I too was fifteen years old when I had my son. I couldn't get pregnant after marriage. So, I'm glad now that I kept my baby. Although it was hard for me working in the cafeteria at the local college. I loved your video as most people think that an un-wed mother was useless. Didn't get to college till I was 50 and I loved it and got my degree. Peace

Bravo just goes to show that fertility is not like a faucet to turn off and on. Cooperating with the body can bring unforeseen joy. Destroying life would have cost a lifetime of regret and shame. You listened to your heart.

I'm almost 70 now, and I have lived the same kind of life and now my focus is on gardening by the moon's cycles and always giving a home to horses in their later years. I love this documentary. I wept at the same idea, of "who will love this land as much as I do?" and what will happen to me. Hopefully, when my time comes, I'll just pass peacefully in my garden and not in one of those horrible old folks' homes. Bless your heart for making this!

I am sitting here trying to type while the tears flow. The tears started when Tess said that she had bought a farm. I looked at 30 acres 2 months ago hoping and praying that the money would come in for me to buy it. Today I was notified that the sellers are listing it again as they no longer can wait for me to purchase it. My early childhood years were spent in the bush in a log cabin with Mom, Dad and four siblings. My greatest longing is to have my own farm with chickens, geese and an ox. 74 trips around the sun is NOT too old to enjoy farming!

Several times while watching I had tears roll down my cheek. She is such an inspiration and so loving I couldn't help getting sentimental knowing one day she will be too old to continue to do what she loves in her farm and for her animals. She is the epitome of a high value woman with brilliance, community minded and educator, healer, and a loving spirit. I was happy to know she was able to get to know her daughter, grandchildren, etc and her life has come full circle. She is an inspiration to not just women but also to men. She defies the odds and is a trail blazer. I pray God ensures her heart, through medicine or miracle, she lives at least to 120!!!

I can so relate! Lived in Vegas and had to get out of there! Spent 2n years in Ohio meeting the land, all the work and pleasure. We had dairy goats. We also had a hillbilly neighbor that took me under his wing. He was getting old and nobody listened to him - no time. I ate it up! He taught me to ID trees w/o leaves (bark) and what my hay field needed for nutrition, share cropping. I loved it. Then on to MA and there i met the Lord that brought it a home - emense peace! Dairy goats, a whole herd, calf, our meat, huge organic garden, health food stores, nutrition, chickens, ducks, sheep (never again!) rabbits, muscovy ducks and last but not least geese. I've never looked back. Noe I live in TX, retired, but if bad weather hits, we're ok, we know how. Wood, wood, wood! It heats you 4 ways, cut it down, split it, stack it and burn it. We're never w/o food, I still can. I could go on and on. I adore that life style! Thanx for such a great look at your life.

I'm a 60 year old woman who just bought an off-grid farm in Central Portugal. This video was so inspiring. Some of our stories were similar. Like I've had cancer 4 times. Some people think it's crazy that an old woman like me, not in the best of health, bought a farm in a foreign country. I grew up on a farm and it was always something I wanted to do. I could really connect to her story. Now I have a TH-cam channel sharing my journey as I try and develop an abandoned farm into a working farm again. You're never too old to follow your childhood dreams.

I am a 65 year old southern lady from Texas whose grandparents had a 247 acre dairy farm. I was fortunate enough to live in part of the acreage with my mother and sister in a farming community. I loved this story and admire this lady tremendously. I hope God grants her many more years to enjoy her farm and that she will realize her dream for someone to love and protect it as much as she did and continue her work. I really enjoyed her life story and her resilience to change in her amazing life. We could all learn so much from her. I am interested in the continuation of her story and many other amazing people. What a wonderful farm and lady! I too started my goat farm this year at age 60, after my husband passed away from cancer in Nov. 2020. I had been saving money when and where I could, working a pt job as a PCA. Taking care of my husband when I wasn’t working for almost 2 years. We knew he would not make it more than 5 years, as he had 2 different types of cancer. We did not know it had spread to his brain until the day before he passed. So I came home not knowing what I was going to do, but as I grieved, prayed, spent my time with my dogs, prayed some more, the idea came to get goats, cuz I knew I could handle that on my own. Well, one thing led to another and my son and his wife and my grandson moved back home this spring. They help when and where needed, as I am also on disability from a bad accident in 2016, so some things are hard on me. We turned it into a fun family time at milking time, feeding times, hoof trimming day, bath day, etc. I now have 4 does,(all pg right now), 1 buck and one young whether. I’m so excited for March to come, as I will be having goat births thru out that month. We love the goat milk, have made yogurt, cheese, eggnog and soon will start our soaps and lotions. This video helped me feel very good about my decision, as my other 2 sons and my siblings think I’m nuts for starting a goat farm at an older age. To me it’s fun, enjoyable and helps me find my peace when I’m out in the barn, milk parlor or wherever my goats are. I love it! Thank you for sharing her story!

This is the most inspirational "story" I have seen in a long time. And to be called a bad apple.... omg! What an adventurous spirit. She is a wonderful community builder and she shouldn't worry about what will happen when she gets too old to do it all herself. I know that I would want to be part of her life and work if I lived in the area, even if it would be shearing the sheep and turning it into wool. I know that many people feel the same way - she is creating an incredible gift for everybody who comes in contact with her, she has so much to share that answers the needs of so many people! This is what life and community is all about. Wonderfully made docu, thank you. I'll be watching this again when I feel disheartened by life and its challenges.

