After 14 years of editing in Final Cut. I finally switched over to DaVinci Resolve with the release DR 17 beta. Priceless, I purchased DR 15 studio a couple of years ago. But just played around with it here and there. But now, I'm sold.

Plus, I can still use my Motion 5 projects in Davinci Resolve as well. Hey Tom, which editing software are you currently using?

Yes it has, but its so much limited... First there is no quick keyboard short cut to bring the keyword window and second, and most importantly, you can't assign keywords to multiples selections inside a single clip.. As I said in a previous comment, this is absolutely killer feature to have when editing documentary work, where very long takes are common..When you have a 15 min clip containing a lot of scenes or situations going from a two shot of a conversation to close up cut aways etc.... (cameraman did not cut to keep sound rolling or avoid missing a spontaneous event) ... it's just amazing. Also, if you keyword say a 5 seconds selection of a longer clip, when clicking on the keyword "bin", your 5 seconds selection will appear as a new, 5 sec clip, a bit like when you create a sub clip in Resolve, except you STILL can extend it or reduce it, by moving it's IN and OUT points.
I'm using Davinci Resolve Studio for 1 month and it's just a killer of Premiere Pro! Now waiting for your course about editing in Avid and my toolset is completed 😁
One additional con for AVID users is that when you bring a sequence (via AAF) with 3D Picture in Picture elements in it to Resolve, the effect isn't recognized and you're left with the top-most video layer of the composition. Otherwise, DaVinci is really good at translating Timewarps and Resizes.
That is a huge con. Basically Avid has no logic with using multylayerd effects upon nested ones. In DR you have to find work arounds too, but at least they work on a logical base. It is hard to explain and I could give you any real detail, but avid just gets wonky at some point using many pic in pic overlays-
Yes yes yes. Resolve eats up timewarps which are much quicker to do in Avid. Dozens of less clicks and fussing with the lack of ability to freeze within a Resolve retime. When I first learned there is no real zero in a retime, you have to cut and use a freeze frame then go back to the retiming in another cut. Very frustrating to do. In Avid, you curve to zero, hold it as long as you want and curve back up. Resolve's retiming should be like that. But, coming from Avid's retime from an AAF and using Resolve's optical flow is eons better quality so best of both worlds if you edit primarily in Avid. Optical flow is slow but you've already timed everything out so no guesswork, just render time.
aah, i just got into making soft rn and tNice tutorials is so helpful and your voice is so sootNice tutorialng btw! thanks for tNice tutorials tutorial
The cut page is only magnetic in the bottom. If you drag n drop in the “bars” on top you can do anything. Same with fcpx. You can turn off the magnetic function and freely move clips around. Also the tracking in resolve/fusion is bar none the best I have ever used (sans ‘synth eyes, which is pretty deep)
It made me switch”all in one”The price is right and the color correction is the best.Love the UI and the nodes in fusion(it makes so much more sense,to me)
I tried switching to resolve multiple times but the Adobe ecosystem pulls me back everytime 😂😂😂. In my opinion resolve is an amazing tool and deserves more appreciation 👍
Agreed. I really really tried moving to davinci for basic editing but Adobe is just more refined and easier to use. For color correction tho DaVinci is obviously the best
One word, Just awesome Dude !! Your way of explanation is more sensible and understandable...You could some how figure out our thinking and preferences...Waiting for a full length tutorial for Davinci Free Version. Cheers !!
I n the last 25 years I used pretty much any NLE out there . I switched to Resolve as my only NLE since version 12, and never looked back. For me it's the best editor so far.
DaVinci is awesome. It runs smooth on low end computers and it’s completely free. Everything you need is in one program which I believe is less resource intensive. Set your timeline resolution to half and you’re good to go. No more monthly subscription fees. Love it.
this video really make me switch from Adobe Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve. Hands down

The CUT especialy with the speed editor it's the best thing that could happen to me. When you learn a few keys, the work is quick, intuitive, and accurate, I mean cutting scenes - forget about working with a mouse, it's the Middle Ages :)
If this course is as good on your Premier Pro quick start, I'm in. I'm half way thought the Pr course and i'm already putting it to good use. I've been thinking of adding DaVinci to my arsenal for a while. You have finally convinced me to jump in. Thnaks again for this and all you other amazing courses.
