I'm so glad that others can also see the magic in City Connection. That game is just so fun! It's a staple of the 90 bootleg famicom carts we found so easily here in Brazil; if I bought/borrowed one and it didn't have City Connection in it, I'd be bummed!

The NES era of sporting games was kinduv that weird era where you could get the official license of the teams, like in Major League Baseball, but not the license for the player names, or just the opposite in Pro Sports Hockey. I think it was Tecmo Super Bowl was the first to have both team and players licenses and I remember just absolutely loving that.

The Bases Loaded series on the NES is one of the best baseball series on the console. It captures the physics and dynamics of baseball very well and is one of the few games to do this using the unorthodox behind the pitcher view. It's a little challenging to get used to but the game is addicting from then on!

Jaleco had a lot of hidden gems. As a kid I got Astyanax along with my Nintendo (and my Mario/Duck Hunt pack-in) and I think it deserves more attention than it gets. The music is awesome and for me it really feels like one of those sword and sorcery arcade games, like Rastan or Black Tiger. And Shatterhand is totally one of the best action titles on NES, alongside Batman and Ninja Gaiden.

I'm shocked that you gave Bases Loaded a D. I never knew anyone to have issues with timing their swing, and the graphics were great for its day. You also didn't mention the classic "You bum!" when a batter strikes out too many times, a rare piece of spoken audio and always hilarious. Plus if you repeatedly beaned a good batter he would charge the mound and get ejected, which became an amusing strategy.

I’ve played last ninja for hours and hours as an little kid on the c64 and everyone loved it. Me too back then but I cannot imagine that it will excite me nowadays. The isometrics were a novelty back then and ninjas were hot in the 80s but the game is just more or less unplayable and didn’t age well. Nice example of how nostalgia can kick you in the nuts sometimes.

Yeah the isometrics were a big deal then, cuz they were all so unique and looked great. Lots of exploration. Some are still really good and play well enough. Others were a chore to play though, it was often too hard to move around and do things that took away from them being fun.

I loved City Connection back in the day, it's an arcade game but it's quite unique at the same time. The goal is to finish the levels as fast as possible or the cops and cats will trick you to the most impossible spots even more so it was a little painful for me to see you cross "painted" floors on and on and not flip back to go up and down instead... Memories of Jaelco games. The soccer game used to make me dizzy with the light green and dark green stripes on the field scrolling by as you ran down the field. Bases Loaded was legendary overnight in my school when it was realized if you hit a batter with a pitch he could storm the pitcher. The tennis game lived up to my theory that all tennis games of that format fail because of depth perception.

There was a Maniac Mansion tv series in 1990, it lasted three seasons.
I always thought the running of the ball in Goal sounded like a choppy shotgun, it would drive me nuts growing up. Right there with you on City Connection, I still love the game to this day and the catchy music.

Goal! 2 really is a vast improvement over the original. You have to actually like soccer games to appreciate the difference though, which Riggs does not.

2 player rampart is so much fun. Stressful and hectic. Love it.

Watching him scroll past the country options in GOAL and suddenly West Germany appears. I don't know why but that kinda shook me up a little! Like right right, this was pre-Berlin Wall falling.

You are finally doing Jaleco. I pronounce it like Ja-leek-co, pronounced like Coleco. My favorites are Whomp Em and Shatterhand. I don't own Pro Sport Hockey on the NES but I have played it on the NES and I own the SNES port, I missed out on it a few times and I wished I had picked it up. It is the best hockey game I have played from that era.

In Panama the game Shatterhand was played the Japanese version called Tokyou Soulbrain (sorry if I did not write it well), I played the cartridge in Family Computer, but in Panama both the original nes games and those pirated in Family Computer arrived, and this one in in particular they titled it as Robocop 3. We in Panama said in part to that game Jiban, which was a popular series here between 91 to 93. The funny thing about this is that investigating that the Japanese version of ShatterHand is also a TV program there in Japan, like Power Rangers and Robocop, but that they never gave here. Greetings, I like to see this kind of ranking of 8-bit nes games.

Astyanax is totally like Legendary Axe, The way you Junp, Power meter & the totems you destroy to get power-ups. I loved this game as a kid cause I loved both LA games on TG16.

I played SO much Goal in college. One of the only sports games I ever got into. I can feel the D-pad diagonally digging into my fingers just thinking about it. Jaleco is easily one of the most underrated third party publishers.

Also, I vividly remember getting Maniac Mansion for Christmas one year - I'd been excitedly waiting for months, and I played it for HOURS that day. (I still have never played it on PC...)

It's better on NES. I played the PC version as an unlockable via the computer in the sequel, day of the tentacle. But I preferred the graphics/music/presentation of the NES version.

I love the Bases Loaded games. BL2 is my favorite one because the infamous in-game music. I should remix it being that I am a chiptune musician.
Pinball Quest is definitely one of my favorite games. The RPG Mode portion is where it stands out. I can deal with the questionable physics.
I agree with you on Racket Attack. However, for some odd reason, I can definitely tolerate the game.
Robowarrior was developed by Hudson Soft given you mentioned Bomberman talking about it. It's known as Bomber King in Japan.
Shatterhand, known as Solbrain in Japan, was developed by Natsume. It uses the same engine that Shadow of the Ninja ran on, which was previously released and localized by Natsume themselves.
Interesting to note, speaking of City Connection, a few years after Jaleco went belly-up, another company came into existence called City Connection, and all assets from Jaleco were acquired fron them.

Does anyone else remember in Bases Loaded when you would either strike out or strike someone out with the bases loaded, there was a little audio clip of someone saying “ you bum”? I think it was only the first one and it wasn’t every time but I absolutely remember it happening.

Yes, it was in there and it always cracked me up. It usually happened late in a game after multiple strikeouts.

JohnRiggs, I am from Seattle so I like the Mariners, too. Maybe Bases Loaded 4 has the Seattle Pilots instead of the Mariners. Not sure if they ever wore red. The fact that they made 4 Bases Loaded games means someone must like them!

Watching this video and agree wholeheartedly with the rank on Maniac Mansion. Not knocking the other ratings. I just really love that game on the NES. I was curious if you have tried Thimbleweed Park. It's made by the same creators and it's my all time favorite on the Xbox One. My son is a huge fan as well. It plays very similarly to Maniac Mansion. In fact some of those characters make cameos in Thimbleweed Park. It's available on multiple systems, but I've only played it on the Xbox One. Love the channel and watch the videos often.

Bases Loaded has a special place in my heart; I had a friend who was really good IRL at baseball, but I enjoyed kicking his butt at Bases Loaded! I'm an only child, so that's one of my few good "multi-player memories"... ;)
