitureRefinishingStudio

      Lacquer thinner is used to clean off the paint remover residue, which contains wax to slow down evaporation and drying.