I'm really hoping you do an After Effects vs fusion comparison. That's the only thing that is stopping me from jumping to Resolve and I really want to know how your opinion.
I switched to Resolve last year but I also still use After Effects on just about every project. I can tell you, as much as I miss the dynamic link between Premiere and AE, the way that Resolve has drastically improved my editing experience far outweighs the lack of having dynamic link. Imo it's still worth ditching Premiere. Good luck!
Wow that was a great video I’ve been really considering switching from FCPX & Adobe Premier. I have Davinci just haven’t used it yet. I need to look at more of your videos.
@@FilmEditingPro you're welcome.. the truth is, I'm a Premiere Pro long time user. And I've prepared to make a jump to DR when my PPro projects are done, because the folder organization are really different.
while Resolve's feature set is great, it didn't work for me while i was doctoring 2 feature films edited in Resolve. It was just too buggy and slow when the project is big. When edit versions were about 3-4, it was acceptable, but when it went over 10 versions of feature film in the same project, it started to be super slow, driving me mad. When i got back to Premiere I was so happy and relieved. In my experience, one can tell Resolve wasn't designed as an editing application but made into one. For now at least. I sincerely hope they will fix it as the software itself is amazing
@@FilmEditingPro That can easily happen when you use a disk database instead of a Postgres SQL server. A disk database is a large folder of XML files. On every save Resolve will create a complete new set and then delete the old ones. The bigger the project the more time it will take to do all that. Disk databases are fine for some quick projects, but any serious use definitely should switch to a Postgres DB for saving projects. But can easily become a problem with many NLEs. Premiere has problems too on very large projects, because everything is saved in a single XML file. Avid has a bit of an advantage because each bin is it's own file and you can close them when they're not in use. Another issue to look out for is version compatibility. During major version upgrades, the database needs to be upgraded, those projects can no longer be opened with older versions. And if you have databases that are more than 1-2 versions back, they may not open either. Resolves requires a rigorous archive strategy to avoid data loss. Not as foolproof as Avid on that front.
@@JanKlier Amazing and helpful information, thank you Jan! This is some of the "behind-the-interface" stuff that we all feel as we're working but typically don't understand why it's happening.
@@FilmEditingPro Like Jan Klier suggested, switch to a PostgreSQL database for bigger projects. Projects will open and save much quicker. It also helps to store media and caches on a fast SSD or RAID, so thumbnails, audio waveform and clip metadata can be read and written quickly. I also usually switch my timeline view to the preset with no thumbnails.
I was trying to edit in LumaFusion, but it is lacking in so many places compared to DaVinci Resolve. Simple things like adding text in LF could be frustrating. Click this element, no this one; UGG THIS ONE!! After learning to set up some templates, this got better, but just painful on the iPad 2020 Pro Max. I bought a Bluetooth keyboard specifically for using LF shortcuts. This was still tedious. So far, this is personal gripes. Now a huge issue for me was multi-cam support and lining thing up. I heard LF was adding something for this, DR already has it built in. Align by waveform, and two clips sync up in seconds. And selecting which camera is easy after making a multi-cam timeline. Exporting h.265 is now in the DR free version. Uploading to TH-cam is faster because the rendered files are smaller. I like LF for quick edits that are going to stay on my iPad or iPhone. For everything else, DR is the better option.
@@Drogado68 yes, ae is superior only for motion graphics but not for VFX/compositing, for vfx, node based compositing has been industry standard since the beginning hence all the industry standard comp softwares have been node based, Flame, Shake, Fusion and currently nuke and yes Fusion was used to make movies before Nuke became the current industry standard. AE doesn't come anywhere close to Fusion for compositing.
