Shame on Nintendo that they didn't release Terranigma for the US market and shame on them that they didn't release Mario RPG in Europe. The 7th Saga is a pretty good game, the problem is that it's got a serious, nearly game breaking bug in its brutally unfair difficulty. When you are higher levels and the story starts getting interesting is when every bad guy seems to be just totally superseding you in power and the computer has stupidly unfair moves like Elixer that it throws out with reckless abandon.
If you haven't played this before and you want to play this game, I highly recommend a rom hack to normalize the difficulty. Play vanilla after you've actually had a chance to enjoy the game.

One thing that always struck me about Enix (in the vein of your comment about Soul Blazer/Actraiser), is you could always kind of tell an Enix game was an Enix game with your eyes closed. They used a "sound palette" that was very distinctive. A lot of those sounds ended up in the other "Quintet" games as well. That bass-heavy explosion-y noise will always make me think of Illusion of Gaia, for example.

So good to hear someone talking about a lot of these, especially someone who can do them justice. I don't think I've ever seen anyone be so kind to Actraiser 2, which had a good thematic idea with The Master grappling with the 7 sins, and they should've done more with that; keeping the Simulation elements would've been perfect for that, I think. EVO was an excellent idea, even if its soundtrack was half lazy and half repackaged Dragon Warrior music; I've beaten it with the human, primate, bird, and even dinosaur, and while I haven't seen different endings, I am curious about how to fill out the final chapter's map. Best I can get most of the time is 24/27, but I've seen a point on the map that leads you almost right to the final boss, like Back Door in Super Mario World; I bought mine from Blockbuster, so I don't know how it was unlocked by whoever had it before me. Paladin's Quest was really cool; everything's weird, even the treasure chests, and it's a shame that we never got the sequel, and that the third and final entry never came to be. I'd never really thought of it like an evolution of the Master System, but you are TOTALLY on point with that; it's like the unholy union of Phantasy Star and... I don't know Aztec Adventure? The overworld battle music is also the most Saturday-morning-cartoon-ass thing I've ever heard in a video game; the rest of it's really good, too. Soul Blazer is another favorite of mine; it got a lot of flak back in the day, because it was billed as an Actraiser sequel, even though it just takes place in the same universe. I loved how most NPCs eschewed the usual "Welcome to Corneria!" banalities in favor of weird little bits of philosophy; everyone had something insightful to say, and even when it was complete nonsense, it was something that was interesting to think about.

Huge disappointment to be at the time. Enix blamed "programming issues" in their Warrior World newsletter, which I think either meant the English text wouldn't fit on the screen or in the size cartridge they planned to use. Finally rectified this and played through it in Japanese this year- wonderful game in terms of story, though takes no advantage of the SNES hardware.

See this is what was great and quirky about Enix. The fantastic and magical stories it created. You had the Evolution story in EVO. The 'wonders of the world' in Illusion of Gaia (Ankgor wat, Great wall of China etc) and story of life and death or beginning with death and barren wastelands, then needing to resurrect the planet continent by continent in Terranigma.

Even though Actraiser 2 is missing that city building gameplay, which is missed in the 2nd game, I still think it is a masterpiece. Great graphics, awesome character mechanics (once you get used to many moves and controls), good level and boss design. I know that this is not my list but I would have put it higher.

I overlooked 7th Saga for many years. There's a lot of great games on this list, but a full playthrough of 7th Saga is just epic. It's not loaded with content like other top tier 16-bit RPGs, but the challenge and time you'll invest to succeed makes it very unique in the SNES library.

Fantastic video man! I've only delved into ActRaiser and Soul Blazer (both wonderful games for sure) so it was nice to see how Enix's other games stack up. Illusion of Gaia is a game that feels so much like an Enix game but since Nintendo of America released it, I can understand why it wasn't on this list. I know that we didn't get it in the US during the SNES era but definitely play Dragon Quest V for the Nintendo DS if you enjoy the Dragon Quest series. I loved DQ5 and it's a real shame that we didn't get the game until 2010-ish.

Sounds like a fun time with some mondo variety in that pack but I swear half of that thing is enix and square!!!
