The NES era of sporting games was kinduv that weird era where you could get the official license of the teams, like in Major League Baseball, but not the license for the player names, or just the opposite in Pro Sports Hockey. I think it was Tecmo Super Bowl was the first to have both team and players licenses and I remember just absolutely loving that.

The Bases Loaded series on the NES is one of the best baseball series on the console. It captures the physics and dynamics of baseball very well and is one of the few games to do this using the unorthodox behind the pitcher view. It's a little challenging to get used to but the game is addicting from then on!

Jaleco had a lot of hidden gems. As a kid I got Astyanax along with my Nintendo (and my Mario/Duck Hunt pack-in) and I think it deserves more attention than it gets. The music is awesome and for me it really feels like one of those sword and sorcery arcade games, like Rastan or Black Tiger. And Shatterhand is totally one of the best action titles on NES, alongside Batman and Ninja Gaiden.

You also didn't mention the classic "You bum!" when a batter strikes out too many times, a rare piece of spoken audio and always hilarious. Plus if you repeatedly beaned a good batter he would charge the mound and get ejected, which became an amusing strategy.

I’ve played last ninja for hours and hours as an little kid on the c64 and everyone loved it. Me too back then but I cannot imagine that it will excite me nowadays. Bases Loaded has a special place in my heart; I had a friend who was really good IRL at baseball, but I enjoyed kicking his butt at Bases Loaded! I'm an only child, so that's one of my few good "multi-player memories"... ;)

There's already plenty of videos of playthroughs so probably not, unless there's a challenge involved.

Memories of Jaelco games. The soccer game used to make me dizzy with the light green and dark green stripes on the field scrolling by as you ran down the field. Bases Loaded was legendary overnight in my school when it was realized if you hit a batter with a pitch he could storm the pitcher. The tennis game lived up to my theory that all tennis games of that format fail because of depth perception.

Bases Loaded (maybe the second one) was really special for me because I'd play it with my oldest brother. He'd only play sports games, so it was really fun for me to get to actually play with him.

The one series that stands out to me from Jaleco is Bases Loaded I and II. I still have my brother's cartridges when he had the NES in the early 90s when I was very young. I'm probably the only person who actually LOVES the music to Bases Loaded II. Hoops is another fine game to the NES. I'd like to try Shatterhand, Robowarrior, Maniac Mansion and Cyberball on my modded NES Mini.

Also, I vividly remember getting Maniac Mansion for Christmas one year - I'd been excitedly waiting for months, and I played it for HOURS that day. (I still have never played it on PC...)

It's better on NES. I played the PC version as an unlockable via the computer in the sequel, day of the tentacle. But I preferred the graphics/music/presentation of the NES version.

Bases Loaded II is my favorite as well, inspite of the irritating music; I actually liked the experimental fielding angle they went with. Objectively though, I have to admit that Bases Loaded 4 has the most refined gameplay features of the NES series.

Hey John, love your videos man!! Have you ever thought of doing a video for your top 10 or even top 20 NES games, with number one being your absolute favorite on the system? That would be so awesome, seeing how much you love retro gaming and the NES.

In Panama the game Shatterhand was played the Japanese version called Tokyou Soulbrain (sorry if I did not write it well), I played the cartridge in Family Computer, but in Panama both the original nes games and those pirated in Family Computer arrived, and this one in in particular they titled it as Robocop 3. We in Panama said in part to that game Jiban, which was a popular series here between 91 to 93. The funny thing about this is that investigating that the Japanese version of ShatterHand is also a TV program there in Japan, like Power Rangers and Robocop, but that they never gave here. Greetings, I like to see this kind of ranking of 8-bit nes games.

Hey John, my wife and I enjoy watching your videos. You're not rude, you don't try to be cute, you're just yourself. You seem like the kind of guy I would've loved to play Nintendo with. I had a friend with a treehouse and he had his Nintendo hooked up in with an extension cord running to the house. I wanted so badly to sleep out there but his mom wouldn't let us. I wonder what you were like as a kid. I'm subscribed and noticed how much your channel has grown! I love your ranking videos and sometimes I'll watch you unbox stuff. Btw, I had Bases Loaded and figured out how to cheat the computer. Once your pitcher is in his wind up press the right button and the hitter would always swing at it for some reason. All you had to do to win was score 1 run lol.

Oh I forgot to mention City Connection! So I saved up money and decided to buy City Connection. I started playing it and almost felt sick to my stomach when I realized I didn't like the game and I wasted like $30 bucks when I could've bought something else.

Does anyone else remember in Bases Loaded when you would either strike out or strike someone out with the bases loaded, there was a little audio clip of someone saying “ you bum”? I think it was only the first one and it wasn’t every time but I absolutely remember it happening.

I played SO much Goal in college. One of the only sports games I ever got into. I can feel the D-pad diagonally digging into my fingers just thinking about it. Jaleco is easily one of the most underrated third party publishers.