Recently gave Resolve editing a shot on some decent sized projects. It's so great in so many ways. I don't like all the mousing around. It's fast technically but doesn't particularly "feel" accurate like trimming in Avid is so making fine adjustments ends up overall slower. But, for constructing quick assemblies especially per scene getting them close enough and porting them over into Avid for offlining is actually very easy and considerably faster for once in a lifetime. It has almost everything good going for it. Things I miss. - A solid trim mode. Avid's is just hands down the best. Premiere's dynamic trim is okay, Resolve's is actually terrible (super clunky unless you like precise mousing). The biggest thing is it doesn't release trim mode like you can in Avid by clicking on the TC track. That for me is a huge time saver while refining an edit. - Keyboard functionality without dozens of modifier combinations. Alt, ctrl and shift are all you really should need for cutting. - Snapping via one button hold. Hate that you have to toggle it. - True track based edit manipulation. Resolve is quasi track based even in edit mode. - Roughly managing audio levels is much faster in Avid mixer largely because you can apply per track and in/out and not have to copy paste things. - Extend edit that isn't schizophrenic. - Speed and retime manipulation are so much easier in Avid. Hell it's easier in After Effects. However, Resolve's optical flow and stabilization are much much better. - Forced rendering that doesn't create a mixdown that needs to be swapped back to the OG before adjusting. Sure, Avid creates mini mixdowns for renders just as Premiere does but adjusting them in Resolve after forcing it to render sucks and creates a mess. It's auto render is nice but when I'm focusing on a certain area tweaking timings, it's a chore to wait the several seconds for Resolve to start to background render what I actually want. I could go somewhere else in the timeline and do things while I wait but No. That's silly. My brain is focused on the thing I am doing. Waiting for any of the options to keep up is phoooosh.. trying at times. Wouldn't want a client in the room explaining to them about magic computer ghosts while it's rendering something I don't actually care about instead of what I do want done first. Seems okay for a grading session but not for cutting as fast as the brains in the room are moving. Going back to Resolve for polish and grading is how it's always been but it's really a very very useful tool to help minimize the tedious work before the edit and spend more time actually shaping the feels. For example. Syncing external audio in Resolve is _worlds_ faster and less tedious. Doing a nice one light LUT before busting out proxies makes it so there is no processing at all for offline color in Avid while cutting. Smooth like butter. Long story short: I have started beginning my projects in Resolve, Proxying out the footage, slapping scenes together with all the shots I think I will want -- face find is truly a treat, popping over those timelines and actually cutting in Avid, get approval and off to ProTools for sounds, back to Resolve as it has been for a long time now for final tweaks, grading and polish. I have yet to deliver to broadcast or any streaming service out of Resolve. Other guys do that so I'm not sure if it's better or not. Can't believe I didn't know about how easy round tripping to Avid and back is years ago or I'd have been doing it all this time. I've met tons of editors and no one has ever suggested this. Really great stuff.
Thanks for this. Just getting started it’s a bit overwhelming what tool to invest energies into. I’ve been leaning to FCP but this demo is causing me to second guess.
I'm sticking to grading only. I had to use DaVinci as my sole editor for almost two years and am glad to say I'm finally back in FCPX. I just can't get used to DaVinci. Editing with it feels way too slow for me, and I've had the studio version since Christmas 2019. As soon as covid hit, it became my only option for editing. I was not pleased. You'd think after two years I'd just be used to it now, but I'm not. It took me a week in FCPX to remember everything I liked about it. The timeline is the worst offender for me. I just hate Resolve's timeline. Colour grading is amazing, and that's literally all I use it for now. I grade and export, that's it. Everything else is handled in Final Cut.
FCP user her, looking into switching to Resolve... but indeed.. missing that Keywording of final cut, with option to create multiple IN and OUT selections on a single clip.. Absolutely amazing for documentary work where very long takes containing multiples scene are common..
Heya, Final Cut's keyboarding system is absolutely fantastic. Resolve now has a similar feature. You can mark portions of clips in your media pool and add searchable keywords and other comments. They are called Duration Markers. Much like Final Cut, set an in point and an out point then use a keyboard hotkey to turn those I/O points into a duration marker, then enter your keywords and metadata. Resolve can automatically create search bins for each keyword you create. It's pretty slick, and I imagine it will only get better with subsequent releases of Resolve.
@@FilmEditingPro Thanks, I've been indeed testing out a little about this and I was very excited at first ... yet, in practice it's still miles behind the ease of use (and speed ) of final cut keywording. This has to do with the fact that resolve is also missing the FilmStrip view of final cut, which really making multiple selections in very long clips a breeze... as you can literally zoom in up to the second and get a very granular view of your footage. When trying to precisely place several duration markers on a 25min take in resolve, it became very cumbersome and confusing, specially if the markers are close to each other. As you say.-- let's see if it gets better with further updates. Thanks again for your comment and suggestion.