A place for their horses and cats to live free, until they are able to resume their lifestyle once again! No one really understands this in the big world! Except for those who’ve survived it! I remember him running and the sheep running after him to a new area to area of containment. Started watching the Grass fed homestead, which was new to Dan an ex cop. His channel would feature Tess and her methods. Dan did a few vids of her and what she learned. This story wrapped in it all up, learning more about Tess. Plants are not the same as animals. That was his pride and joy and what he instinctively understood. I also have had a heart murmur since I was roughly eight. Still managed to be active duty military for a few years that is where I got the neck break. That part of me from the tumors is a mess and nonfunctional. Although this kind lady shared her medical history he is not obliged to do so or make excuses or defend himself for his reasons. For any of his decisions in life. This is phenomenal! I just love her, how she didn't let what happened in the past create a fixed story for her. So many people would have given up (which I can completely understand after being abandoned by her parents). I just...I love how she went on to do so much with that adventurer's spirit...how she's seen and done so many things that her parents probably never dreamed she would or could do.
I also understand her feelings about the land. We're a small farm now, but we plan to expand mightily before the time to retire comes. And I too want to be out there working the land right up til the end. But like her, we've seen how little value there seems to be for farm land these days. When we moved out here the interstate was just 2 lanes on either side, and everything was mostly fields, streams, and forests. Then the grazing cattle disappeared. In just under 4 years the interstate has been expanded to 5 lanes on either side and subdivisions have started popping up everywhere. Now every time we go out some new bit of forest has been completely cleared. It's like a punch to the gut every time I see newly cleared land. So we're moving to an area where they aren't expanding like this, where there's still land enough for pasture, and where we'll be surrounded by people who have family farms and raise livestock like us so that there won't be as much of a chance for zoning to be changed right under us. And we'll plan as best we can to ensure the land remains a farm and remains in the family as long as possible.
Her story has been an inspiration. ❤

I grew up on a 400 acre dairy farm which was idyllic. I’m now 70 yrs old, still quite active & live in a suburban community and love my gardening & landscaping. This lady’s love for the land & her sweet animals Align with my loves as well as teaching neighbors and children how to appreciate those things in nature that are not poisoned. And why it’s so important to be outside and nurture the land around us.

So inspiring! My husband and I bought raw land about 5 years ago. So far, we have a little off-grid cabin, a pole barn, electricity on the property, and water on the property. We plan to move there next year and build our retirement home. The pond is going in right now. There is fencing to be run, gardens to be built, and so much more. Tess, I am so happy you found your daughter.

What an amazing story. I was the first female ag agent in MN. Also had planned on vet school. Funny how life takes twists and turns. Gave me a different view of sheep because I worked an FFA hog farm with a small sheep herd. It seems like sheep are either very alive or dead, so hard to raise. All in the breed and the right environment. I absolutely love George and know how important he is to protecting the flock. You have lived the dream I once had and I respect you immensely.

Isn’t this the typical sin that woman had to suffer while the men go scot free. A man of the cloth gave such destructive advice for her parents to agree and got rid of her and they listen to him and lost their daughter. I know a black person would not have survived thus far.

Usually "buying the farm" means you die but she has totally changed the message of that saying! That's very inspiring! Wow, her story is incredible! All I can say is she followed her heart. Yay, she got to find out about her daughter. It's so great that she wanted to preserve that farmer's legacy too and not get it split it up into a housing division. Sheep to the rescue! Wow, her little truck is perfect for her. I hope you have some intern people too! Great, you're building community. You and Justin Rhodes have similar philosophies. The "first annual" looked really cute! Wow, using the farmhouse as a place for families to stay. That is very creative. I really hope your farm continues on! Wow, Daniel did a really nice film!

Wonderful story. Wonderful woman. I can relate to the husband not having the same DIY interests as his wife. That is me, too. My suggestion is that she collect/maintain a list of three separate people who would be interested in the farm. How does she measure their commitment? They send her reports on how they are preparing to take over the farm quickly. Pre arranging loans or land contracts. Helping her out for a few weeks every year, etc.
My cousin got his dream house by approaching the owners/strangers years before they were even considering selling. Saying "if you ever want to sell the house, please contact me first." As they became friends it became a running joke. But he showed up when they needed help with the odd jobs. And when the time came, they offered him the house on very good terms.

I do miss it. A divorce forced me out and being single and no true income to speak of, It hurts my heart. The life is so gratifying, sure harsh too at times due to nature but she does provide if we are willing to work with her! All I can tell you is…. DO IT! I have grown old fast much faster then anticipated due to not living this nature lifestyle. It keeps you young and sharp and busy and happy and SATISFIED on so many levels I can’t even explain. Go for it and enjoy all of it! My dreams are to still find a place even if it’s to live in a tiny home work for room and board and live to enjoy the cooperations of people and nature!

Thank you for sharing her courageous story. It gives me hope that I can reclaim my parents farm. My father cleared the land with his hands and a Bush axe. He farmed most of the 5 acres and never owned a tractor. He plowed horses, mules and oxen. We, as children and young adults hoed and pulled weeds with our hands. All the vegetables were canned, frozen or stored for winter. We raised chickens and hogs mostly but occasionally had a cow. Again thank you.
