Constant has created a symphonic narrative: far more dramatic than Leinsdorf's suite. It is overwhelmingly telling and successfully built to tell its story without singers. Wonderful performance by Baudo.

I've tried to get through the Opera itself a few times, but this is so much more digestible! - Incredible, other-worldly music! Debussy had to be either in league with Lucifer, or an extraterrestrial! No wonder old-school farts like Faure despised him! - He held the keys to a New World where color became sound, and sound became the spirits of nature! This is Paganism at it's highest expression! Scriabin over-did it, and Szymanowski touched it, but Claude Archille Debussy was The Font, and Holy Grail!

Yes, the orchestral suites really help getting into the mood of the work. Like you, it took me a long time to understand Pelleas, and it's only after listening to some orchestral interludes, that I tried to concentrate more on the orchestral flow than on the vocal lines. Then, it became much easier, and even the words got integrated by themselves into the mood of the music.

I'm pretty agree with the "paganism" statement.

It's weird but the obscure Priory of Zion cult or whatever it is, claims Debussy as its secret leader during his time on earth. They condescend to inform who was the leader only, not who is the current one. I can understand them making the claim, though. As for its truth, it's doubtful . . . but?

@@not2tees The Priory of Zion was a hoax, no such organization existed before a con man named Pierre Plantard made up a fake history of it in 1956, long after Debussy was dead.

At 4 minutes, this is stealing from Wagner's Parsifal transformation music. But no problem for me. A few months ago, there was an upload here on TH-cam of the new production of Pelleas from the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Sensational and deeply moving. It's been taken down. For me the most shattering musical Pelleas composition is the Schoenberg symphonic tone poem. If you don't know it, by all means do yourself a favor and listen and be emotionally overwhelmed. And then marvel at the musical genius behind it.

Yes, indeed, its a reference to Wagner's Parsifal. Debussy always was very critical to Wagner's music, but nevertheless, his "quote" is surely a tribute to the Bayreuth master.