Great Video, have been using DaVinci Resolve 17 studio now for a couple months now coming form Power Director and Filmora, really love DaVinci and want to learn more. I had tried Pr and Final cut but don't like having to pay a monthly fee to use So DaVinci and their speed editor has been great. Looking forward to Film Editing Pro videos.... Dave...
@@FilmEditingPro Just watched your free film editing intro, will defiantly have to watch all. Just like this video how you moved cuts from the top timeline down... Didn't know you could do that.. Thanks, Dave...
Sir can you post a video about working with different frame rates video in one sequence in premiere pro... Edit I have edited a video of 120 FPS in 24 FPS frame rate...but that looks choppy.. help me sir..🙏
HI! I had a really important question to ask... Is it absolutely necessary to know and work in Avid Media Composer in order to get a job as a film editor in Hollywood? (especially in New York)
I love DaVinci Resolve, but its just to demanding for my computer. I get a ton of crashes and that makes editing frustrating. So for that reason I switched back to Premier Pro. Unfortunately. Hopefully just temporary until I can afford a better Pc.
On what part of your pc was Davinci too demanding? RAM, CPU, GPU or something else? I have problems with Davinci too, while I can edit smoother with Premiere without the image stuttering.
DaVinci works well on my Mac at home, but I've twice had the experience of trying to help friends install it on their Macs, only to find that the keyboard shortcuts wouldn't work because they didn't have the large Mac keyboard with the extra number pads on the right, only the smaller compact one. I would assign commands to certain keys through the keyboard command editor, and DaVinci would simply ignore them, even after quitting the software and rebooting everything. What's up with that, Resolve??
Thankyou for actually explaining tNice tutorialngs. Other videos that I watched started talking about how to make soft and didn't ntion anytNice tutorialng
I often end up destroying my timeline haha. i.e. I work at the end of it and my edits change something way earlier. I know why it happens, I just haven't adjusted to the workflow properly. I am an amateur after all.
I find it strange how most people migrating from premier or fcp just dismiss the power of cut page. It should be obvious that is where their development will be for updates to 17 and when 18 is launched Blackmagic is making two specific pieces of hardware to edit on it. Plus all the new atem ISO models are designed to utilize the multiple camera editing
At 1:55 he states Resolve is not as customizable as Premiere Pro. To me the layout of the GUI is the most impotent aspect of an NLE. With Premiere Pro I can have everything where I want it. That being said I do like Resolve, Media Composer and FCPX. I agree that they all work about the same with different strengths and weaknesses. I just prefer the GUI of Premiere Pro best. It would be great if Adobe lowered the cost of all their programs.
@@FilmEditingPro I disagree. I don't like the fact that Resolve is like using five different programs with different layouts.. The Adobe programs all have a similar GUI and similar way of working. Resolve is like switching between Avid Media Composer and Garage Band. I admit the Lumetri Color Panel is not the greatest but it is just a panel in Premiere Pro as opposed to using a totally different software program just to do color correction. The audio is just anther panel in Premiere Pro as well. With Resolve nine times out of ten you will switch over to Fairlight. Rather than integrate Fairlight into Resolve's Editing GUI it was tacked on as a separate program. I like Resolve but I think the GUI could be a lot better.
Already moved to resolve 17 from premiere, and cant be more satisfied. And got the speed editor for free with r17 studio purchase.

Bar none the best? what does that mean? That tracking is shit or good?
It made me switch”all in one”The price is right and the color correction is the best.Love the UI and the nodes in fusion(it makes so much more sense,to me)
This works. Recommended to try this out. Thanks a lot for your help
I finally just bought into the studio version and it's 100% worth the $300 for the extra features. Especially the native video decoding and encoding.
No brainer, switched in 2019, never looked back.
Got the Studio version with the Speed Editor. 👍
Hey Serg. You find the speed editor makes a huge difference?
@@dave.h4075 I am sure it will once I get more into it, it's really designed for the Cut Page,
and that takes a while to get up to speed.
Your lesson helped a lot, after that i wrote my first lody. Thank you very much.
One word, Just awesome Dude !! Your way of explanation is more sensible and understandable...You could some how figure out our thinking and preferences...Waiting for a full length tutorial for Davinci Free Version. Cheers !!
Thanks so much! We’re going to be releasing a full DaVinci Resolve training course within the next month :)
I n the last 25 years I used pretty much any NLE out there . I switched to Resolve as my only NLE since version 12, and never looked back. For me it's the best editor so far.
wow you made it look so easy and interesting .... love your short tutorial and can't wait for the full course!
Keyword feature is available in Resolve and you can make smart bins out of it.
You simply awesome and great to explain all things about davinci. I'm a fan of davinci.
Your knowledge is amazing, I hope there will be more videos sharing about davinci, for example advanced font keys.
DaVinci is awesome. It runs smooth on low end computers and it’s completely free. Everything you need is in one program which I believe is less resource intensive. Set your timeline resolution to half and you’re good to go. No more monthly subscription fees. Love it.
We love it too!
this video really make me switch from Adobe Premiere Pro to DaVinci Resolve. Hands down
The CUT especialy with the speed editor it's the best thing that could happen to me.
It’s always great to have you with us, James! 👍🎬
Wow 👏 Thank you for uploading!! Thank you for your Efforts!
Glad you enjoyed!
@@FilmEditingPro It's been difficult to edit. But you inspire me^_______^
Yes, it has been a good working program for me since 2016
this video was so much informative! beautifully wrapped up. thank you!
I'm really hoping you do an After Effects vs fusion comparison. That's the only thing that is stopping me from jumping to Resolve and I really want to know how your opinion.
Great idea! It's now on the upcoming topic list.
Good luck!
Once you use nodes you’ll never go back to layered fx workflows
Wow that was a great video I’ve been really considering switching from FCPX & Adobe Premier. I have Davinci just haven’t used it yet. I need to look at more of your videos.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful and detailed videos! On to the soft!
You are so welcome!
This was really informative. Thank You. Might be an easier transition from FCPX I hope.
Alright that's it. After using premiere for 6 years, I'm so done. I've colored in resolve for a while, but now its time to fully make the switch.
omg.. your free tutorial video is easier to understand that any NLE tutorial I've ever watch
Thank you so much - it’s great to have you with us!
A good caveat for sure! Has anyone else here experience the same issue with larger projects getting buggy?
I also noticed the newer the version the more bigger projects become an issue. Maybe I'll try what has been suggested
Yes! Simply awesome package with a great pricing/licensing structure.
This is great 👍 Would like to see more of this straightforward style.
I’m coming from basic LumaFusion editing on the go, but want to do more.
Awesome! Another editing platform to learn then I’ll have 3 of them under my belt.
Fusion is so much more flexible than After Effects once you get used to the node based environment.
Really? I use resolve for everything but graphics. I love the nodes. But i think AE is still superior
@@rano12321 100% agree.
@@Drogado68 after effecs is the definition of garbage, worst program ever created.
@@rano12321 this is not true.. after effects is superior to fusion
Frrrrr tNice tutorials man just straight forward !
Are you able to advise about Pinnacle Studio as compared to other software that you have reviewed please?
To answer your question in the title: Absolutely
This is so great. Thanks for walking through this stuff.
Well done on this video. Resolve is the future king of NLE's.
i love also the Scriptconsole in Davinci.
I use cut page to set all the scenes rough then. Go on edit to make it perfect
So simple and detailed video, it's now going to help to start working wid softsoft!!
your videos are sooo great i love it
Thank you so much!
I was always fascinated by trap soft, been listening to trap long ti and i finally decided that i will try to make my own but i was so
FCP user her, looking into switching to Resolve... but indeed.. missing that Keywording of final cut, with option to create multiple IN and OUT selections on a single clip..
Really great video like always!
I love your tutorials
What did you use for all the animations in this video? Fusion or After Affects?
Worked , thanks a lot!
You *can* automatically resize a clip to fit your aspect ration in Resolve. You just have to enable it in the settings.
True!

HI!
I had a really important question to ask... Is it absolutely necessary to know and work in Avid Media Composer in order to get a job as a film editor in Hollywood? (especially in New York)
There may be some projects that won’t require Avid but you’ll largely be limited if you don’t know it.
@@FilmEditingPro Thanks so much!!
can you make a tutorial on how to synch audio with the footage
Very good, comprehensive

I find it strange how most people migrating from premier or fcp just dismiss the power of cut page.
It should be obvious that is where their development will be for updates to 17 and when 18 is launched
Blackmagic is making two specific pieces of hardware to edit on it.
Resolve default GUI is so good it doesn't need customising from our perspective. Having features split into pages is a huge help too.
